U11 Girls: Nashua Blast 8, Manchester PAL 7

The Nashua Blast U11 girls capped off their regular season with an 8-7 win over Manchester PAL at Livingston Park.

The Blast girls came out strong in the first half leading 6-2. The offense was powered by Kelsie Leith, Julia Sullivan, Britney Pearson, Izzy Bolduc, Alison Hartshorn and Bailey Morin. Scoring was contagious for the Blast with goals by Kirsten Rourke, who had two goals and an assist, a goal from Zoe Fillebrown assisted by Julia Gagnon, a goal for Gagnon herself on an assist by Emma Pucillo, and two goals by Pucillo with one assisted by a great down field pass from Hannah Fortin. Campbell Haller did a great job in net during the first half to keep Manchester at bay.

Defensively, Izzy Bolduc, Kaylie Keegan, Alyssa DeCarteret, Fortin, Payson Mooso, Calley Goulet and Kirsten McIntire stood out to protect Nashua’s lead the whole game.

In the second half Manchester made it interesting coming within one goal to tie it late in the game, but rookies Britney Pearson and Julia Sullivan each scored their first goals of the season to keep Nashua ahead. Abby Rowe pulled some amazing saves late in the game and the Blast were able to hang on for the victory.

U13 Boys: Salem C 7, Nashua Blast C 5

The Nashua Blast U13C boys suffered their first loss of the season, 7-5, to a strong Salem team. Midfielders Connor Robbins, Simon Morrier and Joe Thurston led an aggressive offense, allowing Matt Lambalot and Alex Moody to each score a goal in the first half. Trailing 7-2, the Blast tried to rally in the fourth quarter, just coming up short. Defensemen Nikki Cheung, Tyler Joles, Ian Read, Jacob Holmes and Lucas Daigle, and goalie James Petz (six saves) denied numerous Salem offensive possessions holding them to one fourth quarter goal. On the offensive end, Matt Bodi, Robbins and Moody all tallied late goals in the comeback attempt.

U13 Boys: Nashua Blast 10, Cocheco 6

The Nashua Blast U13C boys faced off against Cocheco in their season finale and came away with a 10-6 victory in an aggressively played game. Midfielder Connor Prangley was a one-man wrecking crew for the Blast, netting seven goals.

The Blast moved the ball well all day, keeping heavy pressure on the Cocheco defense, while attackmen Will Haller, Zach Link, Colin Calnan and midfielder Andrew Lacroix consistently out hustled their opponents to numerous loose balls. Cyrus Forcier scored twice and Matt Bodi scored once.

Both Blast goalies made some outstanding stops with James Petz making five saves in the first half and Nick Page stopping three shots in the second. The Blast finish the regular season with a 6-1 record, good for second place in their division.

SOFTBALL

Northeast U10 Hurricanes win Charpentier tourney

It took eight innings to finish things off, but the Northeast U10 Hurricanes beat the Southern Maine U10 Flames to capture the Bob Charpentier Memorial Tournament title last weekend in Lowell, Ma.

Members of the tournament championship team are Olivia Kapsambelis, Victoria Andrade, Izzy Antonelli, Alexa Pacy, Madison Rastello, Emma Tomlins, Brianna Marino, Abby Latham, Morgan Hartranft, Skylar Mack, Nyah Mazzone, Brenna Davenport and Dana Littlefield.

U9 Boys: NWC faces Salem, Atkinson, Windham

The Nashua World Cup U9 boys team had three solid games against teams from Salem, Windham and Atkinson.

Against Salem, NWC goalie Jordan Robichaud gave his teammates confidence with his strong play. The NWC offense capitalized three times, with two goals from Patrick Hyde and another from Colin McMahon. Brogan Gibbon and Cameron Mills assisted on the goals.

The Salem attack was held in check by great defensive performances from Thomas Ackerley and Lucca Soares.

Against the Timberwolves in Atkinson, NWC’s Lucca Soares played fantastic in goal in the first half, and then scored twice late in the second half. Jordan Robichaud was a force at midfield, scoring a goal and adding two assists in the match. A strong defensive effort from Thomas Ackerley and goaltending from Michael Poublon were key to keeping the match even despite the potent attack of the Timberwolves. Also contributing were Patrick Hyde with two goals and Trevor Stewart with an assist in the game.

In the Windham match at Main Dunstable field, a resiliant NWC group rebounded from allowing several goals early on to battle back and make it a quality match the rest of the game. Jacob Magni and Colin McMahon scored one goal each, while NWC received good overall performances from Brogan Gibbon and Cameron Mills in the midfield.

STREET HOCKEY

Elm St./Nashua Catholic squad wins season finale

The threat of rain forced the final week of Nashua Police Athletic League street hockey from the outside rink to inside the gym at the Boys and Girls Club, but that didn’t reduce the intensity of play as Sgt. Joe Molinari’s combined Elm Street Middle School and Nashua Catholic Junior High team topped Officer Anthony Murray’s Fairgrounds Middle School squad 11-7.

ES/NC peppered Fairgrounds goalie Zack Torla in the first period, netting five goals – four from Ryan Montbleau and one from Ethan Michaud – but the Falcons’ Brandon Rand single-handedly kept Fairgrounds in the contest with five first period goals of his own.

In the second period, Dawson Fortier replaced Sean Feenan as the Fairgrounds goalie, but ES/NC scored five more goals – three by Feenan, one from Michaud and another by Montbleau.

ES/NC goaltender Austin Pennypacker made four saves in the middle period, allowing two more Rand goals. Rand moved into the netminding position in the third period, coming up with 10 saves. Feenan scored one final goal to seal the season finale.

PAL Officer Karen Becotte commended BGCGN Athletic Director Mohammed Kargbo for his officiating over the six-game season, noting, “as hard as these middle schoolers go at it, Mohammed always somehow keeps it under control. We’re all looking forward to next year’s season already.”

Pennichuck finishes regular season at 9-1

The Pennichuck Middle School baseball team finished off an impressive season, with a 9-1 record, tying Hudson for first place in the regular season.

With a well balanced offensive attack, strong pitching and defense, the team had some exciting games throughout the season.

The Pennichuck boys finished the last five games of the season giving up only two earned runs led by Tim Paige, Mike Kernen, Sam McCarthy and Shayne Seidle on the mound and Brennan Kastens as their battery mate.

With strong performances up and down the lineup and defensively from Jake Butler, Tyler Watkins, Colby Gunther, Will Barry and Brandon Gillis.

The team has a strong returning core with players like Patrick Soucy, Sam Maden, Zach Beckett, Michael Jensen, Mike Lentz.

Cal Ripken

Angels finish first in Nashua North division

The Angels capped off a first place finish in the Nashua North Cal Ripken League with a 13-2 regular season record.

The final game came down to the Red Sox and Angels battling for first place in an exceptional game played by both teams.

Key plays were made by Ruben Rodriguez, with a quick defensive play on a runner stealing home, and Jarrod Levesque at shortstop for the Angels. As well as Thomas Ethier, Cole Nickerson, Grant Coy and Thomas Pappas for the Red Sox.

Sam Maden led the charge for the Angels on the mound, going the distance, and adding two big hits.

Offensively, Andre Laplante set the table all day for the Angels and dove into home as well as scored the tying run off of a Ruben Rodriguez hit, which was followed by a walk-off hit by Kenny Jerez to give the Angels the regular season championship and qualify them for the city tournament.

Minors

Rays 18, Mariners 14

Cal Levesque started things off on the mound for the Rays and was steadfast for two innings. A double by Jose Berrios brought in a run, and the Levesque helped himself out with a single. With the score tied after two innings, Aaron Roberge came in to pitch and held the Mariners to four runs, striking out the sides.

The game ended on an exciting play fielded by Colin Keavey at second, throwing over to first for the final out. Thanks to the Mariners for an exciting game and their terrific sportsmanship.

Giants 15, Brewers 14

For the Giants, Zack Berthiaume started at the mound throwing a great game. Zack faced nine batters and struck out five and only allowed one hit. The Giants had great hits and excellent performances from Josh Taylor and Spencer Labreque. The Giants called on Spencer Labreque and Evan Wilson to close the game. The Brewers played a great game and showed a lot of spirit.

Phillies 13, Brewers 3

In a game that was much closer than the final score indicates, the Phillies came out on top on the strength of defense and pitching. Spencer Desroisers, Adam Gosselin and Zak Almeida combined for 16 strikeouts, allowing only three runs while walking just four.

Zach Plourde made a nice stop at shortstop and flipped to Robbie Long covering second to record the final out. Cody Cargill led the hitting going 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs. Robbie Long also had three hits, which included two doubles while Alex Ortiz and Adam Gosselin each had hits for the Phillies. David Koehler ran well out on the bases to score twice.

Phillies 17, Mariners 7

Spencer Desroisers pitched three strong innings, striking out seven and allowing only one run for the Phillies. The defense played well recording several putouts on the night and was always alert backing up plays. Evan Soucy and Alex Ortiz each made nice plays on ground balls hit their way to record an out. The offense featured active bats and aggressive baserunning led by Robbie Long who was 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI.

The night featured three other Phillies who had three hits in their four at bats – Alex Ortiz (three RBIs), Zak Almeida (two RBIs) and Spencer Desroisers, who drove in five runs. Rounding out the batting were leadoff hitter Adam Gosselin, who was on base three times, scoring three runs and David Koehler, who pounded a triple to right field.

For the Mariners, Jacob Demers pitched the first two innings, striking out five, walking two, and helped his own cause with a nice defensive assist. Brandon Metivier came in pitched the next 12?3 innings and threw strike after strike whiffing four of his own. Colby Spencer came in to close out the game with more of the same. At the plate, Jaiden Dupont, Abhinav Sharma and Nick Tsetsakis each got hits while Zachary Demers and Bryan Jimenez also put the ball in play.

Majors

Twins 6, Red Sox 1

For the Twins, Calvin Sawtelle pitched a complete-game win, recording 11 strike outs while allowing three hits and no earned runs.

Sawtelle was backed by solid defense, highlighted by a line drive caught by Courtney Olsen, who tossed the ball to Peter Dyszcyk at second for a double play, and an outstanding catch in center by Kyle Dexter. At the plate, Dyszcyk went 4 for 4, Adam Fenlason went 2 for 4, Kyle Dexter went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Brian Stiles had triple that helped the Twins get on the board early.

O’s 4, A’s 1

Kellen Sheehan pitched well, holding a good hitting Orioles team to just four runs, but Brett Leblanc did better limiting the A’s to one run. Trey Legraw and Shane Lopez led the A’s offensively, reaching base twice each and Noah Morse chipped in with a hustle single.

Royals 8, Cardinals 7

The tough Cardinals team tested the Royals by getting out to a 7-3 lead, but the Royals battled back and squeaked out a one-run win.

It was capped by scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs in that fifth frame, Evan Baldassaro and Joe Routhier singled and eventually scored. A big key to this victory was the pitching of Luke Sanford, who pitched 31?3 scoreless innings to secure the win.

Royals 7, Athletics 4

After getting behind early, the Royals tied the game in the third then scored a go-ahead run in the fourth and never looked back. Joe Routhier pitched four solid innings to secure the win, while Routhier, Zack Kelley and Ryan Sanchez led the way offensively with multiple hits. Also adding key hits were River Dion and Hunter Routhier.

Cardinals 12, Red Sox 9

The Cardinals’ offense was led by Damon Glastetter (3 for 4, walk), who had an inside-the-park home run, Spencer Dozois (two-run triple) and JJ Ducharme (three RBIs). Cardinals pitcher Aiden van Batenburg recorded six strike outs for the win.
