Fairgrounds 10, Elm St. 8

In Nashua Police Athletic League street hockey action, Officer Anthony Murray’s Fairgrounds Middle School team resumed its winning ways with a 10-8 victory over Sgt. Joe Molinari’s Elm St. team at the outdoor street hockey rink at the Boys and Girls Club.

Nick Molinari opened the scoring with the first of his two goals, putting Fairgrounds momentarily ahead. Austin Pennypacker lit the lamp for three times for an Elm St. hat trick, putting the Eagles ahead 3-2. Christian Reynoso scored to put Fairgrounds ahead 4-3 at the end of the first period. Brandon Rand played in the pipes for Elm Street, stopping 16 of the 18 shots he faced.

Fairgrounds’ Dawson Fortier stopped 6 of 8, allowing the Falcons to cling to a 6-5 lead after two periods. The offenses again exploded in the third period despite Fortier’s 16 saves and Pennypacker’s 13 stops for Elm St.

Goal scorers for Elm Street were Brandon Rand, Zach Torla (2), Ed Lacombe and Pennypacker. Providing offense for Fairgrounds were Molinari (2), Bryan Connolly (hat trick), Bailey Moran, Mark Othot (2) and the unselfish Reynoso (2 goals, 5 assists).

Majors

Red Sox 5, Athletics 9

Zach Meredith earned game ball honors for the A’s for his offensive performance, which included a hard hit double over the left fielder’s head, and his defensive play at third base – particularly the game-ending double play in which he caught a fly ball and doubled up a runner at first base. Adam Labarge was dominant on the mound, silencing the Red Sox bats for 51?3 innings, and his battery mate for most of the game, Kellen Sheehan, turned in a great game behind the plate with multiple catches on third strike foul tips.

Twins 10, Red Sox 8

The pitchers for the Twins, Courtney Olsen, Peter Dyszcyk and Adam Fenlason, combined for 14 strike outs, seven hits, six earned runs and only three walks.

Offensively for the Twins, Peter Dyszcyk was 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Adam Fenlason went 2 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored.

For the Red Sox, Ty Olsen hit his first Little League home run to lead the teams best offensive game of the year, followed by Andrew Ashworth’s three hits and Joey Allen’s two hits.

Royals 9, As 8

A six-run, fifth-inning rally was started by a Noah Gonzalez inside-the-park home run with key hits by River Dion, Travis Martin and Ryan Sanchez. In the sixth, Joe Routhier led off with a triple and Zack Kelley knocked in the winning run. Noah Morse earned game ball honors for the A’s for his solid defensive play at shortstop and for his 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Zach Meredith turned in a great game for the A’s with stellar defense in center field and he reached base in all four of his at-bats.

Twins 7, Royals 6

The Twins trailed 5-1 in the third inning and came back to win 7-6. Peter Dyszcyk pitched four innings of relief only giving up three hits, seven strike outs and zero earned runs. Twins got some timely hitting by Kyle Dexter who had a two RBIs double in the fourth inning to get the Twins come back started. Matt Esquivel had an RBI single in the sixth that ended up being the game-winner.

Twins 10, Orioles 8

Twins got out to an early lead 10-4 in the third inning on a bases loaded in-the-park home run by Adam Fenlason. Brian Stiles got things started for the Twins with a double in the first inning. Peter Dyszcyk went 3 for 4 (single, double, triple) with three RBIs. Kyle Dexter pitched two innings in relief and was able to hold off the Orioles who fought hard to get back in the game.

Cardinals 12, Red Sox 4

Damon Glastetter went 3 for 4 and made some great plays in the field, while JJ Ducharme went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Cardinals. Gabriel Perrault pitched a great game, allowing three runs. He also made an outstanding play in the field that saved two runs from scoring. Robert Finn came in to close out the game.

Twins 7, A’s 3

For the Twins, Peter Dyszcyk pitched five innings striking out 13 and giving up one hit. At the plate Calvin Sawtelle was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Minors

Mets 12, Giants 8

The Mets came out on fire in the top of the first with Eren LaBonte striking out the first three batters he faced. The Mets also came out swinging the bat in the bottom of the first with Kevin Collins, Isaiah Johnson, Anthony Forgione and Sean Nestor all getting base hits. Anthony Forgione had two RBIs, while Isaiah Johnson, Ryan Lopez and Graison Connors added one RBI each. The Mets pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts. Forgione executed his own double play by catching a line drive at third and then tagging a runner coming from second.

Phillies 14, Rays 4

Robbie Long was spectacular on the mound, striking out six over 21?3 innings, while issuing zero walks. Adam Gosselin also pitched well in relief striking out three in his 11?3 innings of work. Cody Cargill led the offense, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Zak Almeida, Jason Messier and Evan Soucy each had base hits.

White Sox 10, Mariners 1

Starting pitcher Owen Duda kept his team in the game while striking out five. Brandon Metivier pitched in relief striking out another four batters. Colby Spencer came in and had three strikeouts. Offensively, the Mariners were once again swinging the bats. Making solid contact in two at-bats apiece were Caleb Plourde and Jacob Demers.

Mets 7, Padres 4

For the Padres, Jake Lord went 41?3 innings and striking out seven while Peyton Adams came on in relief for the final 12?3 and struck out three. The Padres stayed aggressive at the plate and were able to record hits against solid Mets pitching. Jack O’Malley and Alex Durand each had a hit.

Rays 12, Giants 5

Rays pitching dominated with Chris Markunas striking out five and holding the Giants to one run in each of the first two innings. Chris Perez came in for relief to preserve the win for the Rays. Markunas then helped himself out by snagging a hard hit line drive to the mound and doubling up the Giants on second to end the game. For the Gaints, Zack Berthiaume used all of his pitches holding the Rays to four runs, and Josh Taylor came in for relief.

Mariners 8, Brewers 9

For the Mariners, Jacob Demers pitched four strong innings striking out 12 batters while walking only one. Owen Duda went 3 for 3 (walk, run scored). Also getting hits were Jacob Demers, Caleb Plourde, Brandon Metivier and Abhinav Sharma.

The Brewers earned their first win of the year behind a strong pitching performace from Tyle Jagentenfl and Bryce Eckenrode. Great job behind the plate by Ben Silar and Julian Rodriguez. Game ball went to Stephen Vertigans. Stephen went 3 for 3 with two singles, a double and two RBIs.

Giants 8, Phillies 5

Offensively, the Giants received big games from several players, including CJ Mellen (2 for 3), Jacob Wilcox (2 for 4), Nick Quadros (2 for 4), Andrew Penkala (2 for 4), Owen Mooso (2 for 4) and Owen Shea (1 for 3).

On the mound the Giants received solid games from Mellen (five Ks), Mike Levasseur (six Ks) and Shea (two Ks). The Phillies received hits from Max Coffin, Jack Leatherman and Tyler Arneson.

Orioles 14, Phillies 3

The Phillies started the scoring following a walk to Tyler Gouveia and a double by Nic Stockman. The Orioles’ defense settled in with a spectacular grab at third base by Chase Hart. The Orioles’ offense answered with a two-run home run by Chad Hult and hits from Jake Fitzpatrick, Zach Finkelstein, Cam Paquette and Nick Perkins. The Orioles scored a few more with back to back home runs from Keenan Dwyer and Hult.

Royals 10, A’s 5

The Royals managed to score runs in every inning but the fourth with some timely hits, including two each by Alex Amigo, Steve Signorello and Owen Amigo (including his sixth home run of the season).

Phillies 10, Rockies 9

Max Coffin (2 for 3) and Ben Lugo (2 for 2) led the Phillies’ offense to defeat the Rockies in an exciting game. Ryan Vermette got his first major league hit, and also saw action on the mound.

AAA

Giants 4, Cardinals 3

Kavim Bhatnagar pitched five innings and struck out 11 batters. Nathan Cormier also pitched well and struck out two batters. Joe Handy was the offensive star for the Cardinals going 2 for 3 with two runs scored. The offensive star for the Giants was Nolan Foss (2 for 3).

Rockies 8, A’s 7

This was an exciting game, with the lead alternating between both teams. Andres Hulfachor took the mound for the Rockies in the first two innings and held the A’s to two runs on hits from Roe Hendrick, Nathan Riggs and Brennan Bergerson. Hendrick toed the rubber in the first inning for the A’s and gave up three runs on a hit from Matt Frye.

LACROSSE

U13 girls: Nashua Blast 12, Cocheco 5

Delia Blondeau and Lindsay Holmes controled the offensive tempo from midfield for Nashua. Strong defense was played by Arrianna Mohler. Attack continued to be high scoring with Olivia Koutsas, Jenna Tingley and Danielle Upton leading the charge.

Nashua (5-1) also beat Amherst 8-5 in a scrimmage. Mikayla Flesch made 18 saves in net for the Blast.

U11 girls: Nashua Blast 9, Cocheco 4

The Nashua Blast celebrated their first official win of the season on Sunday with a road victory over Cocheco.

Nashua’s Bailey Morin and Kirsten Rourke were lights out in net splitting the halves. The defensive efforts of Izzy Bolduc, Abby Rowe, Julia Sullivan, Emma Pucillo, Kelsie Leith, Julia Gagnon and Zoe Fillebrown kept the ball in the hands of the offense most of the game. Julia Gagnon and Payson Mooso handled the face-offs.

Scoring in the first half were Rouke and then Gagnon on a pass from Rourke. The second half offense was powered by superior efforts from Rowe and Mooso – who each scored their first goals of the season – Campbell Haller, Alyssa DeCarteret, Kaylie Keegan – who also scored – and Calley Goulet and Kirsten McIntire – who each scored twice on great passes from Bolduc, Fillebrown and Gagnon.

NSG solid at Prep-Op meet in Dover

Nashua School of Gymnastics Prep-Optional gymnasts competed at the NH Prep-Opt State Meet on May 15 at Tri-Star Gymnastics in Dover. The Novice and Intermediate Teams placed second and the Advance Team placed third.

BGCGN tryouts set for June 6-7

Tryouts for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua Swim Team will be held on June 6 and 7 from 6-7 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua, 47 Grand Avenue, Nashua. The Club phone number is 883-0523. All swimmers ages 6-19 are invited to attend. Swimmers must be able to swim freestyle and backstroke in the following distances in order to participate (6-8 year olds 25 yards, 9-12 year olds 50 yards, 13 and up 100 yards). New Brookline U10 girls team

The Brookline Breakers – a new U10 girls travel team based in Brookline, but open to surrounding towns – is holding tryouts on Sunday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Brookline Town Field (3 Frances Dr., Brookline). Girls born between Aug. 1, 2001 and July 31, 2003 are eligible to tryout. This new team will play in the Fall 2011 season of the Granite State Youth Soccer League’s U10 girls Division 2.
