Stars win Boys Biddy title

The Stars defeated the Globetrotters 49-37 on March 19 at Chestnut Street Gym to capture the Boys Biddy championship, finishing the season at 19-1.

The Stars defense of Zach Gath, Brandon Bickom and Tommy Doucette clogged the middle with tenacious defense, making the Trotters’ Sam McCarthy (22 points) work for every shot.

Chad Olivieri led the Stars with 26 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, while Jack Fahey played outstanding defense and scored 11 points. Brendan Murphy contributed eight points and several steals. Jake Fong and Bickom contributed key baskets, while Jaymin Patel, Hunter Law and Ben Gorelick held the Trotters offense in check.

Derek Downing’s hustle slowed the opposing guards and James Hogan-Hines fought for every rebound. Nnaji Obinello’s presence was missed in the finals, but Brandon Lee stepped it up on defense to help the his team win.

The Trotters tied it up in the third after a few McCarthy buckets, but Olivieri countered with a few jumpers in the paint to reclaim the lead. Fast-break passes to Jack Fahey extended the lead and late foul shots by the Stars sealed the win.

Stars 50, Warriors 40

The Stars survived the balanced attack of the Warriors to advance to the finals. Jack Barnes was a force on the boards, while also netting 10. Spencer Bergeron drilled five consecutive long-range jumpers in the second half to ignite the crowd and close the gap. The Stars defense was led by Jack Fahey, while offensively it was Chad Olivieri scoring 31, with seven critical points added by Tommy Doucette.

Stars 45, Knicks 35

The Stars overcame a balanced Knicks attack, led by Richie Mercado (12 points) and Patrick Carr (six points). The Stars were led by Chad Olivieri’s 25 points and Brendan Murphy’s 12.

Fairgrounds wins Middle School League opener

In Nashua Police Athletic League street hockey action, Fairgrounds Middle School repeated its opening day win from last season with a 10-9 victory over a combined Elm St. Middle School/Nashua Catholic Jr. High squad.

The middle school teams, coached by Nashua Police Captain Fred Nichols, Sgt. Mike Ledoux and Sgt. Joe Molinari battled it out on the outdoor hockey rink at the Nashua Boys and Girls Club (BGCGN) with PAL Officer Karen Becotte officiating.

Austin Pennypacker picked up a hat trick for Elm St., with teammates Ed Lacombe, John Izzarilli and Nashua Catholic’s Sean Feenan, Ethan Michaud and Ryan Montbleau all adding goals. Feenan handled goalkeeping duties for the Elm St./NC squad, facing 40 shots on goal from the Fairgrounds sharpshooters, including goal scorers Brian Conley (five goals), Zack Torla, Dawson Fortier and Brandon Rand. Torla tended the Fairgrounds net.

BGCGN Athletic Director Mohammed Kargbo pointed out that “even players with little or no hockey or street hockey experience were able to contribute, both in goal scoring and defense. The Boys and Girls Club is happy to be co-sponsoring this program again with the Police Athletic League.”

Offered on Friday afternoons in April and May by the Nashua Police Athletic League and BGCGN, in collaboration with the 21st Century Foundation, teams have formed and continue to form at each of Nashua’s middle schools.

Crusaders football/cheer registration still open

The 2011 Nashua Elks Crusaders Football and Spirit Registration is still open. Registration for new and returning participants is set for Tuesday, April 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the Elm Street Middle School, Chestnut Street Gym (117 Elm St.).
