Sisters Leah Kovitch and Lynn Kovitch of Nashua recently competed in the 2011 United States Snowshoe Association’s National Championship held in Cable, Wis.

Leah, a junior at Nashua High School North, and Lynn, an eighth grader at Elm Street Middle School, traveled to Wisconsin to participate in the championship 5K junior race division.

Both girls competed in the New Hampshire Granite State Snowshoe Series this winter and qualified for the national program in January.

They were the only junior athletes from New Hampshire to qualify.

The sisters were featured on WMUR. The family traveled to Wisconsin on March 12 to compete against other junior snowshoe athletes from across the country. Competitive snowshoe racing has caught the attention of endurance athletes in New Hampshire, and the Granite State had five athletes competing in the mens and womens 10K finals.

Amber Ferreria of Concord, the 2010 women’s champion, placed second and won the silver medal.

Both girls faced fierce competition from Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Leah placed sixth overall in her age division with a time of 40.28. Lynn placed second in the female 10-14 age category claiming the silver medal with a time of 45.40 over the challenging 5K course.
