BASKETBALL

Nashua Biddy

Spurs win second girls title

The Spurs repeated as champions of the Girls Biddy league with a 29-27 win over the Celtics on Thursday night at Fairgrounds Middle School. After suffering three regular season losses, the Spurs advanced through the playoffs with a 29-17 quarterfinals win over the Rockets and a 32-20 semifinals victory over the Bulls. The championship game was tight all the way, with the Spurs jumping out to an early 13-2 first-quarter lead, and the Celts steadily closing the gap throughout the contest. Point guard Marie Laplante poured in 14 points, with offensive punch added by Kennedy Rebello and Jillian Rabasco to the tune of six points each. Brianna Rittenburg also came up with a crucial last-second bucket to end the first half. The Spurs roster also included starters Nina Guidaboni, Chanaya Allard, Shanowa Brown, Mounika Talluri, Haarika Talluri, Jessica Mooney, Julia Perry, Debbie Decareau and Diante Ledoux.

Mustangs win boys Jr. Biddy title

The Mustangs and Patriots faced each other for the city championship, with the Mustangs coming out on top 35-29. The game was full of excitement from the opening tip and remained close the entire game. The Mustangs once again received tremendous games from Andrew Penkala (11 points) and Casey McNally (8 points), who controlled the tempo of the game and played tenacious defense. Also contributing to the offense were Dallas Kastens (4 points) and Rory Curran; however, the Mustangs second unit, led by Cody Gagnon (11 points), played their best game of the season. Defensively, Nick Brown, Suhass Katikanend, Tyler Brown, Logan Boucher, Jack Woermer and Joe Calomo played hard all game and caused several turnovers. On the glass, Matt Thibault played well and grabbed several key rebounds at the end of the game to secure the victory. The Patriots played extremely hard and received offensive contributions from Chase Hart (8 points), Nevan Roy (6 points) and Jeremiah Lones (6 points). On the second unit, the Patriots received big nights and solid efforts from River Hart and Robbie Pavlas.

TRAVEL

Nighthawks are champions

The fourth-grade Nighthawks defeated Dracut, Mass. to win the Merrimack Valley Youth Basketball Championship. The young Nighthawks defeated Wakefield, Mass. and Windham to earn a spot in the championship game. The score remained close throughout the entire contest, with Nashua holding only a 2-point lead at halftime. However, in the second half, the Nighthawks pulled ahead and were able to hold off Dracut to capture the title, 46-38. Gabriel Perrault, Spencer Desrosiers (3 assists and 1 steal) and Brenden Choate (3 steals and 1 assist) shared the point-guard position and effectively directed the Nashua offense. Each recorded multiple assists and steals during the game. Overall, the Nighthawks received big offensive performances from Nevan Roy (18 points and 12 rebounds), Andrew Penkala (11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists ) and Patrick Gillis (6 points and 8 rebounds). Also contributing to the offense were Jake Robbins (5 points and 4 rebounds), Perrault (4 points and 6 assists) and Jeffrey Reza (2 points). Defensively, the Nighthawks received strong games from Chase Hart (2 rebounds and 2 steals), Casey McNally (3 rebounds and 1 steal) and Penkala. Andrew Moody also played a solid game and grabbed multiple rebounds on both ends of the court. The team was coached by Marcel Carrier, Lee Choate and Nick Penkala. The championship was the first Merrimack Valley title for the Nashua Nighthawk program.

NSG competes in Acton, Mass.

Nashua School of Gymnastics Prep-Optional Teams competed at Planet Gymnastics in Acton Mass on March 11. Many of the gymnasts placed in the top three all around and in individual events. The scores for the Nashua-area gymnasts are as follows:

NEGTC gymnasts in qualifier

New England Gymnastics Training Center of Hudson hosted Levels 4-9 and all Prep-op at a qualifying meet at their home gym last Sunday. The gymnasts needed to achieve an All Around score of 31.000 or higher to compete in the upcoming State Sectional.

Level 4 (6-8 Age Division)

NEGTC boys compete in Mass.

New England Gymnastics Training Center of Hudson Boys Competitive Team competed in the Gymnastics and More 2011 in Woburn, Mass. Team awards were as follows: Level 4 and 6 both took home a Third-Place Team Banner. Level 5 took home Fourth-Place Team Banner and finishing up was Levels 7 and 8 with the Sixth-Place Team Banner.

Level 4 (6-7 age division)

Ben Steele, Londonderry, placed 2nd with an All Around score of 85.900. He received a 15.4 on Floor (3rd), 12.6 on Pommel (4th), 15.2 Rings (1st T), 14.1 on Vault (6th T), 14.7 on P-Bars (3rd T), 14.8 on H-Bars (4th T).

REGISTRATIONS

Cal Ripken Baseball—Nashua North

The snow is melting and it is time to play ball. For all boys and girls who live in Nashua in zip code 03064 and are between the ages of 5 and 12 years old as of April 30, 2011, sign ups are underway for all levels of baseball. For most children, the season begins approximately May 1. The registration form is available at Jeannotte’s Market or can be downloaded at our website: www.nnbaseball.org. On March 26, there will be a skills assessment for all 9-12-year-olds at the Amherst Street School gym beginning at 8 a.m. for 9-year-olds, 9:30 for 10-year-olds and 10:30 for 11-and 12-year-olds. Younger players’ parents can drop off their registration forms at this location from 8-11 a.m. New players need a copy of their birth certificate.

Nashua Elks Crusaders Football and Spirit

Registration for participants in the Nashua Elks Crusaders youth football and cheerleading programs are set for Wednesday, March 30, for returning participants, from 6-8 p.m. at the Lafayette Club, 34 High Street, Nashua, and Saturday April 2, for new participants, from 9-11 a.m. at Elm Street middle school, Chestnut Street Gym, 117 Elm Street in Nashua. HBHS Softball Camp

Come play Summer Softball with HBHS Varsity Softball Team and Coaches the week of July 11-15. HBHS Softball Camp is offered for players 9-15 years old from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., rain or shine.
