GYMNASTICS

NSG strong at Friendship Meet in Bow

Nashua School of Gymnastics Level 4-6 USAG Teams and the Prep-Optional Teams competed at the Friendship Meet over the weekend of Feb. 26-27 at Granite State Gymnastics in Bow. The Level 4 team earned a first place trophy with a score of 109.75 and the Prep-Optional Teams also took home a first place trophy with their score of 110.30. The USAG gymnasts were looking for a score of 31.00 or higher to qualify for the second NH Sectionals held in March. The Prep-Optional gymnasts do not need a qualifying score to attend Prep-Optional States in May. The scores for the Hudson area gymnasts are as follows:

Trust Division

Kaitlyn West qualified with an all around 34.65 (2nd). She scored 9.05 (2nd) on vault, 8.50 (3rd) on bars, 8.05 (5th) on beam, and 9.05 (2nd) on floor.

Samantha Gates qualified with an all around 34.05 (3rd). She scored 8.725 (4th) on vault, 8.875 (1st) on bars, 7.7 (6th) on beam, and 8.75 (3rd) on floor.

Hannah Speight qualified with an all around 32.675 (7th). She scored 9.00 (3rd) on vault, 8.65 (2nd) on bars, 6.45 on beam, and 8.575 (4th) on floor.

Sydney Devine finished with an all around 30.30 (9th). She scored 8.10 on vault, 7.75 (8th) on bars, 6.45 on beam, and 8.00 (7th) on floor.

HOCKEY

Hollis Cavaliers Squirt 1 records two ties

In Valley League Youth Hockey action the Hollis Cavaliers Squirt 1 tied two games this past weekend.

In their first match, the Cavs displayed true grit and determination coming from behind to tie the game 4-4 . With only six skaters – Isaac Rogers, Max Sears, Sean Kelly, Alec MacEachen, Trent Costa, TJ Vitullo – and goalie Ben Goolsby suited up, the Cavs played a remarkable game, including a 5-3 penalty killing effort against an Arlington team that had 15 skaters. The Cavs offense was led by Costa’s hat trick and Rogers tied it up with just seconds on the clock.

In their second game, the Cavs faced a tough team from Concord/Carlisle. Though the Cavs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on goals by Rogers and Costa, the Concord/Carlisle Squirt team battled back to tie the game. The Cavs defense, led by Dean Poulin and MacEachen, played tough throughout the game.

SWIMMING

Nashua Storms YMCA State Championships

The Greater Nashua YMCA Storm continued its run through the championship season. The Storm had 94 swimmers achieve personal bests at the YMCA State Championships at the YMCA Allard Center in Goffstown.

Five Storm team records were broken during the meet – Jordan Tierney broke her own team record in the Girls 15 and Over 400 Individual Medley; Tyler Howard broke his former record in the Boys 13-14 200 Freestyle; Eric Howard broke his own team record in the Boys 15 and Over 200 Freestyle; Matthew Puksta set a new team mark in Boys 15 and Over Breaststroke; and the team of Aron Laborera, Gavin Roby, Charles Loucraft and John Puksta broke the team record in Boys 9-10 200 Freestyle Relay.

The team took 27 individual wins and 11 relay victories overall. Particularly strong showings included victories in multiple events by: Riley Bates, Girls 13-14 100 Breaststroke, 200 Individual Medley and 18 and Under 100 Breaststroke; Catherine Green, Girls 13-14 100 Backstroke and Butterfly; Eric Howard, Boys 15-18 50, 100, and 200 Freestyle, plus 100 Butterfly and Mixed 18 and Under 100 Freestyle; Bryan Laborera, Boys 11-12 50 Backstroke, 50 Breaststroke, 50 Butterfly, and 200 Individual Medley; Charles Loucraft, Boys 9-10 50 Backstroke and 50 Backstroke; John Puksta, Boys 9-10 100 Freestyle, 50 Butterfly, and 100 Individual Medley; Matthew Puksta, Boys 15-18 100 Breaststroke and 200 Individual Medley; and Todd Richardson, Boys 8 and Under 25 Butterfly and 100 Individual Medley.

FINS Compete at U12 Championship Meet

The Southern New Hampshire FINS swimmers made a splash at the New England 12 and Under Age Group Championship meet held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt. the weekend of Feb. 24-27.

Competing against top swimmers from more than 55 teams across New England, the team was led by Emma Gosselin, who based on qualifying times achieved during the regular season swam the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 50 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 200 breaststroke and the 100 individual medley.

She advanced to the final heats and came in first overall in the 50 breaststroke (33.31), fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.94), fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:14:11), 10th in the 200 freestyle (2:06:65), 11th in the 100 freestyle (57:26); 12th in the 200 IM (2:22:26); and 13th in the 100 IM. Katie Mahoney swam the 200 backstroke, 100 backstroke, 50 backstroke, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle and the 100 individual medley, advancing to the finals and placing 13th in the 200 backstroke (2:23:74) and 16th in the 100 backstroke (1:06:83). Mitchell Mahoney swam the 200 breaststroke; Kylie Mihok swam the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 backstroke, and 100 backstroke; and Sierra Mullin swam the 50 freestyle, the 50 butterfly, and the 100 individual medley.

The FINS U12 girls relay team of Gosselin, Mahoney, Mihok and Mullin finished eighth overall in the 200 medley relay, knocking more than 3 seconds off of their seed time (2:04:24) and fifth overall in the 200 freestyle relay, again dropping more than 3 seconds from the seed time (1:50:20).

The Southern New Hampshire FINS swim team provides a program in competitive swimming that fosters desire, dedication, and determination in young athletes in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The FINS participate in both the New Hampshire Swim Association league and the USA Swimming league and offers spring and summer training clinics in addition to the regular winter season program. Hudson Knights of Columbus Free Throw titles decided

The Hudson Knights of Columbus held its annual Free Throw Contest on Feb. 12 at the Library Street School.

The winners of the event were Christina Cabral (Girls, age 11), Emily Sullivan (Girls, age 12), Megan O’Brian (Girls, age 14) and David Whitman (Boys, age 14).

Will McDonough writing deadline approaching

The Sports Museum has set a March 15 deadline in its seventh-annual Will McDonough Writing Contest for Aspiring Sports Writers. This contest, supported by Bank of America and the Boston Globe, is judged on topic development, organization, style and mechanics. Winners will take part in an award ceremony at The Sports Museum in the TD Garden and attend the following Boston Celtics game on April 13.

Students in grades 4-12 are encouraged to apply and celebrate another great year in Boston sports through writing. To enter the contest, visit The Sports Museum’s website at www.sportsmuseum.org.

BASEBALL

Nashua Little League registration is open

Registration for the 2011 Nashua Little League season is now open. The Nashua Little League is open to boys and girls who are age 5-12 on April 30, 2011. It also offers a Challenger Division that was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 4-18. It is $35 per player with a family of three or more children capped at $75. The last try out date is today in Bishop Guertin High School’s Roedel Field House.

All 11 and 12 year olds will tryout from noon-2 p.m.; 9 and 10 year olds will tryout from 1:30-4 p.m.; returning players wishing to change teams will try out from 3:30-4 p.m.; while returning players staying with their 2010 team and anyone under the age of 9 playing in T-Ball and Farm Leagues don’t need to try out.
