FOOTBALL

Four Junior Cavs named to 2010 GSFL All-State Team

The Hollis/Brookline Junior Cavaliers topped the list of GSFL All State selections with four players receiving the league’s highest honor.

Mike Morgan, Nick Schutz and Killian Jeffreys were named to the All-State First Team and Andrew Butler was named as an Honorable Mention.

The All-State nominations are submitted weekly by the opposing teams head coach during the regular season. The criteria are focused on exposing the most impactful player from the opposing team. At the end of the season the top 22 kids are named GSFL All-State First Team members, and an additional 12 are named Honorable Mention.

It took all 23 Junior Cavaliers to post a perfect season and win the State Championship, but the four All-State players had some performances worth noting:

Morgan was an anchor on the left side of both lines that opposing teams were daunted by. The blindside was not a concern for the Cavaliers backfield. Morgan also had a highlight reel rumble for a very long touchdown during the season. Morgan’s overall play was key in the team achieving the highest points and yardage output by any team in GSFL history.

Schutz was a triple threat player that opposing teams had no answer for. He led the team in points, touchdowns, return yardage, rushing yardage and interceptions. His gaudy 18 yards per rush average led the league. Schutz scored on offense, defense and special teams and as a passer, receiver and runner.

Jeffreys came into 2010 as never have taken a snap as a quarterback. He finished the season with a league high 1,300 yards and 21 passing touchdowns. Additionally, he had great success in rushing the ball. Oddly, Jeffreys amassed these totals typically playing less than a full game due to the lopsided scoreboard.

Butler seemed to find himself in nearly every position during the course of the season. Butler led the team in tackles while playing on the line and as a linebacker. He also was third on the team in rushing and scored four long touchdowns from the tailback position.
