BASKETBALL

Nashua Nighthawks

Fourth Grade

The Nighthawks swept Wilmington, Mass., in a two-game series over the weekend. In the first game of the weekend, the ’Hawks were led offensively by Jake Robbins with 15 points, Jeffrey Reza with 10 points and Brenden Choate with 9 points. Also playing well and contributing points were Nevan Roy with 7 points, Andrew Penkala and Spencer Desrosiers with 5 points each and Casey McNally with 4 points. Defensively, the team received solid play from both Gabriel Perrault with 3 points and Chase Hart with 3 points, while Patrick Gillis and Andrew Moody controlled the board on both ends of the court and combined for 12 rebounds.

In the second game of the weekend, the young Nighthawks were once again led offensively by Robbins with 10 points, while Roy and Choate collected 6 points respectively and Reza added 5 points. Additionally, McNally scored 4 points, Penkala had 3 points, Hart, Desrosiers and Gillis rounded out the scoring. Gabe Perrault played well and controlled the pace of the game at the point guard position. Defensively, Nevan Roy had 6 block shots and Andrew Moody led the team with 7 rebounds.

Fifth Grade

The fifth-grade Nighthawks played well and defeated Salem. The entire team played well and received solid performances from John Champa with 7 rebounds and 7 steals and Xahn Frater with 13 rebounds and 4 steals. In addition, Razz Alkalay played strong defensively. Ryan Lynn and Sclyler Boykin also contributted solid points for the Nighthawks.

Eighth Grade

The eighth-grade Nashua Nighthawks dropped a close game Windham. Matt Lavallee led the scoring with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Demitri Jackson with 9 points and Alex Boudreau with 8 points also had strong games. The Nighthawks were down by 2 at halftime and the game went back and forth the entire second half; however, Windham was able to hold on for the win. Also playing strong for the ‘Hawks was Mike Osgood with 6 points and Christian Sullivan with 5 points.

BANTAM

Jets 51, Heat 41 

Trailing after the third period 35-29, the Jets outscored the Heat 22-6 in the final period. Brian Wells, the game’s high scorer, with 18 points led the Jets offense and played great defense. Other scorers for the Jets were Owen Miller and Kyle Rancourt chipping in 8 points each. Kyle Remillard had 16 points with two 3s for the Heat.

Kings 61, Suns 57

Deni Dzubik had a game high 19 points as the Kings held a fourth quarter comeback to stun the Suns 61-57 on Wednesday night. Justin Carter had 10 fourth-quarter points to lead the charge for the Kings, with Kyle Reardon chipping in 9 points of his own. Eric Sliz led the Suns with 11 points, while Ben Walker added 10 and Jake Shah dropped in 9 for the Suns. Corey Nauss played great defense in the winning effort for the Kings, while Garret Langer contributed for the Suns to shutting down some key Kings scorers.

Pacers 64, Bulls 45

High scorers for the Pacers were Kyle Palevicious with 18 points and Demitri Jackson with 16 point. Conner Baldasarro scored 11 points for the Bulls.

Suns 64, Jets 57

High scorers for the Suns were Richard Callahan with 18 points and Matt Fox with 12 points. Defensive effort was made by Garrett Langen.

High scorers for the Jets were Nick L’Heureux with 15 points and Brian Wells with 11 points. Defensive effort was made by Ben Levesque.

Girls Biddy

Tigers defeat Knights

Tigers prevailed in a well-played competitive game by both teams. Shardai Spearman, Marisa Gaudette both scored 10 points and Lexi Correa scored 4 points and made some tough baskets at the end to pull out the victory after numerous lead changes throughout the game. Molly Dee with 14 points led all scorers. Danielle Upton and Megan M. played well for the Knights.

Lakers 23, Suns 17

The Lakers defeated the Suns 23-17 in a well-played game by both teams. The Lakers scoring was led by Heather Roscoe with 6 points and Chelsea Ulery with 5 points. Krithika Suresh and Sam Willard with 4 points each also contributed in the scoring for the Lakers. The Suns were led by Liz with 8 points and Kayla with 6 points. Annanya with 2 points and Alex with 1 point also scored for the Suns

Girls Jr. Biddy

Panthers 14, Warriors 7

The Panthers defeated the Warriors 14-7 in their season opener. Both teams played smart on offense and defense. The Warriors were led by Julianna M., who scored 5 points in the contest. The Panthers leading scorers were Lauren Belair and Chloe Goforth, who each scored 6 points.

Lakers 28, Astros 10

Top scorers for the Lakers were Amber Dube, Arianna Motivala and Caitlyn Donnelly. Other points were from Carly Fryatt, Hannah Swain and Lynsey Daley.

Boys Jr. Biddy

Mustangs 34, Hawks 22

The Mustangs defeated the Hawks in a hard-fought game by both teams. Casey McNally and Andrew Penkala led the Mustangs, as well as all scorers with 10 points each. Also scoring for the Mustangs were Matt Thibault with 8 points, Dallas Kastens with 4 points and Cody Gagnon with 2 points. Defensively, the Mustangs were led by Rory Curran, Tyler Brown, Suhass Katikanend and Joe Calomo, while Nick Brown, Logan Boucher and Jack Woermer controlled the board.

Nuggets 40, Stars 33

The Nuggets edged out the Stars in a close game. Nuggets were led by Gavin Forcier with a season-high 24 points. Nuggets were also led by Zack Berthiaume, with his season-high 6 points. Great defense by Cesar Mendoza and Jack Ayer.  Stars were led by Chase 12, and Matt with 11.

Nuggets 34, Spurs 28

The lead changes several times in this matchup. Nuggets were led by Brendon Auriana with 16 points and Gavin Forcier, who scored 11. Strong defense from Bryan Boyle and Dylan Sylva. Spurs were led by Vish with 14 and JJ with 8.

Hawks 23, Falcons 21

The Hawks held off a late rally and earned a hard fought 23-21 win over the Falcons. Murray Mahoney and Jake Smith led the way with 6 points each and Aidan Gillis chipped in 4. For the Falcons, Christian Belonga and David T. each had 6, and Donovan Labatte had 5. The Falcons extended their defense and created 6 points late in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 2, and the entire gym held its breath while Colton Welch’s half-court shot rimmed out at the end of regulation.

Boys Biddy

Lancers 53, Cavaliers 29

The Lancers beat the Cavaliers 53-29 for their first win of the season. A true team effort with many contributors. The Lancers were led by Ravi Patel with 10 points, John Champa with 8, Chaz Magras 8 and Harper Niven with 6. Leading the Cavaliers were Mike Lentz with 10 and Mike Muchemore with 6.

Lancers 51, Hawks 27

The Lancers beat the Hawks 51-27 in a game closer than the final score. Leading the Lancers were Chaz Magras with 8 points, John Champa with 7, Collin Leary with 6, Ravi Patel with 6 and Sam Mena with 6. The Hawks were led by Adam Fenlasor with 9 and Casey Fisher with 6.

Pistons 48, Bullets 33

Jack Dinsmore with 14 points and Brinton MacDonald with 9 led the way for the Pistons over a determined Bullets team. Seth Mercano led the way for the Pistons second unit. Rikin Kamdar and Connor Duval each scored 6 points to lead the Bullets.

Pistons 47, Satellites 41

In a game that was close from start to finish, Max Osgood scored a season-high 14 points, Brinton MacDonald added 9 and Seth Mercano 8 to lead the Pistons over a fiesty Satellites squad. Steve Lambert had 14 points and Andrew Thibault 11 to lead the Satellites.

Cougars 41, Jazz 37

Jeremiah Pena and Sean Murphy each scored 12 points and controlled the boards to lead the Cougars to a come from behind win. The tenacious Jazz were led by Anthony Martucci with 9 points, Christian Lowell 7 points and Joey Tibanno 6 points. Cam Kessel added 6 points, while Rayquan Alleyne and Noah Ouellette were the playmakers for the Cougars

Stars vs. Knicks

Chad Olivieri, Tommy Doucette and Jack Fahey led the Stars to a big 23-8 lead in the first quarter, but the Knicks stormed right back in the next two periods, and it was a one-point game at halftime: 29-28. Sid Ganguri, CJ Mellon and Ty McCallum all contributed big for the Knicks in this comeback. In the end though, the Stars big men, including Zack Gath, established themselves down low and were key to a 57-42 Stars victory.

Stars vs. Warriors

This was a game of two worthy adversaries. Ilya Scott and R. Silva propelled the Warriors to a big 18-8 advantage after the first period. Brandon Bickom, Ben Gorelick and Derrick Downing helped the Stars keep it a 10-point game against a very good second-period Warriors team. In the second half, it was the big men who led their teams, as S. Bergeron had 16 points, and Chad Olivieri scored a huge 29 points to lead the Stars back to scratch out a 50-45 win in a wild game.

Sonics 34, Nationals 31

The Sonics edged past the Nationals in a hard-fought defensive game. Brian Inzerillo had 10 points and made two free throws with 9 seconds left to ice the game. Jordan Buckmire had 11 points and Robert Batsevich pulled down several big rebounds in the fourth quarter for the Sonics. The Nationals received strong efforts from Nick Ionuzzo, who had 9 points, and Devin Leonard and Max Fay, who each added 4.

Eagles 41, Satellites 27

Eagles contributors included Nick Koch with 6 points and 10 rebounds, Sam Malignaggi with 4 points and 4 assists, Matt Lawyer with 10 points, Cal O’Rourke with 15 points, Brandon Stempler and Jason Fox with 2 points, 4 assists and 6 boards each. For the Satellites, Lombard scored 10 points and Melendez scored 4 points.

Eagles 34, Bucks 7

Eagles contributors included Cal O’Rourke with 13 points, Jason Fox with 4 points, Sarveen Shafiyan-Rad with 3 points, Brandon Stempler, Matt Lawyer, Ben Shea, Nick Auriana and Sam Malignaggi, each with 2 points. For the Bucks, Peter Bowe, Evan Branquinho and Moises Perez each had 2 points. Jake Fitzpatrick had 1 point.

Bullets 49, Jets 29

The Bullets were led by Ashunti Brodie with 12 points and 3 assists and Connor Duval with 9 points. Ricky Constant led the Jets with 11 points.

Warriors 53, Bucks 29

Spencer Bergeron led the Warriors with 19 points, while Jack Barnes pitched in 7. Tyler Bellemore and Adam Kelliher also played well for the Warriors. The Bucks’ Stephen Signorello led the team with 12 points in the effort.

Celtics defeat Royals in OT

Down by 3 with 32 seconds left, the Celtics scored quickly, and pressure defense by Alonzo Linton enabled him to steal the ball and score with 4 seconds left to give the C’s a thrilling 46-45 win against the Royals. Luke Anzel led all scorers with 23 points, while Zavier Rumardo netted 19 for the Royals.

Celtics edge Sharks

The Celtics and Sharks battled back and forth for most of the game before the Celtics pulled away in the final minutes to post a 40-33 win. “Zo” Linton led the Celtics with 13 points, while Caden Daigle added 9 for the Green. Tyler O’Brien led the way for the Sharks with 8 points.

GYMNASTICS

Nashua takes top award

The Nashua School of Gymnastics took the top award at Winter Carnival Invitational Meet on Sunday. The gymnasts needed an All Around score of 31.00 to qualify for the upcoming Sectionals.

Level 4

Penguins Division

Corey Foster qualified with an All Around of 36.175 (1st). She earned 9.15 (4th) on vault, 8.90 (3rd) on bars, 8.85 (1st) on beam, and 9.275 (1st) on floor.

Lily Brooks qualified with an All Around of 35.275 (4th). She earned 9.20 (3rd) on vault, 8.20 (6th) on bars, 8.75 (2nd) on beam, and 9.125 (4th) on floor.

Samantha Gates qualified with an All Around of 34.10 (7th). She earned 9.10 (5th) on vault, 7.95 (9th) on bars, 8.30 (7th) on beam, and 8.75 (8th) on floor.

Kaitlyn West qualified with an All Around of 33.925 (8th). She earned 9.325 (1st) on vault, 7.30 on bars, 8.35 (6th) on beam, and 8.95 (4th) on floor.

Sydney Devine finished with an All Around of 30.875 (16th). She earned 7.90 on vault, 7.55 on bars, 8.00 (11th) on beam, and 7.425 on floor.

Polar Bears Division

Emily Colburn qualified with an All Around of 37.30 (1st). She earned 9.15 (10th) on vault, 9.40 (1st) on bars, 9.40 (1st) on beam, and 9.35 (2nd) on floor.

Brianna Vivier qualified with an All Around of 35.875 (4th). She earned 9.425 (3rd) on vault, 8.35 (10th) on bars, 9.00 (3rd) on beam, and 9.10 (6th) on floor.

Sarah St. Lawrence qualified with an All Around of 34.375 (12th). She earned 9.175 (9th) on vault, 7.65 on bars, 8.80 (6th) on beam, and 8.75 (12th) on floor.

Snow Flakes Division

Emma Lynch qualified with an All Around of 35.70 (3rd). She earned 9.55 (1st) on vault, 8.90 (4th) on bars, 8.45 (4th) on beam, and 8.80 (3rd) on floor.

Sara Thomas finished with an All Around of 30.55 (13th). She earned 7.40 on vault, 7.60 (12th) on bars, 8.10 (6th) on beam, and 7.45 on floor.

Icicles Division

Reece Greenleaf qualified with an All Around of 34.025 (11th). She earned 9.05 (10th) on vault, 8.15 (12th) on bars, 8.05 on beam, and 8.775 (9th) on floor.

Level 5

Polar Bear division

Devon Rosier qualified with an all around score of 36.375 (1st). She scored 8.80 on vault(1st), 8.75 on bars(3rd), 9.25(1st) on beam and 9.575(1st)on floor.

Kyelin King-Elalaoui qualified with an all around score of 32.20(12th). She scored 8.45(2nd) on vault, 6.40 on bars, 8.40(8th) on beam and 8.95 (4th) on floor.

Level 6

Snowflake Division

Blake Boulia qualified with an All Around score of 32.75 (11th). She scored 8.675 (7th) on vault, 7.70 on bars, 7.50 on beam and 8.875 on floor.

Icicle Division

Kayla Townsend qualified with an All Around score of 34.60 (4th), She scored 8.75 (4th) on vault, 9.30 (2nd) on bars, 7.55 on beam and 9.00 (4th) on floor.

HOCKEY

Hollis Cavaliers Squirt I

In Granite State League action, the Hollis Cavs Squirt 1 battled back to tie the Hanover Wild 3-3. The Cavs entered the third period down 3-1 but exploded in the last 5 minutes of the game with two tallies to tie the score. The Cavs goal scorers were Jonathan Young, Max Sears and TJ Vitullo with the game tying goal at 6:43 of the third. The team poured it on at the end with excellent play by Sean Kelly, Alec MacEachen, Dean Poulin, Max Porter, Trent Costa, Maddy Pitre, Austin Ciszek and goalie Ben Goolsby.

LACROSSE

Nashua Youth Lacrosse

The Nashua Blast Youth Lacrosse League is now taking girls and boys registration for the upcoming 2011 spring season. The divisions are U9, U11, U13 and U15. Nashua South clinic

Rebecca Rosata, Nashua South Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse coach, is working to increase the popularity of lacrosse in Nashua. This lacrosse program helps girls to learn lacrosse or perfect their skills for the spring season. Girls will need a stick, goggles and a mouth guard. We have a limited amount of equipment that can be borrowed the day of the clinic. Sessions are Sundays, Jan. 30, Feb. 6 and Feb. 13, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Nashua South High School gym.
