hockey

Cyclones go 3-1

After a slow start losing to the Red Rangers 6-1 in NEHL action, the Cyclones turned it around and dominated the remainder of the weekend. In game two against a strong Hanover team, the Cyclones found themselves down 2-0 early, but then they found a spark with Joey Paige scoring assisted by Davin Granahan. A few minutes later, Mitch Pelletier knocked in the tying goal unassisted.

In the second, Granahan knocks in a great rebound from a shot made by Paige off a pass by Brendan Martin. Then in the third, Nate Newton passed it out of the defensive zone to Paige who made a great pass to the right winger Connor Berry who went top shelf for the score. Pelletier then scored the open netter, to give them the 5-2 victory.

In Sunday’s first game against the Portland Pirates, Quinn Tucker and Martin were on fire going 2-1-3 and 2-0-2. Pelletier went 1-2-3 with one of his assists on Eric Langley’s goal. Paige, Dominic Frederico and Granahan also earned assists. The defense also got into the action with Bobby Haverty and Danny Shea both earning assists. The play of the game though was a save of the game made by Curtis Wirbal who out of nowhere jumped out to make a glove save on what was thought a sure goal.

The best game of the weekend was the last one against the number one GSL team, the Seacoast Spartans. Seacoast scored first, but that would be all because of the terrific defensive play of Eric Pica and Michael Zogin. Granahan scored unassisted in the second and in the third and Paige did it again, making a great pass to Martin, who got the game winner. Jack Moro was strong between the pipes late in the third when Seacoast put on the pressure pulling their goalie for the extra man.

Squirt 2’s

After making their mark all season as a strong defensive team, the Squirt 2’s offense erupted for a 9-5 victory over Twin City. Nick Dapolito led the way with his first career hat trick, Steve Licata added two goals and two assists, while Andrew Cavanagh netted two of his own and made a fantastic play behind the Twin City net to set up a third.

Ian Morse and Elise Yabroudy rounded out the scoring, with Ryan Cox adding two assists and Isaiah Kepnes and Philip Recchia earning one apiece. Recchia’s was a nice rush with a perfect flip pass to open ice to set up a break away goal for Licata. The Panthers play today in the Groton tournament.
