CHEERLEADING

PAL U15s are National Champs

The Nashua Police Athletic League Force U15 Senior cheerleaders were crowned National Champions last weekend at the American Youth Football and Spirit Natioanal Cheer Championships in Orlando, Florida. After winning the New Hampshire and Northeast Regional titles in November, the PAL girls edged out the Park Ridge Falcons of Chicago, Illinois to capture the national championship in the “Large Team-Blue” division. As a U13 squad comprised largely of the same girls, the PAL team won the U13 national championships a year ago.

Competing on the PAL squad were Morganne MacKay, Alyssia Savage, Sara Bevilacqua, Alexandra Thompson, Elizabeth Ellison, Bryanna Griffin, Justice Grondin, Jamie Lavoie, Amanda Shaughnessy, Hailey Fraize, Brianna Terrizzi, Alyssa Burns, Holly Burns, Hailey Dube, Victoria Grady, Victoria Poulin, Kaleigh Dozois, Brianna Lyons, Carmen Butler, Aneisha Canto, Alicia Columb, Amanda Boudrot, and Arie Foreman.

BASKETBALL

Nashua Boys Biddy

Cougars 40, Thunder 36

Cameron Kessel hit a jump shot with 6 seconds remaining to give the Cougars the lead 37-36 after trailing by 10 points in the 4th quarter.  Matthew Franco stole the ball, scored a lay-up and free throw after a foul for the final score.  Noah Ouellette led the Cougars with 14 points while Jeremiah Pena’s rebounding and Rayquan Alleyne’s ball handling kept the Cougar’s in striking distance.  Kevin Genao was superb for the Thunder scoring 18 points while Tyler Dubien added 8 points

Pistons 46, Cavaliers 16

Pistons defeated the Cavs by a score of 46-16.  Jack Dinsmore and Shane Legraw led the way by controlling the boards and by scoring 13 and 11 points respectively.  Connor Robbins led the 2nd unit with 6 points.  The Cavs were led by Michael Lentz and Michael Muchemore.

Sonics 44, Celtics 21

Patrick Sullivan led the Sonics with 13 points while Jordan Buckmire and Brian Inzerillo each added 9. The Celtics were led by Peter McManus who had 8 points and Alonzo Linton who added 4.

Nationals 44, Thunder 25

The Nationals defeated a determined Thunder team by a score of 44 to 25. The key to the game was their very good overall pressing team defense. The Nationals were led in scoring by Devin Leonard with 18, Max Fay and Clay Medling each had 6 and Parker Latham contributed with 4 points. The Thunder were led in scoring by Kevin Genoa with 15 and Tyler Dubien had 6 points.

Nationals 37, Jazz 21

Good team defense and a balanced scoring attack helped the Nationals defeat a scrappy Jazz team by a score of 37 to 21. They were led by Jay Patel with 10 points, Devin Leonard and Nick Iannuzzo each contributed 7 points. The Jazz were led in scoring by Joey Tibando with 8 and Kevin O’Brien had 5 points.

Eagles 48, Pistons 23

Stepping up huge for the Eagles were Cal O’Rourke with 20 points, 4 assists and 10 boards, Jason Fox with 6 points, 4 assists and 7 boards; Nick Koch with 8 points and 8 boards and Sam Malignaggi with 6 points and 3 assists.

 Coming up big for the Pistons were; Connor Robbins with 11 points 2 assists and 6 boards and Jack Dinsma with 5 points, 4 assists and 5 boards.

Warriors 52, Jets 16

Spencer Bergeron scored 14 points with the help of Illya Scott who added 8. Defense was lead by Jack Barnes and the Warriors’ team. Jishnu Shah led the Jets with 8 points.

Warriors 52, Eagles 37

Ronnie Silva (18 points) and Spencer Bergeron (14 points) helped lead the Warriors to a win. Warriors’ Defense was lead by Jack Barnes who also scored 7 points. Cal O’Rouke led the Eagles with 8 points. All of the Eagles played very well and gave a strong effort.

Stars 46, Hawks 16

The Stars took this game 46-16 against the Hawks. Chad Olivieri led the Stars with 16 points in the 1st quarter. Tommy Doucette added 4 and the Stars never looked back. Jake Fong (4points) and James Hogan-Hines (9 points) played very well and had some aggressive defense for the Stars.

Stars 45, Lancers 21

The Stars prevailed 45-21 in this contest. Brendan Murphy led the Stars with 11 points and Chad Olivieri contributed 10. Excellent defense was played by Brandon Lee, Brandon Bickom, and Nnaji Obinelo. Harper Niven was the high scorer for the Lancers with 6 points.

Nashua Boys Jr. Biddy

Hawks 38, Cougars 22

Hawks got 12 points from Murray Mahoney, 8 from Calvin Levesque, 7 from Jake Smith and 4 from Aidan Gillis to lead the Hawks to a 38-22 win over the Cougars. Fazil Soharwardi led the Hawks with 7 rebounds. Joshua Kinghorn paced the Cougars with 6 points, while Akshay Shinde and Curtis Harris each had 4.

Broncos 40, Hornets 7

Dante Young 10 pts,  Colin Manning 8 pts. great defenisve game by Ely Oster for the Broncos. The Hornets great play by Justin Cardolla, and Nathan Boardman.

Hawks 34, Celtics 14

Jake Smith led all scorers with 14, Fazil Soharwardi had 7, Murray Mahoney had 6, and Yassine Jakib scored 4 for the winners.

The Celtics were led by Jon Chasse with 4, while Alex Koutsos and Zach Almeida each scored 3.

Jazz 26, Nets 19

The Jazz defeated a determined Nets team 26-19. They were led by John Puksta who erupted in the 3rd qtr for 8 points and some great defensive play, he blocked 6 shots, not to mention the rebounding and help defense. He lead the Jazz with 14 points, Gleb Zhurauliou, Xavier Provost and Drevin Richard contributed 4 points each. The tide of this game was turned with the rest of the team playing good team defense. The Nets were led in scoring by Ben Levine with 6, Brad Dietrich with 5, CJ Dawe and Tucker Morrow contributed 4 points each

CYO

Boys Mites: St. Chris 20, St. Pats 16

The St. Christopher’s boys mites jumed out to a 7-0 lead, but St. Pat’s of Pelham closed the gap to create a barnburner down the stretch, with St. Chris ultimately prevailing 20-16. Gurads Toomy Etheir (2 pionts), GRant Coy (2), Sam Martin and Andre Laplante moved the ball well, while forwards Finn Littlefield (2), Patrick McCarthy (5), CJ Barrett (2), Mason Dane (2), Joey Guidaboni (2) and Michael Meads (3) rounded out St. Chris’ balanced scoring attack.

Littlefield turned in a strong rebounding performance at both ends of the court.

Girls Mites: St. Chris 30, St. Pius X 16

The St. Christopher’s girls mites improved to 3-0 with a 30-16 win over Manchester’s St. Pius X.

at the St. Joseph’s church hall. Molly Dee lead all scorers with 12 points, followed by Isabelle Gosselin (8), Erika Dahl (6) and Emily Moran (3). Moran was tough on defense and rebounded well at both ends of the floor.

Cadet Boys: St. Christopher’s beat IC

The St. Chris Cadet boys improved to 4-1 by winning both ends of a Saturday-Sunday doubleheader over Immaculate Conception at Nashua Catholic Jr. High. In the Saturday game, Myles Cassin-Reed set the tone early on both ends of the floor, while Brendan Barrett and Rob Holbrook helped build on the early lead resulting in a 42-19 St. Chris win. In the Sunday game, IC came out hard trying to avenge the Saturday loss, but Cassin-Reed managed to keep the see-saw battle it close with consistent scoring, while Will Barry worked hard under the offensive boards for several key putbacks, eventually managing a 40-36 St. Chris victory.

Cadet Girls: St. Chris 58, PMA 8

Despite strong floor leadership by Presentation of Mary’s Sarah Sherburne, the St. Chris Cadet girls improved to 3-0 with a 58-8 win over PMA at the Nashua Catholic Jr. High gym. Marie Laplante scored 14 points, and had plenty of offensive help from Meaghan Kerutis and Adezi Okorie (10 points apiece), Sarah Shields (8) Victoria D’Anthony (6), and Meredith Hall (4). Jackie O’Connell and Jessica Zalzal were tough off the bench, while Taylor Choate (6 points) was dominant rebounding on both ends of the court.

Nashua Nighthawks

8th Grade

The 8th grade Nighthawks posted their 1st win of the season with a 47-43 overtime win over Salem. Nashua trailed by as many as eight points in the second half but got back in the game following key three-pointers by Mike Osgood and Mike Habibi. Dan McCoy iced the game by hitting two important free throws. Osgood led the Hawks with 12 points. Devante Acorn provided a spark off the bench with 8 points, while Habibi (7 points), Alex Boudreau (6 points), Josh Goulet (5 points), McCoy (5 points), and Christian Sullivan (4 points) each played well offensively.

7th Grade

The 7th grade Nighthawks played three games over the past weekend and earned three important victories. In the opening game Nashua defeated a scrappy Andover team, 62-51. Ben Seegel led an early charge with three steals and finished with 17pts. Jared Wilson nailed a three-pointer and had a nifty steal, while Brint MacDonald contributed 5 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal. Shane LeGraw also had 9 rebounds and 9 points for the Hawks. Speedsters Collin Morrow, Patrick Sullivan and Dylan Gamache shut down the opposing guards as they combined for 10 steals. Garrett Bozek and Ryan Penkala contributed also contributed solid defense, as well as 5 points each. Chad Olivieri finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds.

In the second game of the weekend the Nighthawks defeated Pelham 47-36. The ‘Hawks had a rough start, but used defensive pressure to get a few easy layups and build momentum. The Nighthawks were down 10-8 before going on a 14-0 run to take a commanding 22-10 lead with just a few minutes left in the half. The Nighthawks had 28 steals, led by Garrett Bozek (5), Chad Olivieri (5), Ryan Penkala (4) and Ben Seegel (4). Dylan Gamache led the team in assists. Penkala (5 points, 3 rebounds), Casey Fisher (4 points), and Patrick Sullivan played well defensively. Seegel (6 points) and Olivieri (20 points, 12 rebounds) rounded out the scoring.

The Nighthawks capped off the weekend with a 49-35 win at Dracut. This was truly a team effort. Ryan Penkala and Shane LeGraw each had 3 assists, while Ben Seegel added 4 of his own. LeGraw and Chad Olivieri controlled the glass, combining for 14 rebounds. LeGraw (11pts), Olivieri (19 points) and Penkala (7pointts) were solid offensively. Jarrett Wilson (4 points) played solid defense, while Brint MacDonald contributed 2 rebounds, 2 points and 2 assists.

6th Grade

The 6th grade Nighthawks defeated Dracut 59-44. The offense was lead by DJ Frechette who scored 20 first half points. Kevin Genao and Max Osgood had 9 points each, while Owen Amigo chipped in with 6 points. Cyrus Forcier, Alex Moody, Zach Boyer, and Joey Bernard played great on the defensive end. Rohan Patel, Stephen Signerello, and Jishnu Siddabathula dominated the boards, both offensively and defensively.

5th Grade

The 5th grade team opened up their home schedule with an impressive 41-25 victory over Chelmsford. John Champa and Alonzo Linton led the ‘Hawks with 9 points each and Ryan Lynn followed with 8 points. Also contributing to the offense were Sclyler Boykin (6 points), Xahn Frater (4 points), Joshua Reeder (2 points), and Jordan Donnelly (2 points). Alex Amigo, Tilak Patel, Clayton Medling, and Razz Alkalay played well defensively and controlled the boards.

In the second game of the weekend the Nighthawks defeated Wilmington to remain undefeated. Ryan Lynn and Alex Amigo were the top scorers with 8 points each. Clay Medling, Tilak Patel and Xahn Frater had 5 points each, while playing relentless defense. Jordan Donnelly, Sclyler Boykin and Razz Alkalay contributed 4 points each. Joshua Reeder and John Champa each had 2 points to round out the scoring.

4th Grade

The young ’Hawks continued on their winning way with an impressive team victory over Windham, 52-31. Jake Robbins led Nashua with 10 points and solid defense, while Spencer Derosiers (8 points), Chase Hart (6 points), Casey McNally (6 points), and Jeffrey Reza (6 points) also played well offensively. Nevon Roy, Patrick Gillis, and Andrew Moody controlled the boards on both sides of the court, combining for 13 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Rounding out the scoring for the ‘Hawks were Brendon Choate (4 pints), Gabriel Perrault (4 points), and Andrew Penkala (3 points, 6 assists, and 2 steals).

FOOTBALL

PAL middle schoolers represent Team NH

Team New Hampshire, which included seven Nashua middle school football players and four coaches, recorded a 1-2 record at the 2010-11 UnderArmor American Youth Football and Cheer All-Star Tournament held last week at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg, Fla.

The All-Star lineup featured featured eight teams from the East Coast facing eight teams from the West Coast battling it out for the title of AYF National All Star Champions.

Team NH lost their opener against Chicago, Illinois by a score of 3-0 o a last second Chicago field goal. After a 15-6 victory over South Florida, Team NH faced Connecticut Valley in a game where Nashua PAL Force quarterback Colby Gunter connected with PAL teammate Demitiri Jackson on a touchdown pass before coming up on the short end of an 8-6 final score.

Gunter, Connor Baldassaro, Jackson, and Matt Lavallee represented the PAL Force middle school squad in the event, while Andrew DeCarteret, Kevin Smith, and Tyler Boudreau made the team from the Nashua Elks Crusaders.

The New Hampshire coaching staff included Jason Kamman and Scott Baldassaro from the PAL coaching staff, and Steve Boule and Mike Smith from the Elks staff.

HOCKEY

Panthers squirt II split pair in Mass.

The Nashua Panthers Squirt 2 squad split this past weekend’s games, losing a 2-1 battle against Andover on Saturday afternoon before rebounding to beat Winchester 3-1 on Sunday morning. Daniel Smith was solid between the pipes in both games. He turned aside several scoring chances and kept the Panthers in the game against Andover while limiting Winchester to a single goal. Spearheading a stingy Panthers defense, Justin Morse, Zach Girouard, and Philip Recchia played aggressive both games, breaking up several plays at the blue line and blanketing opponents in front of the net.

Brody MacLean opened the scoring against Winchester and Stephen Licata notched the winning goal in the second period on a breakaway, beating the goalie glove side with a nice wrist shot. Ian Morse scored the insurance goal also on a breakaway, picking up his own rebound and flipping it past the Winchester goalie. Isaiah Kepnes scored the Panthers’ lone goal against Andover.

Nashua Mite II go 2-1 over weekend

The Nashua Panther Mite II had a busy weekend going 2-1. In the first game vs. the Masco Chieftains, Derek Amaral continued his hot hand. He scored 3 times in the 9-5 win. Clare Woodford, Brooke Yabroudy added 2 goals each while Michael Guman and Tim Guman netted one apiece. Josh Parent, Andrew Frothingham, Jason Beaucourt, Daniel Shultz-Cook Dan Woodford and Chris Slater all added an assist in the win. It was a great team effort. Ben Hardy was strong again between the pipes extending their winning streak to 9 games. In the second game the Panthers beat their rivals from Tewksbury 9-6 with Ameral leading the way again. He lead the team in a come from behind victory with 4 goals. Clare Woodford and Frothingham each knocked home two apiece and Tim Guman closed out the scoring with a goal and 2 assists. Lindsay Hult was the key defenseman in defeating the Braves. In the final game of the weekend the Mites finished a home and home series with Tewksbury that ended in a 7-1 loss. Ameral was the only Panther that lit the lamp.

CROSS COUNTRY

PAL strong at USATF Nationals

After advancing through local and regional championships here on the East Coast, members of the Nashua Police Athletic League (PAL) “Cruisers” Bantam Boys and Midget Boys teams qualified to join more then 2,600 other young athletes from all over the country at the 2010 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships on Saturday, December 11th at Veterans Park in Hoover, Alabama.

The Bantam Boys Division (U10 – 3 kilometers) featured 21 of the top teams in the USA and numerous unaffilated youth runners. The PAL Bantams Team placed 15th overall and second out of the qualifying England teams.

Alexander Koutsos, running a 6:49 average pace placed first for the team and 103rd overall with a time of 12:43. Kyle Fisher was 123rd overall with a time of 12:56, follwed by Connor Dube (133rd, 13:05), Brendon Frost (144th, 13:11), John Sullivan (154th, 13:25), 8 year old David Pike (156th, 13:27) and Zackar Berthiaume (167th, 13:35).

The Midget Boys Division (U12 – 3 kilometers) included 24 qualifying youth cross country teams as well as unaffiliated runers. PAL’s Midget Boys Team also placed 15th overall and second out of the qualifying New England teams. Cameron Jackson, running a 6:13 average pace, was the top PAL finisher, placing 72nd overall with a time of 11:35. Connor Canfield was 80th overall with a time of 11:37, followed by Connor Muise (164th, 12:10), Tyler North (184th, 12:20), Aidan Sullivan (200th, 12:28), Simon Morrier (207th, 12:35) and Ryan North & Ryan Vermette ( 217th and 218th, both in 12:43).

GC Striders leave mark at Nationals

The Gate City Striders youth program left a permanent mark on USATF cross country in Hoover, Ala., the weekend of Dec. 12.

In the Intermediate Girls race, Samantha Hicks and Courtney Hawkins fought for the lead in the early stages of the 5k race at Veterans park. The two girls were neck and neck through the half way point. On the tough back half of the course Hicks ran away from the field and won her first national championship title with a time of 18:40. Hawkins struggled through some cramps to finish a respectable 10th followed by Rachel Springman 39th, Emily Benz 58th, Christiana Pike 60th and Cassie Wright 61st. The girls team took a respectable 4th place by winning the 6th runner tie breaker and missing 3rd by just 6 points.

In the Youth Girls division, Gate city placed a respectable 16th out of 26 teams. The team was led by Meghan Philpot 73rd, followed by Brianna Lippitt 83rd, Shauna Salem 114th, Melissa Hiatt 134th, Victoria Lizzotte 188th, Aimee Krafft 239th, Rachel Nakos 248th and Sabrina Bishop 260th.

Other individuals that fared well were Erica Notini in the Young Woman division 23rd & All American, Justin Carbonneau Bantam Boys 53rd, Danielle Poublon Midget Girls 94th, Tim Tamulonis Midget Boys 100th and Tim Faffard Youth Boys 119th.

GYMNASTICS

NEGTC Levels 4, 6 compete in Winter States

New England Gymnastics Training Center of Hudson competed in the Winter States held in Hampstead on Dec. 5. The Level 6 team placed third with Level 4 placing eighth. Many gymnasts took home top place individual ribbons and medals at this meet.

Nashua School of Gymnastics strong in Candyland Invitational

The Nashua School of Gymnastics participated in the Wilkey’s Invitational Meet at Wilkey’s Gymnastics in Tewksbury, Mass. The theme of the meet was Wilkey Wonka’s Candyland Invitational.

Corey Foster qualified with an All Around of 35.45 (2nd). She earned 9.40 (1st) on vault, 8.40 (4th) on bars, 9.00 (1st) on beam, and 8.65 (7th) on floor.

Samantha Gates qualified with an All Around of 34.45 (4th). She earned 9.10 (9th) on vault, 8.20 (6th) on bars, 8.40 (8th) on beam, and 8.75 (5th) on floor.

Lily Brooks qualified with an All Around of 34.35 (5th). She earned 9.30 (3rd) on vault, 7.70 (10th) on bars, 8.60 (4th) on beam, and 8.75 (5th) on floor.

Sarah St. Lawrence qualified with an All Around of 33.80 (6th). She earned 9.15 (7th) on vault, 8.20 (6th) on bars, 8.30 (9th) on beam, and 8.15 on floor.

Kaitlyn West qualified with an All Around of 33.10. She earned 9.10 (9th) on vault, 7.60 on bars, 7.80 on beam, and 8.60 (8th) on floor.

Sydney Devine finished with an All Around of 29.95. She earned 8.10 on vault, 6.50 on bars, 7.95 on beam, and 7.40 on floor.

Juniors

Emily Colburn earned an All Around of 37.10 (1st). She scored 9.20 (5th) on vault, 9.20 (1st) on bars, 9.30 (1st) on beam, and 9.40 (2nd) on floor.

Emma Lynch earned an All Around of 35.35 (7th). She scored 9.30 (3rd) on vault, 8.50 (9th) on bars, 8.55 (1st) on beam, and 9.00 (6th) on floor.

Brianna Vivier earned with an All Around of 34.00. She scored 8.90 on vault, 7.70 on bars, 8.60 (8th) on beam, and 8.90 (9th) on floor.

Reece Greenleaf earned an All Around of 33.35. She scored 8.90 on vault, 7.80 on bars, 8.35 on beam, and 8.30 on floor.

Sara Thomas finished with an All Around of 30.90. She scored 8.60 on vault, 8.10 on bars, 6.90 on beam, and 7.30 on floor.

The Level 4 team took second place. In addition, Lily Brooks won the Wonka Award on Vault “Great Toe Point” and Emily Colburn won the Wonka Award on Beam “Sticky Feet Award.”

Juniors

Jenna Hantula earned an All Around score of 34.425 (5th). She scored 8.80 (8th) on vault, 7.60 (8th) on bars, 9.375 (2nd) on beam and 8.65 (7th) on floor.

Devon Rosier earned an All Around score of 33.80 (9th). She scored 9.35(1st) on vault 7.15 on bars, 8.55 (9th) on beam and 8.75 (6th) on floor.

Kyelin King-Elalaoui earned an All Around score of 31.25. She scored 8.75 (7th) on vault, 6.85 on bars, 8.20 on beam and 7.45 on floor.

LEVEL 6

Juniors

Kayla Townsend earned an All Around score of 34.20 (3rd). She scored 9.00 on vault, 8.65 (1st) on bars, 8.45 (7th) on beam and 8.10 on floor.

Blake Boulia earned an All Around score of 32.825. She scored 9.125 (7th) on vault, 7.05 on bars, 8.45 (7th) on beam and 8.20 on floor.

WRESTLING

Nashua Youth team participates in PJ Sora Memorial Tournament

On Sunday Nashua Youth Wrestling traveled to Londonderry to take part in the P J Sora Memorial Tournament.

Nashua’s 5-8th grade team consists of students from Elm St, Pennichuck, Fairground, Nashua Catholic and Hudson Memorial middle schools. This was a day long Tourney where our 5/6 and 7/8 teams faired very well.

Placing 1st was Kevin Melanson – 81, (3-0). Capturing 2nd was Evan Manning – 153, (2-1) and Colin Oconnor -65, (2-1). Gaining 3rd place were Cam Bennett – 98, Ryan Jigarjian – 61, Taylor Thyne – 81, John Sweeney – 130, all posting 3-1 records.

Also wrestling well for Nashua was Tyler Linscott, Ryan Kielma, Ben Lugo, Aren Kennedy in the 5/6 division and in the 7/8 grade were Ryan Rice, Brian Toupin, William Truesdell, Grant Nuttall.
