Elks 39th Hoop Shoot set for Saturday

The Nashua Elks 39th annual Hoop Shoot Competition will be held Saturday, Dec. 11 at 8 a.m. at the Elm Street Middle School Gymnasium on Chestnut Street.

All interested boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 13 from Greater Nashua are invited to participate. A contestant’s age on April 1, 2011, determines his age division. There is no charge or fees to participate in the free throw program.

Boys and girls will compete separately in their respective age divisions of 8-9, 10-11 or 12-13.

Registration and drawing of shooting position will take place immediately before the start of contest at which time each contestant will shoot five warm-ups before shooting 25 free throws for a score.

Sneakers or tennis shoes must be worn and basketball uniforms are preferred but not required.

The contest usually lasts about two hours, but competing youngsters may leave as soon as their age division completes shooting.

The top three boys and girls of each division will be presented with their respective trophies and awards.

The local level of competition is the first of five, followed by the District, the State, the Regional and the National Finals. Local winners will compete in the South Districts on Jan. 8, 2011, in Nashua.

Over three million boys and girls competed nationally in last year’s Elks Hoop Shoot, with the top 72 going to the finals in Springfield, Mass. Over the years, Nashua has sent 10 Regional Champions to the National Finals: Steve Piwowski, Missy Ayotte, Debra Killmon, Ellen Tipping, Ryan Robinson, Ryan Sullivan, Michael Panagoulias, Caleb Donnelly, Max Coleman and Tom O’Hearn.

Donnelly, of Hudson, won the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Championship in 2006 in Springfield, Mass. Nashua Elks Hoop Shoot Chairman Al Savage will be assisted by members of the Elks Youth Committee and may be contacted for further information at 888-0064.

HOCKEY

Hollis Squirt I wins a pair of games

In Valley League action the Hollis Cavaliers Squirt I team defeated the Wakefield Warriors Squirt II 4-0.

Cavs goalie Ben Goolsby turned in an outstanding performance between the pipes, turning back several Wakefield players. All the Cavs goals were netted by Isaac Rogers, with Jonathan Young and Dean Poulin each having an assist.

The Cavs defensive pairs of Alec MacEachen/Max Porter and Sean Kelly/Poulin kept the Warriors in check throughout the game.

In Granite State League action the Cavs beat the Hanover Wild II 6-2.

The Cavs top offensive line of Rogers (four goals), Young and Madison Pitre (one goal) accounted for five Cavs goals. The Cavs other offensive line of Trent Costa (one goal), Max Sears and TJ Vitullo played exceptionally well.

The Cavs defensive effort was led by Goolsby in net, as well as MacEachen and Kelly on the blue line.

GYMNASTICS

NEGTC competes in 2nd State Sectional

The Level 4, 5 and 6 gymnasts from the New England Gymnastics Training Center of Hudson competed in the second State Sectional in Dover on Nov. 21. Each gymnast needed to receive a combined score of 33.00 or higher from all four events to compete in the upcoming Winter State Meet.

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS

Level 4

Ages 6-8

Vivian Le Thaovy, Nashua finished with an All Around score of 33.925. She received a 9.0 on Vault,8.15 on Bars, 7.775 on Beam 9.0 on Floor (3rd)

Isabella Bruno, Litchfield finished with an All Around score of 33.225. She received a 9.15 on Vault (2nd T) 7.35 on Bars, 8.275 on Beam, 8.45 on Floor.

Level 4

Ages 9-10

Rachael Lavalle, Pelham placed 1st All Around with a score of 35.675. She received a 8.8 on Vault. 9.15 on Bars(1st) 8.775 (1st) on Beam 8.95 on Floor (4th)

Brooke Williams, Bedford placed 3rd All Around with a score of 34.600. She received a 8.875 on Vault (4th) 8.65 on Bars(4th ) 7.95 on Beam(4th ) 9.125 on Floor(1st )

Seana Kelly, Londonderry placed All Around with a score of 33.475 She received a 8.7 on Vault, 7.9 on Bars, 8.25 on Beam (3rd ) 8.575 on Floor.

Rebecca Genotoer, Pelham finished with an All Around with a score of 32.400. She received a 9.075 on Vault (2nd ) 8.25 on Bars, 7.95 on Beam(4th ) 7.125 on Floor.

Level 5

Ages 7-8

Lillia Szewczyk, Hudson placed 2nd All Around with a score of 32.575. She received a 7.925 on Vault.(3rd) 7.6 on Bars(3rd ) 8.3 on Beam (1st) 8.7 on Floor (3rd )

Level 6

Ages 7-8

Meghan Veino, Nashua placed 2nd All Around with a score of 34.700. She received a 8.85 on Vault, 8.85 on Bars (1st) 8.45 on Beam, 8.55 on Floor .

Level 6

Ages 9-10

Tristen Witkowski, Manchester finished All Around with a score of 34.750. She received a 8.55 on Vault (2nd ) 8.55 on Bars (4th ) 8.8 on Beam (4th) 8.85 on Floor.

Jesse Carter, Litchfield finished All Around with a score of 34.550. She received 8.2 on Vault (4th ) 8.2 on Bars(4th ) 9.175 on Beam , 8.575 on Floor.

Kamryn Ford, Litchfield finished All Around with a score of 34.100. She received a 8.4 on Vault,8.55 on Bars, 8.6 on Beam (2nd) 8.55 on Floor.

Skyler Bomba, Hudson finished All Around with a score of 32.575. She received a 8.5 on Vault, 7.55 on Bars, 7.775 on Beam, 8.75 on Floor.

SWIMMING

Storm swims Crimson waters

The Greater Nashua YMCA Storm sustained progress through the mid-season at the Crimson Specialty Short-Course Meet. The multi-team meet hosted by Crimson Aquatics took place at the Greater Lawrence Technical High School Pool in Andover, Mass.

Eighty-four Storm swimmers achieved personal best times during the meet.

“This meet was a great opportunity for swimmers to get in a lot of swimming,” Storm head coach Corey Sullivan said. “Some swimmers beat their personal bests in as many as eight events.”

Carl-Nico Laborera won two events taking both the Boys 13-14 50 and 100 freestyle, coming in second in the 200 backstroke.

Alice Loucroft won Girls U8, 25 freestyle and breaststroke, while taking seconds in 25 backstroke and 50 freestyle.

Storm swimmers broke 13 team records at the meet. Eric Howard led the charge on team records by breaking seven former marks – Boys 15-over 50, 100 and 200 freestyle; 100 and 200 backstroke; as well as 200 and 400 individual medley. Younger brother Tyler Howard also broke the team record for Boys 13-14 200 freestyle.

Another brotherly assault on team records came from Mathew Puksta, Boys 15-over 200 breaststroke, and John Puksta, Boys 9-10 100 butterfly.

Emily Rego made sure the girls were represented among the record breakers by smashing the former mark for Girls 15-over 200 backstroke. Two team records were broken by Laborera – Boys 13-14 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley.

The Storm’s next meet is at Philips Exeter Academy.
