Governor Lynch honors Nashua South Cardinals

On Tuesday, June 22, at 3:30 p.m. Gov. John Lynch welcomed the undefeated Nashua Cal Ripken AAA city champions to the Statehouse – the Nashua South Cal Ripken AAA Cardinals.

The Cards rolled through a 2010 season without losing a game, finishing with a record of 22-0. The governor spent an hour taking pictures and greeting each of the boys individually.

This came after winning the Cal Ripken AAA City Championship against another Nashua South team, the Rockies. The Cards pulled out a 5-4 win over the Rockies.

Devin Gates allowed just one run and struck out four in two innings of work for the Cardinals. Harper Niven pitched the first three innings for the Rockies, striking out two and holding the Cardinals to two runs on hits by Chris Haley and Austin Long. Adam Robinson took the mound for the Cards for the middle two innings, allowing two runs on a Niven hit and Casey McNally walk and striking out three Rockies and allowing two runs.

Kavim Bhatnagar pitched the fourth and fifth innings for the Rockies, striking out three allowing three runs on hits by Haley, Long and a double by Robinson.

Members of the AAA champion Cardinals are Gates, Long, Vincent Annicchiarico, Abhay Gandhi, Robinson, Matthew Frye, Ben Lugo, Haley, Aditya Gandhi, Benjamin Morin, Anubhav Darisi, Sinjin Doeurk, as well as, coaches Eric Robinson, Farley Gates, John Long, Ben Lugo and Scott Frye.

West Braves complete perfect season with majors championship

The Nashua West Braves completed an undefeated season with a 22-0 record by defeating the South A’s 2-1 in the championship game of the Cal Ripken City Tournament.

On their road to the finals the Braves also defeated the NW Royals (6-0), South A’s (4-3), and the North Angels (7-6). In the final game, the Braves’ stellar pitching again was featured with Jacob Burbank and Larry Lassiter combining to hold a potent A’s team at bay only giving up one hit, a first inning home run from Mike Fuller.

Burbank and Lassiter combined for 11 strikeouts while only walking one batter. Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, the Braves rallied with two outs, tying the game on a Mike Osgood solo home run. The two-out magic continued when Gavin Pelletier lashed a single which was then followed up by a Burbank hit. Pelletier would then score what would turn out to be the winning run, by sprinting home on a wild pitch, giving the Braves a 2-1 lead they would not surrender.

A’s 4, Giants 0

The A’s capped off a tremendous season with a hard-fought 4-0 victory over a gritty Giants team. The A’s pitching was the story in this one, with Chad Olivieri and Mike Fuller splitting the duties. Olivieri started and pitched three innings, striking out eight and allowing two hits. Fuller pitched the final three innings, allowing no hits and no walks. Mike Levasseur was very solid for the Giants, as he pitched five innings, allowing just four hits. The A’s offense was led by Olivieri (2 for 2, walk, run scored), Fuller, Brian Toupin and bunts by Ryan and Tyler North. For the Giants, Charlie Deichmann and Owen Shea both had hits. Defensively, Patrick McDonnell made a nice play behind the plate to end the game.

Majors: City Tournament

North Angels 13, South Giants 11

The Giants jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, on hits from Riley Bourque, Ryan Penkala and Charlie Deichmann (double), and a walk from Jason Fox, but unfortunately could not hang on, as the Angels responded with five runs in the bottom portion of the inning.

The Giants offense was highlighted by a two-run home run by Tommy Lessard in the fifth inning, and productive nights from Penkala (3 for 3, double, RBI, two runs), Deichmann (double) and Nick Quadros (1 for 2, double). Also collecting hits were Brian Barrows (1 for 3, RBI, run), Bourque (1 for 4, run) and CJ Mellen (1 for 3, run).

Defensively, Fox provided a highlight by throwing out a base runner attempting to steal second base, and Owen Shea came up with a nice catch at first. On the mound, the Giants received three innings from Mellen and two innings from Penkala, who combined for seven strikeouts.

South Giants 9, NW Braves 7

The Giants stayed alive in the Nashua Cal Ripken City Tournament with an exciting win over the NW Braves. The Giants received a big day at the plate from Owen Shea, who went 3 for 3 and drove in five runs. The Giants also received productive days offensively from Ryan Penkala (1 for 1, double, RBI, three runs), and Charlie Deichmann (1 for 3, RBI). Defensively, the Giants received another solid game from Jason Fox behind the plate, as well as Brian Barrows at second. On the mound, Mike Levasseur had a very solid outing, going into the fifth inning before being relieved by Penkala.

South Athletics 9, North Mets 0

The A’s got solid pitching from Chad Olivieri, Patrick McDonnell and Mike Fuller to defeat the Mets 9-0 at Dube Field. Olivieri (3 for 3) started the offense with a home run. Anthony Martin had two hits and three RBIs, including a clutch two out single up the middle. Nikhil Karnane made a nice catch in right with the bases loaded to help the A’s out of a jam. Mike Fuller had two hits, including a double and Tyler North had a single.

West Braves 4, South Athletics 3

The A’s battled the undefeated West Braves and came up just short in an exciting extra-inning contest. The Braves went up 2-0 in the first inning and were held scoreless through the fifth. The A’s scored on a hit by Tyler North and an error to make it 2-1. In the top of the sixth, the A’s fought back.

Chad Olivieri battled through a nine-pitch at bat and lined a double to right. After stealing third, he scored on a balk.

With the score tied, Mike Fuller hit a home run to left to put the A’s up 4-3. However, the Braves answered in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on, JP Burbank hit a ball that was initially ruled a home run, which would have ended the game; however, was changed to a double and one runner was allowed to score, tying the game.

Fuller worked out of a jam to send the game to extra innings. In the eighth, Patrick McDonnell came in to pitch after catching seven innings, and despite pitching very well, allowed a single to center scoring the winning run for the Braves.

South Athletics 8, South Giants 3

The A’s and Giants met for the fifth time this season, with the A’s ending up on top 8-3. CJ Mellen started for the Giants and pitched three innings. Mike Levasseur pitched two, striking out two.

Chad Olivieri pitched the first two, allowing no runs. Mike Fuller pitched two solid innings and Patrick McDonnell battled through an inning. The A’s needed Olivieri to come back in and pitch the fifth and he struck out the side.

The A’s finished with Anthony Martin, who came in after a long layoff from pitching and gave the A’s exactly what they needed. Martin allowed no hits and struck out two. For the Giants, Riley Bourque and Brian Barrows had hits. The A’s offense was led by Olivieri (3 for 3, home run), Fuller (homer), Tyler North, Ryan North and Brian Toupin.

South A’s 5, NW Royals 0

Defense and pitching were the keys to the A’s victory. Jonathan Zanzerkia played was a vacuum at third base, fielding six ground balls and tagging a runner out to end the game.

Mike Fuller was once again overpowering on the mound, yielding two hits in four innings of work. The game was scoreless in the fourth when the A’s started a key rally. With two outs and no one on, Brian Toupin drew a walk, then stole second and third.

Tyler North then had a hit to center, scoring Toupin. North went to second on a balk, then moved to third on a hit by Rohan Patel.

Patel took off for second on a delayed steal, drawing the throw and scoring North. In the fifth, Zanzerkia singled and stole second and third, then scored on a passed ball.

With the score 3-0, Chad Olivieri hit a home run to right, followed by another home run by Fuller, making the score 5-0. Olivieri closed out the game with two innings, allowing a walk and no hits.

South A’s 23, NW Angels 5

The A’s got started with three runs in the first and never looked back. Chad Olivieri started and pitched two, allowing one run and recording three strikeouts. Patrick McDonnell pitched the third, and Mike Fuller finished the game in the fourth. The A’s received hits from Olivieri, Fuller, Tyler North, Brian Toupin, Johnny Zanzerkia and Rohan Patel.

AAA: Nashua South Championship

Cardinals 6, Rockies 2

The Cardinals hosted the Rockies for the Nashua South AAA Championship. Strong pitching by the Cardinals’ Devin Gates (six strikeouts) held the Rockies to one run over four innings.

The Cardinals got on the board with a hit from Adam Robinson in the fourth to score Austin Long from second and took the lead on a stong hit by Ben Morin.

The Cardinals added to their lead in the fifth with hits by Abhay Ghandi, Sinjin Doeurk, Chris Haley, Long, Robinson and Gates making it 6-1 before the Rockies added another in the top half of the sixth.

Great fielding by Haley, who caught a great pop up fly to end the game.

AAA: City Tournament

South Cardinals 13, NW Orioles 0

Strong pitching by the Cardinals’ Devin Gates and Adam Robinson held the Orioles to solid hits by Lexis Gayac, Isaac Bates, Nathan Nugent (double) and Chris Baluzzi.

The Cardinals were able to put together a strong offensive performance with nine runs in the first with solid hits and heads up base running.

Also pitching for the Cardinals was Robinson. The Orioles received solid pitching from Trey LeGraw and Tyler Moraros.

South Cardinals 14, West White Sox 2

Strong pitching by the Cardinals’ Adam Robinson held the White Sox at bay in the first two innings striking out four and allowing no runs. The Cardinal bats came alive in the first with great hits by Chris Haley (double), Devin Gates (double), Ben Lugo, Ben Morin (double) and an in-the-park home run by Austin Long. Ahbay Ghandi took the mound and along with some great fielding, managed to keep the White Sox to two runs (two strikeouts in the top of the fourth).

South Cardinals 12, NW Braves 2

The Cardinals’ Devin Gates pitched two solid innings, striking out four, while the Cardinals Austin Long, Adam Robinson and Gates were able to account for three runs in the first.

The Braves battled back in the fourth inning with two runs on heads up base running and a solid hit by Cam Nixon.

The Cardinals closer, Long, came in the fifth striking out two and getting some great defensive support by second baseman Chris Haley.

Minors: Nashua South Tournament

South A’s win title

The Nashua South Cal Ripken Minor League A’s win 2010 Championship. Jake Smith pitched a complete game, and had 14 strikeouts in the title game.

Joining Smith on the championship roster are Justin Mushrow, Ryan Rutstein, Adam Paquette, Brendon Frost, David Thurston, Daniel Morrison, CJ Kapopoulos, Jake Smith, Jack Vogel, John Sullivan, James Deichmann and coaches Tom Keefe and Dave Buckley.

Cardinals 8, Giants 4

The Giants’ Nathan Cormier pitched a solid four innings, striking out nine Cardinals batters, but the Cardinals were able to keep the Giants scoreless through five innings courtesy of Nolan Foss and Andres Hulfachor pitching.

Foss went two innings striking out six and Hulfachor went three innings striking out eight in the win.

Parker Obenhofer came in to pitch the sixth, striking out two, while Timmy Eaton played well behind the plate for the Cards. Michael Jolicoeur received the game ball for his double in the fifth inning.

Offensively, Hulfachor (3 for 3) led the Cards, while Riley Lawless, Eaton and Foss also had productive days at the plate. Offensively for the Giants, Branden Yan, Cormier, Ryan Murray and Kyle O’Connor each had hits.

MCAA

Cubs beat Marlins for majors title

The Cubs beat the Marlins 5-4 to win the MCAA championship on June 14 at the North River Road Field in Milford.

The Marlins came on strong, scoring twice in the first inning with their first two batters, Jacob McMasters and August Darula.

Strong pitching by Mason Gaudette and good fielding by the Marlins defense kept the Cubs off the board for a few innings, but the Cubs were able to battle back to put a few runs on the board to tie things in the fourth inning.

The Marlins took the lead again with a run by Jared Blanc. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cubs’ Padrick Harvey tied the game and Nicholas Ronan had the go-ahead run and the Marlins were unable to score in the top of the sixth inning giving the Cubs the title.

AAU

Knights sweep Hawks in U13 action

The U13 New Hampshire Knights defeated the Hudson Hawks in a division twinbill. In the first game, Brendan Martin pitched well in relief as he threw five shutout innings striking out five. Anthony Garuti was outstanding behind the plate. The Knights were led by Dario Vitagliano, Matt Lavallee, John Vidal, Josh Goulet and Garuti, who each had two hits.

In the second game, Nick Dube, Lavallee and Shea Whalen pitched well, combining to allow only three runs. Cameron Cox played well at catcher. Offensively the Knights were led by Goulet, Mike Demers and Lavallee, who had two hits each while Jeremy Ouellette scored two runs.

Members of the champion Cubs are Kody Palladino, Kyle O’Keefe, Noah Lavoie, Anthony Ruffini, Mark Madigan, Nick Ronan, Connor Hodgkins, Colby Hagen, Andrew Schoolcraft and Kirk Palladino.

Members of the runner-up Marlins are Jared Blanc, Jack Burnham, Alex Girard, Nate Hopkins, Mason Gaudette, Matt Hattenburg, August Darula, RJ Humphreys, Zachary Olsen, Chris Pervere, Jake McMaster, head coach Rob Keller, statistician Trevor Girard and assistant coaches Scott Gaudette, Ray Humphreys and Jayson Darula.

Milford Mist win 2nd title in 3 years

The Milford Mist U12 won the championship game against the Brookline Wahoos on June 21 at Keyes Field in Milford. This is the Mist’s second championship in three years.
