Nashua Blast-Redman win state title

The Nashua Blast-Redman U11 team came to play at last Sunday’s New Hampshire Youth Lacrosse tournament in Londonderry.

During the first round of play, the Blast displayed exceptional lacrosse skills to secure their place in the final game by defeating Cocheco 7-2.

In final game, against a very talented Bedford team, the Blast outscored their opponent 13-7 to earn the title “Best in New Hampshire.”

The 2010 undefeated team of Doug Barker, Troy Bottari, Alex Bozek, Zac Clancy, Tyler DuBien, Kyle and Peyton Fisher, Ryan Fitzgerald, Will Haller, Korey Holt, Colin Manning, Brendan Martin, Connor McDowell, Alex Moody, Owen Mooso, Nathan Newton, Joey Paige, Ian Read, Todd Redman and Dylan Terenzoni all contributed to Nashua’s championship. The team was coached by Rod Redman, Frank Bozek and John Fisher.

Nashua South Cal Ripken

A’s win minor league title

Jake Smith pitched a complete game, striking out 14 to lead the Nashua South Cal Ripken A’s to the 2010 minor league championship.

Members of the championship team are Justin Mushrow, Ryan Rutstein, Adam Paquette, Brendon Frost, David Thurston, Daniel Morrison, CJ Kapopoulos, Smith, Jack Vogel, John Sullivan, James Deichmann and coaches Tom Keefe and Dave Buckley.

Majors: Rockies 12, Phillies 5

The Phillies’ offense was led by Max Coffin (2 for 3, double), Noah Toland, Stephen D’onfro, Zach Cunningham, Chris Fischer and Jacob Derusha. Coffin and Cunningham pitched well for the Phillies.

The Rockies received offensive contributions from Collin Morrow (4 for 4), Ben Seegel (3 for 3, HR), Matt Lawyer (3 for 3, HR), Nick Koch (3 for 4, double) and Alec Marshall (2 for 4, double).

Majors: Royals 6, Orioles 4

The O’s started quick, going up 4-0 in the second on hits by Keenan Dwyer (double), Chad Hult and Kyle Capone. In the third, the Royals answered with a home run from Owen Amigo (2 for 3).

Also contributing offensively were Alex Amigo (2 for 2), Luke Anzel and Steve Signorello (HR). Pitching was also great during this game, with the O’s Dwyer and Cam Stockman pitching well, while the Royals’ Signorello and Ryan Szczygielski pitched lights out.

Majors: Rockies 8, Giants 7

The Rockies and Giants played an exciting game that came right down to the last inning. The Rockies were led by Ben Seegel (3 for 3, grand slam), Collin Morrow, Cam Paquette and Nick Koch. The Rockies also received solid pitching from Seegel and Matt Lawyer.

The Giants received big games from Ryan Penkala (3 for 3, double, HR), Charlie Deichmann (2 for 3, HR), Brian Barrows (3 for 4) and CJ Mellen. On the mound, Jason Fox, Mellen and Penkala pitched for the Giants.

Majors: A’s 12, Royals 1

The A’s scored in every inning as they picked up a win in their first playoff game. Johnny Zanzerkia was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Brian Toupin and Mike Fuller each had hits and RBIs. Chad Olivieri (3 for 3, double, HR, four runs scored, five RBIs) rounded out the offense.

The Royals offense was led by Steve Signorello and Owen Amigo (two hits) and Luke Anzel. Signorello started and pitched three, striking out four. Ryan Szczygielski also pitched two innings for the Royals.

Olivieri started for the A’s and went four, striking out seven. Fuller closed out the game with two perfect innings, throwing 17 pitches and 15 strikes, allowing no hits and fanning four. Fuller and Olivieri executed a pick-off play at second and Anthony Martin was again solid at first base.

Majors: Giants 7, Orioles 3

The Giants’ offense came alive in the second and third innings, scoring five and two runs, respectively. Offensively Charlie Deichmann (2 for 3), Ryan Penkala, Brian Barrows, Nick Quadros, Tommy Lessard, Cam Kessel and CJ Mellen all had productive days at the plate.

Defensively Quadros and Kessel made great plays at second and left field, respectively. On the mound, Mellen went four strong innings, striking out four and holding the Orioles scoreless. Pitching for the Giants was Mike Levasseur and Ryan Penkala, who came in to close the game in the sixth.

The Orioles Cam Stockman pitched five solid innings and struck out four batters. Offensively the Orioles received hits from Christian Lowell, Keenan Dwyer and Kyle Capone.

Majors: Phillies 8, Royals 4

The Phillies did the unexpected and won their first game of the season. Zach Cunningham played well for the Phillies both at the plate and on the mound. Also playing well for the Phillies were Noah Toland, Max Coffin and Gage Donaghue. The Royals were led by Owen Amigo and Spencer Durand.

Majors: A’s 15, Rockies 5

The A’s defeated the Rockies 15-5 to advance to the championship game. Mike Fuller pitched three innings, allowing no hits, one walk and striking out seven. Patrick McDonnell pitched the final three for the A’s, battling through the rain and some shaky defense.

Cam Paquette started for the Rockies and Carter Cormier struck out four in his four innings of work. The A’s benefited from home runs by Brian Toupin (2 for 4, two RBIs) and Fuller (2 for 4, five RBIs).

Chad Olivieri (2 for 4, three runs, two RBIs), Anthony Martin (3 for 4), Johnny Zanzerkia and Ryan North also had hits. Nick Koch and Alec Marshall had hits for the Rockies, while Anthony Yan scored two times. Tyler North made a nice running catch to end the game.

Majors: Giants 8, Phillies 6

The Giants defeated the Phillies to remain alive in the South playoffs. The Giants received big offensive days from Ryan Penkala (2 for 2, HR, two runs), and Owen Shea (2 for 2). Also collecting hits were Riley Bourque and Tommy Lessard. Defensively, CJ Mellen had a great day at third base. On the mound, Jason Fox, Mellen and Penkala pitched well. The Phillies received hits from Noah Toland (2 for 3), Max Coffin, Zach Cunningham, Jack Leatherman and Chris Fischer (2 for 3). Coffin and Cunningham pitched well and combined for three strikeouts.

Majors: Giants 14, Rockies 13

The Giants and Rockies played an exciting game that came down to the last inning. With the win, the Giants will face the A’s for the Nashua South championship.

Despite being down eight runs, the Giants never gave up and kept battling. The Giants were aggressive on the bases and utilized the entire team at the plate, with nine of the 12 players collecting hits.

The Giants were led by Brian Barrows (3 for 4, RBI), Riley Bourque (2 for 3 RBI), Ryan Penkala (2 for 3, two RBIs), Owen Shea (2 for 3, two RBIs) and Nick Quadros (2 for 3). Also collecting hits were Jason Fox, Jacob wilcox, CJ Mellen (two RBIs) and Mike Levasseur. Charlie Deichman also collected a key RBI. Defensively, Tommy Lessard made a key catch in right field to save at least two runs. On the mound Mellen and Penkala combined for eight srikeouts.

The following Rockies had big days at the plate: Collin Morrow (2 for 4), Nick Koch (2 for 4), Matt Lawyer (2 for 3) and Connor Prangley (2 for 3). Also collecting hits were Alec Marshall, Cam Paquette, Alec Juknievich and Carter Cormier.

AAA: Rockies 10, Astros 9

The Rockies edged the Astro’s 10-9. Harper Niven, Kavim Bhatnagar, TJ Gillis and Casey McNally all pitched well for the Rockies. Owen Mooso played excellent defense behind the plate for the Astros keeping the Rockies’ runners at bay. The Astros’ Erika Wentz and Rockies’ Makena Leezer each smacked triples. Jake Fitzpatrick played solid defense for the Rockies.

AAA: Rockies 13, Giants 12

The Rockies were able to hold off the Giants in an exciting game that included a three-run homer by the Giants’ Stephen Mclendon. Harper Niven pitched three strong innings for the Rockies. Casey McNally and Jake Fitzpatrick led the Rockies’ offense. Zach Finkelstein (double) provided additional offense for the Giants.

AAA: Rockies 12, Giants 11

The Rockies prevailed over the Giants 12-11 in a well played playoff game, earning a trip to the championship game against the Cardinals. Both teams’ pitchers, Harper Niven for the Rockies and Zach Finklestein for the Giants had quality performances. Harper along with TJ Gillis, Kavim Bhatnagar and Jake Fitzpatrick had RBI producing hits.

Minors: Blue Jays 7, Giants 6

The Blue Jays pulled out a 7-6 extra inning victory over the Giants. Eric Patricio pitched six strong innings for the Jays. CJ Dawe pitched a scoreless seventh for the save. After starting out in a 5-0 hole, the Giants fought back to tie the score at 6-6.

The Giants’ Nathan Cormier had nine strikeouts and Joey Buturla struck out five over three innings of work. Offensively, the Giants’ Brandon Yan, Catherine Covert, Ryan Murray and Brendan Trombley had big performances.

Minors: Giants 14, Orioles 7

The Giants’ Nathan Cormier pitched well, striking out five and allowing no runs for the win. The Orioles’ Nate Zalzal, Mason Linscott, Brendan Choate and Eren LaBonte also pitched well, combining for 12 strikeouts. Offensively, the Giants showed patience at the plate and added runs on walks and hits by Brandon Yan and Brendan Trombey (3 for 3). The Orioles responded with hits by Mason Linscott, Eren LaBonte, Nate Bergerson and Ryan Joransen and Nathan Zalzal (triple).

Rookies: Mariners 11, Phillies 11

The Phillies and the Mariners played to an 11-11 tie. The Phillies’ Liam Bourque made a great defensive play off the bat of Geoffrey Lynch. However, Lynch returned the favor in the bottom of the inning by tagging out Bourque at third. The hit of the game came from the Mariners’ Matthew Zeichick (double).

Braves win league championship

The Braves capped off their season by being crowned as the league playoff champions by defeating the Cubs 10-3.

The Braves offense pounded out four home runs on the day. Jacob Burbank (three hits) led the offense with a pair of the long balls while also driving in four runs. Gavin Pelletier and Chris Cruz accounted for the other Braves homers.

Mike Osgood, Pelletier, Burbank and Cruz all scored a pair of runs. Max Osgood had a steller day at the plate collecting three hits (double). Burbank got the win on the mound, striking out five in three innings of work. Larry Lassiter also went two scoreless innings and struck out three.

Patrick Soucy and Xavier Emond both had singles for the Cubs.

AAU

U13 Knights split with Colonials

The New Hampshire Knights lost to and then defeated the New England Colonials in U13 AAU baseball action.

In the first game, The Colonials won 5-1 as they out-hit the Knights 8-6. Tom Schmalz had two hits for the Knights.

In the nightcap, the Knights out-hit the Colonials 13-11 and outscrored them 20-12. The Knights were led by Brendan Martin, Dario Vitagliano, Shea Whalen and Jeremy Ouelette, who each had two hits.

Nick Dube, Anthony Garuti, Matt Lavallee, Vitagliano and Ouelette all scored three runs each. Lavallee pitched well for the Knights allowing three runs, while walking only two and striking out four. John Vidal pitched well in the twinbill, striking out five, walking none and allowing five runs over six innings.

U14 Knights beat GS Marauders

The New Hampshire Knights beat the Granite State Marauders 2-1 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The Knights were led by the pitching of Nick Penkala. Penkala pitched brilliantly allowing only two runs in the complete-game victory. Evan Richardson played well behind the plate for the Knights.

The Knights were leading in the 10-9 in the fourth inning of Game 2 when it was discontinued due to rain and will be completed at a later date. The Knights were led offensively by Matt Fortin, Jordan Oelkers, Chas Dewitt and Richardson. Robert Flohr pitched well in the second game and Fortin was effective behind the plate.
