Nashua’s Hagen takes on Boston 5k

By Staff | May 2, 2010

Most 11 year olds are kicking back playing video games or watching television on Sunday mornings.

Not Michael Hagen.

This Ledge Street School student is outside and running. Such was the case marathon weekend in Boston, when the Nashua PAL Junior Olympian and Gate City Striders member took part in the Boston Marathon weekend’s 5k Sunday morning race.

Hagen ran a 22 minute, 12 second race – finishing 414th overall out of 4,329 competitors, while taking 14th out of 114 in his 10-14 age bracket and closing at 332nd out of 1,846 male runners.

Hagen, nicknamed Moose, started running last fall when Ledge Street School offered an after school program run by Granite State Flash coach Mike Merra, who volunteered to coach at the school since it didn’t have a program. Merra was very instrumental in getting Hagen interested in and enjoying cross country running.

Hagen competed all the way to the Junior Olympics National Championship meet in Reno, Nev., where he placed 113th in the country in his age division in the 3k.

Then this winter, he followed it up with a strong showing in the “Freeze Your Buns” series – which is a series of five 5k races run at Conway Arena.

Following one of the series races, Hagen was checking his results on the web and came across a Boston Marathon link.

He noticed the option of a 5k put on by the Boston Athletic Association and had his parents sign him up.

His next race will be on Mother’s Day at the Southern New Hampshire Medical Center 6k, with this year’s proceeds going to the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition’s Support Services Fund. This will be his longest race to date.
