Litchfield Softball kicks off its season

The cold and wet weather could not stop Litchfield Girls Softball from celebrating their Opening Day on Saturday, April 17.

The event started with a parade for the girls and coaches to the new softball fields at Roy Memorial Park, where Governor John Lynch had a few words of praise, and some great softball tips. There was a ceremony from the Litchfield Recreation Commission to dedicate the fields to Jim Bliss and the Jewett family, who have both given so much to the youth of Litchfield.

The morning ended with a few great softball games to begin the 2010 softball season.

STREET HOCKEY

Nashua Catholic 13, Elm St./Fairgrounds 9

In Nashua PAL Street Hockey action, the Nashua Catholic Jr. High squad defeated a combined Elm St.-Fairgrounds team 13-9 at the outdoor street hockey rink at the Nashua Boys and Girls Club.

Although the Elm St.-Fairgrounds team led after two periods, Nashua Catholic goalie Gary Storace came out from the net to play on the forward line and scored a hat trick in under two minutes to put NC ahead to stay.

ICE HOCKEY

Cavaliers Pee Wee IIs win DSL title

Finishing the regular season in first place, the Hollis PeeWee II team completed the mission by beating Acton/Boxborough 2-1 in a shootout for the championship.

Nick Herbert picked up the win in net with help from the defensive unit of James Young, Alex Fagan, John McPartlan, Evan Conners and Evan Daskalos.

The forward lines of Cameron Boisvert, Ty Gouveia, Troy Thirkell, Nick Sengstaken, Ian Birmingham, Ty Roberge, Dalton Doire, Gordon Sears and Devin Brickett created pressure in the A/B end of the rink.

Doire started the scoring with a redirection off a hard shot by McPartlan in the second period. A/B tied the game up by the end of the period. That’s how the game ended in regulation, and with no scoring in the five minute overtime, the game went to a shootout.

Herbert stopped all five A/B shooters playing a masterful game as he has all season. Boisvert had the only goal of the shootout and won the MVP trophy.

BASEBALL

Nashua South Cal Ripken

Majors: Giants 7, Orioles 6

The Giants and Orioles opened the 2010 regular season with an exciting game, ending with a walk-off single by Ryan Penkala in the bottom of the sixth.

The Giants received big offensive days from Penkala (4 for 4), Brain Barrows (2 for 3), Jason Fox (one hit, two walks), Mike Levasseur, Riley Bourque and Cam Kessel. The Giants also received solid pitching from Fox, Levasseur and Penkala, who combined for seven strikeouts. Defensively, Owen Shea was solid behind the plate, while CJ Mellon had a good game over at third base.

The Orioles offense was led by Chad Hult (3 for 3, double), Christian Lowell, Kyle Capone, and Keenan Dwyer. The Orioles also received solid pitching from Dwyer and Nick Perkins, who combined for four strikeouts. Defensively, Hult was extremely solid behind the plate, and Perkins fielded his position very well on the mound.

BOYS LACROSSE

Nashua Blast U13C 10, Hampton U13C 3

The Nashua Blast U13C won their first away game against Hampton. Max Serra and Riley Morse led the way offensively scoring three goals each to lead the Blast to their second win of the season. Cam Rourke had two goals, while Patrick Shah and Max Fay also scored for Nashua.

Goalies Collin Leary (four saves) and Dakota Lane (eight saves) were crucial to the defense with strong efforts in the net.

Hampton U11 9, Nashua Blast U11 6

The Nashua Blast U11 team hosted Hampton at Stellos Stadium. The boys got out to a quick lead in the first half with goals scored by Andrew Brown, Anthony Costa, Jared Zeichick and Matt Lambalot. Midfielders and attackmen, led by Nick Page, Jacoby Wesson and Cyrus Forcier transitioned the ball well on many occasions.

In the first half, goalie James Petz had 12 saves, while goalie Andrew Brown had seven saves in the second half. Both goalies had help from a strong defensive lineup led by Max Osgood, Mason Miller, Jacob Holmes, Zac Wilson and Brandon Lacey.

Nashua Blast U13A 8, Hampton U13A 5

On Sunday the Nashua Blast U13A team won 8-5 against a strong Hampton squad. Leading the Blast offense was Sean Holmes and Steven Saucier with three goals each.

Tom Haller and Tyler Searles had a goal each. Andrew DeCarteret, Sean Chipman, Joey Tibando, Finn Littlefield, Travis Moore and Sean Murphy all contributed to a strong defensive effort. In his first game in goal this season, Ryan Marvin had nine saves.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Chester/Derry 16, Nashua Blast U11 3

Zoe Fillebrown, Arrianna Mohler and Danielle Upton all had a goal each for the Blast, but it wasn’t enough against Chester/Derry.

Kristen McIntire and Lindsay Holmes made several saves in net, while Katherine Eastland, Hannah Fortin, Payson Mooso and Alexia Keely also played well.

Chester/Derry 8, Nashua Blast U15 5

The Nashua Blast U15 girls lacrosse team fell 8-5 to Chester/Derry. Molly Mulcahy had two goals and Sierra Mullin, Victoria Kane and Kara Upton all chipped in with one each.

Catherine Connoly and Riley Bates led the defense for the Blast and Victoria Shattuck played well in goal.
