Family Day will have a little extra flare this year for members of Nashua South Cal Ripken Baseball.

During the April 17 festivities, which are scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., a fixture in Nashua youth baseball for more than 30 years will be honored by the league and Nashua Mayor Donnalee Lozeau.

During a ceremony at 10:15 a.m., the Lower Shady Field at Kirkpatrick Park will be renamed Dave Drescher Field.

Drescher, who has been a coach with Nashua South since 1975 and coached hundreds of players over that span, continues to stress sportsmanship, as well as the fundamentals of baseball and fundamentals of young adulthood with Gate City youth.

The importance placed on education – always stressing school first – and the importance he places on family – instituting a long-standing practice that his Giants will never practice or play on Mother’s Day – Drescher has been, and continues to be an athletic fixture in Nashua.

You can go to almost any field or gym in the city and find someone that played for Drescher. This group includes both fathers and sons.

His former players have gone on to play in middle school, high school and college. In fact, the current baseball program at Nashua High School South is littered with former Giants.

In addition to these athletes, you will find even more former players that went on to college, post-graduate degrees, and successful careers.

Also expected to attend the ceremony are Ward 9 Alderman Jeff Cox and New Hampshire Cal Ripken commissioner Fred Lajoie.
