Mahgoub headed to Regionals

Aya Mahgoub, a 12-year-old resident of Nashua, competed in Level 9 at the Massachusetts state championships.

She qualified for Regionals with a second-place score of 36.425 in the all-around. She finished first on bars with a score of 9.075 and second on vault with a total of 9.450.

Mahgoub is competing for Brestyan Gymnastics in Burlington, Mass., the home of Alicia Scaramone the silver Olympic medalist and Aly Raisman, who is currently on the national team.

Saya second at Mass. states

Third-year, Level 10 gymnast Melynee Saya competed this past weekend at the Massachusetts gymnastics state championships, in Worcester, Mass.

In her final year of Junior Olympic competition, Saya became the Massachusetts floor routine champion within her senior age division by placing first with a 9.45.

She also placed third on vault with a 9.175, and tied for third with a 9.25 beam routine.

Saya also scored an 8.3 on bars, completing an all-around score of 36.175. Saya placed second within her age division.

A senior honors student at Nashua High School North, Saya will next compete in two weeks at the Regionals, where she will attempt to qualify for her third consecutive trip to the Junior Olympic Nationals, which will be held in Dallas this year.

Time for summer camp

Sign-ups for Nashua Parks & Recreation Summer Camps are now being accepted.

Registration forms are available at all Nashua private and public schools at the main office, Nashua Public Library, City Clerks Office at City Hall, Jeannotte’s Market, Bright Spot Convenience Store and at the Recreation Office at Greeley Park.

A registration form can be downloaded from the city Web site at www.gonashua.com as well as a complete listing of all the summer camps being offered. Summer camps include basketball, football, soccer, drama, volleyball, field hockey, ice hockey, Mighty Hawks Youth Camps, tennis, science camps and track and field. New camps this year include archery and cooking. Call the Recreation Office at 589-3370 with any questions.

Three swim sessions are set

The Nashua Parks & Recreation Department will begin accepting summer swim lesson registrations on Monday.

Registration forms will be available at the Recreation Office in Greeley Park and on the Web site at www.gonashua.com.

Parents can sign up their child for two of the three sessions prior to July 5. After July 5, registrations will only be accepted for the remaining session(s). Session dates are June 28-July 9, July 19-30 and Aug. 9-20.

Swim lessons are $20 per child or a maximum of $60 per family per session. Early Bird sign-ups will run from Monday through June 24. Each session runs two weeks and lessons are one-half hour in length. All lessons take place between 9 a.m.-noon.

Public trip schedule released

The Nashua Parks and Recreation Department has released its Public Trip Schedule for this summer. Two trips are slated for New York City, one an overnight excursion, and the third to see two Red Sox games in Toronto.

On Saturday, June 26 a bus will depart from Greeley Park at 6 a.m. for New York City and return home to Greeley Park at 11:30 p.m. Included in this trip – which costs $60 per person – will be the bus ride, donuts and juice, movies and driver gratuity. There are only 50 seats available for this trip.

The overnight trip to New York takes place June 26-27. The bus will depart from Greeley park at 6 a.m. on Saturday and return to Greeley park at 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Upon arrival in NYC, we will check into the hotel at the Plaza at the Meadows, which is through the Lincoln Tunnel in New Jersey. For transportation to and from the Plaza, there are shuttles and/or trains that run to Midtown Manhattan every 15 minutes and return back to the plaza.

Included in this trip – which costs $225 per person for single or $155 per person for double occupancy (actual rates including all taxes associated with the hotel rooms) – will be the bus ride, hotel room, movies, juice and donuts and driver gratuity. The hotel rooms will be located at the Holiday Inn in Seacaucus, N.J. This trip must be booked no later than Monday, May 31 in order to secure rooms. There are only 50 seats available for this trip.

To catch Red Sox action against the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto the weekend of July 10-11, contact Scott Painter at Painters@nashuanh.gov. The trip will include two games in Toronto between the Red Sox and Blue Jays. There will be maximum of 50 tickets available for this trip.
