BGCGN wins middle school New England Rebel Classic
The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua wrestling team won the middle school (fifth-eighth grade) division championship at last weekend’s New England Rebel Classic, hosted by the Derry Boys and Girls Club at the Pinkerton Academy Field House.
Over 500 wrestlers from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont competed in the event. The Nashua squad edged out runner-up Smitty’s Wrestling Barn of Danville, as well as the Derry Boys and Girls Club and the Manchester YMCA Eagles to claim the top prize. In addition, the BGCGN team was given the Sportsmanship Award, awarded annually by vote of the referees officiating the tourney.
Five Nashua wrestlers went undefeated on the day, capturing individual titles: Heavyweight Josh Norman of Elm Street Middle School; Fairgrounds Middle School’s Brendan Kendall (110 pounds); Pennichuck Middle School’s Kevin Melanson (75); as well as Nashua Catholic Junior High teammates Joe Chimelski (136) and Marcel Laplante (97).

Earning third place bronze medals were Elm Street heavyweight Mike Small, Jordan Rowlette (77), Pennichuck’s Ryan Rice (80), and Nashua Catholic’s Connor Sullivan (115) – whose only loss was an 8-7 nail biter in the semifinals. SOCCER
Local trio lead team in Vegas
The cross border trio, Morgan Andrews (Milford), Amanda Gerlitz (Hollis) and Tori Sousa (Nashua) led the nationally-ranked (fifth according to gotsoccer.com) U17 FC Stars of Massachusetts. In Las Vegas the girls defeated two teams from Southern California, West Coast FC Premier and ISC Strikers Premier each by a score of 3-1. The Stars tied the Colorado Rush Nike 2-2.
As a result of their recent Las Vegas success the girls are the first team to have secured a Final Four spot in the league’s first National title event to be held in Seattle July 15-18.
Of note was Andrews’ 35-yard free kick that found the back of the net, Sousa’s exceptional shot to the top-right 90 that was met by an equally unimaginable save, and Gerlitz’ clearance of a ball headed toward an empty net after it found its way past the Stars’ keeper.
The Stars head to Region 1 Premier league play today.
