Sonics score one-point win over Cavaliers for Biddy title

The Sonics built an early lead and held off a furious Cavaliers rally for a thrilling 44-43 victory in the Boys Biddy championship game.

The Sonics avenged a loss to the Cavs from the last year’s title game. The Sonics were led by Christian Sullivan’s 17 points including going 6-for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter. Christian Brenner hit the deciding free throw with six seconds left and came up with several big rebounds late.

Tyler Vartabedian put in a strong defensive effort. The Cavaliers, who came in undefeated at 19-0, were led by Tim Preston with a game-high 23 points and had a chance to win the game but his floater at the buzzer bounced off the back of the rim. Chandler Doucette added eight points and Jordon Power six for the Cavs.

The Sonics, who finish with a record of 18-2, had a roster consisting of Robert Batsevich, Christian Brenner, Jordan Buckmire, Brian Inzerillo, Jacob Murphy, Jeremy Ouellette, Val Pagan, Alec Pressly, Michael Riley, Aaron Silva, Christian Sullivan, Patrick Sullivan and Tyler Vartabedian.

Merrimack girls win Londonderry event

The Merrimack PeeWee Girls All-Star Blue team finished 4-0 to win the Londonderry Basketball Tournament.

It was an all Merrimack final as the Blue team beat the Merrimack PeeWee All-Star White team for the championship. Blue teamers Melanie Hopkins and Lauren Haggar and White teamers Courtney Schaub and Nicole Haney were named to the All-Tournament Team along with tourney MVP Jolie Jacoby of the Blue team.

Other members of the champion Blue team are: Elizabeth Croke, Abby Fay, Sam D’Amico, Sarah Wozniak, Elise Roy, Jenna Chambers, Hannah Fleckenstein, Nicole Giles, Rachel Beygleman, as well as coaches Mark Roy, Paul D’Amico and Chris Fay.
