At last weekend’s New England Middle School Wrestling Championships at Lowell (Mass.) High School, 11 Nashua wrestlers earned medals by placing in the top six of their respective 30-man brackets.

Qualifying wrestlers from Nashua Catholic Junior High, as well as the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua’s (BGCGN) public middle school teams all participated in the tourney under the BGCGN banner, facing the top finishers from Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Wrestlers qualified for the tournament by placing at the top of the New Hampshire state tourney the previous week.

The BGCGN squad qualified 19 wrestlers for the tourney, more than any other team in New Hampshire.

In the fifth-sixth grade division, Elm Street Middle School sixth grader John Sweeney (3-0) was Nashua’s sole New England champion, taking the top spot in the 105-pound weight class. Pennichuck’s Ryan Rice took fifth at 80 pounds, while Jordan Rowlette was sixth at 75. Cole Nickerson of Nashua Catholic also qualified for New Englands.

In the seventh-eighth grade division, Nashua Catholic’s Joe Chimelski (2-1) was the runner-up at 136 pounds. Nashua Catholic’s Marcel Laplante (4-1) took third at 98, as did Pennichuck’s Kevin Melanson at 70. The only losses for Chimelski, Laplante and Melanson were to the eventual New England champions in their weight classes. Elm Street’s Wilson Pellott placed fifth at 144, as did fellow Elm Streeter Josh Norman in the heavyweight division. Placing sixth in the 190-pound class was Mike Small of Elm Street. Connor

McBride was nearly knocked out of the tourney with a serious knee injury, but turned in a gutsy performance, continuing into the medal round and finishing sixth at 128. Nashua Catholic’s Evan Manns was wrestling well at 144 until he was sidelined with a broken collarbone.

Also qualifying for and competing in New Englands were Elm Street’s Cam Bennett, Chris Dube, Dan Breese and David Muite; Fairgrounds’ Zach Seppi; Nashua Catholic’s Connor Sullivan; and Brandon Levesque of Hudson.

Litchfield Tourney

Third grader Colin O’Connor and sixth grader Brendan Kendall earned first-place medals with undefeated days at last weekend’s Litchfield Youth Wrestling Tournament at Campbell High School. First grader Zack Rioux placed third in the event, as did sixth-grader Nick McPherson of Hollis. Ryan Jigargian, Isaiah Johnson, Ethan Michaud and Evan Manning of Hudson rounded out the BGCGN roster at the event.
