Wrestlers from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua’s (BGCGN) three public middle school wrestling teams and the Nashua Catholic Jr. High team squared off last weekend in the fourth annual Mark Thibault Memorial City Middle School Wrestling Championships, sponsored by BGCGN.

The Elm St. Middle School team captured the Thibault Cup, awarded annually to the first place team, racking up 110 team points.

“This was the closest Thibault tournament ever, and I’m proud of our team. They set this as a pre-season goal, and worked toward it all winter long,” Elm St. coach Herb Bennett said.

Pennichuck Middle School (101 points) was the runner up, edging out 2009 city champs Nashua Catholic (100) by a single point.

The Fairgounds Middle School squad was a close fourth with 90 points.

BGCGN places second

BGCGN’s Elementary School (K-fourth grade) squad placed second at the New Hampshire Elementary School Wrestling Championships last weekend.

The Salem Boys and Girls Club finished first with 140 points, followed by the Nashua squad with 124, while the Exeter Blue Hawks were third with 110.

The Nashua squad had six individual state champions. Jaiden Dupont (58 lbs.), Zack Rioux (61), Owen Duda (68), and Keegan Mills (78) in the first-second grade division, and Ryan Jigargian (58) and Aren Kennedy (113) in the third-fourth grade division.

Other BGCGN place winners included, in the first-second grade division, Drew Fleury (second, 44 lbs.), Patrick Melanson (second, 46 lbs.), Brody Mills (second, 55 lbs.), Isaac Colon (second 57 lbs.), Michael Zabriskie (second, 66 lbs.), Nathan Zalzal (second, 79 lbs.), whose only loss came to teammate and state champ Keegan Mills, and Jackson Knight (third, 95).

Runners up in the 3rd-4th grade division were Trevor Froburg (second, 63 lbs.) and Colin O’Connor (second, 61 lbs.).
