At last weekend’s New Hampshire Middle School Wrestling Championships at Goffstown High School, six Nashua wrestlers earned individual state titles.

Wrestlers who finished in the top four places in the previous week’s regional tournaments in Londonderry and Exeter qualified for the “Granite Class” in the event, while those who didn’t place at the regionals competed in the “Slate Class” tournament. Qualifying wrestlers from Nashua Catholic Junior High and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua’s public middle school teams all participated in the tourney.

In the fifth-sixth grade division, John Sweeney of BGCGN’s Elm Street Middle School squad was the champion in the 105-pound weight class, while Ryan Rice of BGCGN’s Pennichuck team was the champ at 75. In the seventh-eighth grade division, Pennichuck’s Kevin Melanson took the 70-pound title, while Nashua Catholic’s Marcel Laplante and Joe Chimelski were the state champs at 95 and 135, respectively. Elm Street Middle School’s Josh Norman was tops at 235.

The Nashua Catholic team placed third in the team scoring. In addition to Laplante and Chimelski, Levi Gosselin (fifth-sixth grade, 95 pounds) and Connor Sullivan (seventh-eighth grade, 115) placed second in their weight classes. Evan Manns (140, seventh-eighth grade) earned a bronze medal, as did Cole Nickerson in the fifth-sixth grade 75-pound weight class. Nickerson’s only loss came in a tough overtime match with Rice. Seventh grader Ryan Sczygielski earned the fourth-place copper medal at 90. Peter Daniels, Brandon Dougherty, Jakob Rupp, Dylan Brown and Nigel Lyskawa also competed in the Granite Class. Jon Mercurio and Tommy Allard placed in the Slate Class.

Six grapplers from BGCGN’s Elm St. team placed at the event. In the fifth-sixth grade division, in adddition to Sweeney’s title, David Muite was the runner up at 90. In the seventh-eighth grade division, Chris Dube was the runner up at 160, while Dean Kennedy and Mike Small earned fourth place at 112 and 190, respectively. Brian Toupin and Dan Breese also competed in the Granite Class.

In addition to Rice and Melanson, Connor McBride and Dylan Fitzgerald of BGCGN’s Pennichuck squad finished third at 130 and 115, respectively, in the seventh-eighth grade division. In the fifth-sixth grade division, Ricky Giles was fourth at 140, Ethan Kim, Riley Bower, Jacob Michaud, and Bailey Dietrich all placed in the Slate Class.

Zack Seppi of BGCGN’s Fairgounds Middle School team placed third in the seventh-eighth grade division at 120, while Jake Valeri was third at 90.

Dakota Lane, Brendan Kendall, Patrick Roy, Johnny Flynn and Tyler Bergeron also wrestled in the Granite Class. Kevin Smith, Justin Mercer and Chris Olsen all placed in the Slate Class.

Finally, Brandon Levesque, Nick Helwig and Evan Manning of Hudson, Nick McPhearson of Hollis, Jordan Rowlette and Justin Carrier all represented BGCGN’s non-middle school-affilated team. Levesque placed second in the seventh-eighth grade Granite Class at 114.
