Crotched Jr. team hosts season’s first race

The Crotched Mountain Junior Race Team hosted their first home ski meet of the season, the John Eneguess Memorial Race, on Dec. 27 with over 215 racers from all over New England, competing in a giant slalom race. The fourth annual ski race was named for Peterborough’s World Cup Racer & 1980 Olympic skier, John Eneguess.

The Crotched Mountain team did very well earning 18 awards for placing in the top 10 with many more teammates in the top 20. John Eneguess’ brother, Sandy Eneguess, was on hand to present awards in his brother’s honor.

Despite rain, the course held up well for the event, which is a testament to the mountains great snowmaking and grooming ability. Athletes had to contend with rain and fog but that didn’t slow down the overall times which were generally impressive.

The Girl’s J4 division (11-12 years olds) Crotched Mountain swept the top five places with Jammie Mascitti leading the way with two impressive runs for a combined time of 1:25.40. Amherst’s Anna Farrow placed second with a combined time of 1:28.25, while Jessie Mascitti finished third (1:28.55), Mont Vernon’s Rhiannon Allison took fourth (1:29.79) and Amherst’s Alana Barretto placed fifth (1:30.38) to finish off a top five finish for the strong Crotched Mountain girl’s squad.

Also competing in the J4 race were Amherst’s Rhiannon King in 18th, Amherst’s Kate Bermingham, who tied for 25th in her first ski race with Hudson’s Amber Lee Carroll.

In the Boy’s J4 division, top local award went to R.J. Humphreys of Lyndeborough with a combined time of 1:28.31 for seventh place. The Mont Vernon duo of Collin Titus (eighth, 1:34.33) and Cameron Robertson (10th, 1:36.76). Kyle Grant-Neary from Wilton placed 12th, Vincent Dorow of Bedford placed 16th and teammate Micah Wagman of Amherst placed 17th.

The Girl’s J5 team (ages 8-10) picked up four more awards with Ashley Humphreys of Lyndeborough earning a second place trophy with a time of 1:34.23 after an impressive second run.

Nashua’s Erika Wentz earned a seventh-place medal with a time of 1:43.52, while Bedford’s Kaitlyn Laurendeau had a time of 1:44.82 to pick up eighth.

Coach Ray Humphreys’ J5 Boys continued a strong Crotched Mountain performance with Bryce Laurendeau of Bedford picking up a third place trophy after two strong runs for a combined time of 1:28.84. Luke Martin of Hollis earned a 10th place medal (1:34.13).

Jack Ede of Amherst placed 22nd in his first J5 race.

Laura Costes of Bedford lead the way in the Girl’s J3 race (13-14 year olds) by earning a 10th-place medal with a time of 1:33.67. The Wilton duo of Maggie Zavgren and Madison Grant-Neary finished 20th and 21st, respectively. Former teammate Brody Johnson of Amherst placed 22nd.

The Boy’s J3 race, Joe Dorow from Bedford earned a ninth-place medal with a combined time of 1:26.67. The Amherst duo of Trevor Brown (11th, 1:28.47) and Nathan Wagman (19th, 1:44.14) also had strong days.

In the Boy’s J6 race (7 and under) Amherst’s Andrew Taylor won his first ski race with a combined time of 2:12.76.

The Crotched Mountain Race Team will host the Buddy Warner Qualifier race on Feb. 7.
