The first Friday of the local high school sports season is in the books.
Sure, no football yet, but there were some big moments, including defending Division II field hockey champion Souhegan opening up with a bang, and the Alvirne girls soccer team getting a win right off the bat – a far cry from a year ago when it took almost two months to do that.
Here’s a look:
GIRLS SOCCER
PINKERTON 8, NASHUA NORTH 0
The Titans had a tough time handling the Astros scoring punch, keeping goaltender Kathleen Schreiner played well in goal despite being under duress for a good portion of the contest.
North hosts Hanover at Stellos Stadium on Monday.
ALVIRNE 2, CONCORD 1
Avery Newton and Celia Fain both scored to give the Broncos the win as Fain and Cassie Adams were solid in midfield.
The Alvirne defense also played well in front of keeper Samara Bryant (six saves). The Broncos visit Pinkerton on Tuesday.
MERRIMACK 1, DOVER 1
The Tomahawks got a goal by freshman Ella Bruner to tie the game, with assists from Ale Martin and Faith Sullivan.
Merrimack’s pressure in the midfield by Sarah Ganley, Lyla Carls, and Natalie Delmer was also a factor. Reece Berthiaume had seven saves for the ‘Hawks, who are at Manchester Central-West Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Gill Stadium.

FIELD HOCKEY
SOUHEGAN 8, ST. THOMAS 0
The Sabers certainly started the season off in fine fashion as Ella Russell, Ori Dart and Eme Godin had two goals apiece – both of Dart’s goals coming on penalty strokes.
Avery Wyborney and Ella Duclos each had a goal. Lorelei Hilton and Mariellah Dart each had assists. Oliva Harrison was in net for the shutout.
Souhegan plays its first of four Division I crossover games at Pinkerton on Monday.
