NASHUA – It’s shaping up to be quite a battle in the New Hampshire Decathlon-Heptathlon in today’s final day.

Right now Phillips Exeter’s Dana Mussulman has the lead in the Decathlon with 3,232 points, but Nashua North’s Gavin Suchecki isn’t far behind, next at 3,037. Suchecki is ahead in second of Keene’s Wayne Crowell (3032) who is in third.

In the Heptathlon, defending champion Angela Cenesca is poised to repeat but faces some challengers, including Nashua South’s Emma Millette. Cenesca is first at 2,331 points, followed by Coe-Brown’s Bristol Shirland (2,248) and the top local, Nashua South’s Emma Millette (2,212). Profile’s Isabel Lawton (fourth, 2,124) and White Mountains’ Olivia Lorenz is fifth at 1,997.

There is one more local in the top 10, Bishop Guertin’s Bridget Powers (ninth, 1,945).

DECATHLON

There’s five locals in the top 10. Merrimack’s Austin Cassetty (3002) is fourth, while Nashua South’s Preston Bois is sixth (2,939), just ahead of Alvirne’s Joey Marcotte (seventh, 2,2924. Nashua North’s Mason Dandeneau rounds out the top 10 (2, 776).

Mussulman was third in the 100 in 11.68 seconds, was third in the long jump (5.92 meters), ninth in both the shot put and high jump (12.59 meters, 1.73 meters, respectively) but got a lot of points with a win in the 400 meters (51.71).

Suchecki didn’t win any events but finished high enough for points. He was fourth in the 100 (11.73), 14th in the long jump (5.53), 23rd in the shot put (10.32) but then grabbed third in the high jump (1.78) and was second, just behind Mussulman in the 400 (51.88 seconds).

Crowell was third in both the high jump and 400 and fifth in the long jump. He took ninth in the 100 but was 31st in the shot put.

Cassetty used two second place finishes in the 100 and long jump (11.56, 5.97 meters) to get in contention. He was hurt by a 45th in the shot put. He was ninth in the high jump and 400.

The Panthers’ Bois, meanwhile, won two events: He took the long jump at 6.03 meters and the high jump at 1.83 meters. He was 28th in the 100, 42nd in the shot put and 17th in the 400, pushing him down to sixth. Marcotte had sixths in the 100 and long jump and was fourth in the 400 (52.20).

North’s Dandeneau got a spot as high as 10th thanks to his win in the 100 in 11.56 seconds and a fourth in the long jump (5.80 meters)

Bishop Guertin’s Liam Ireland is 11th (2,764), keyed by a fifth in the 400.

The shot put was obviously the toughest event for those who don’t compete in it during the season, but those who did thrived. Nashua South’s Kayedn Doubleday won’t at 14.28, followed by Alvirne’s Charles Barrett in second (13.66

HEPTATHLON

Cenesca had a great first day, capped off by a first in the 200 meter dash in 26.26 seconds. She was second in the 100 hurdles (16.50 seconds), sixth in the high jump (1.42 meters) and 12th in the shot put (7.51 meters).

Shirland’s strength was a first in the 100 hurdles (15.51 seconds), and sixth in the high jump (1.42 meters). She was 16th in the shot put and 11th in the 200.

The Panthers’ Millette had four top 10 finishes. She was fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.04), sixth in the high jump (1.42 meters), third in the shot put (8.75) and eighth in the 200 (27.91).

Powers’ best finish was seventh in the 100 hurdles.

REMAINING EVENTS

Decathlon – The boys have five events left today: the 110 hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, javelin, and the 1500 meters will wrap it up.

Heptathlon – For the girls, there’s three: the long jump, javelin, and the finale will be the 800 meter run. That’s the event Cenesca used to gain last year’s win.
