NASHUA – Bishop Guertin has a new hockey coach – on the girls side.

The Cardinals announced they’ve hired Kevin Conway as their new girls varsity ice hockey coach, replacing Phil DeVita.

Conway has spent two decades with the Islanders Hockey Club and has a deep background in coaching hockey. He also spent three seasons as the head coach of the UMass-Lowell Women’s club hockey team (2021-2024). He also spent time at the Lawrence (Mass.) Eagle Tribune covering local and national hockey.

“We’re so fortunate to have someone of Kevin’s background step into this role,” Cards athletic director Ryan Brown said in a release. “He comes to BG with so much experience in the game and with his background in the women’s game that we could not be more excited to see what he can do with the continued development of our girls.

“His enthusiasm for the game and for this position has been evident since he first submitted his name and our players and parents should be looking forward to next season and his leadership.”

The Cards won state titles in 2021 and 2023, and reached the semifinals in 2024. DeVita coached the Cards to their second title and was an assistant on the first title team. But the last two seasons the program has struggled, missing the state tournament the past two seasons. BG was 3-15 this past year and DeVita stepped away at season’s end.

Most of the nucleus of those postseason teams has now graduated, and numbers were a struggle.

“I’m very excited by the opportunity to help re-establish Bishop Guertin as perennial state tournament participants and state championship contenders,” Conway said. “This is going to be a challenge, but as a program we are going to be up for it. I look forward to getting started this fall.”
