The spring sports season is winding down but today is a big day for Souhegan High School girls athletes.

First, at 3 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire University, Souhegan senior tennis player Callie Perrin will vie for the NHIAA singles championship with the tourney’s semis and finals.

At 5:30 p.m., the No. 2 Sabers girls lacrosse team will match up with No. 1 Portsmouth for the Division I lacrosse championship at Exeter’s Bill Ball Stadium. It’s a rematch of last year’s title game won by the Clippers.

Perrin, meanwhile, is the No. 1 seed and will take on Hanover’s Sarah Maestripieri in the semis. Derryfield’s Annie Lin and Bedford’s Alina Barascout play in the other semifinal. The finals will be held right after.

Perrin beat both WNC’s Hazel Brinzer and Lebanon’s Mariana Utell by 8-0 scores then Hollis Brookline’s Anna Heiplik in the quarterfinals 8-2 this past weekend.

There should be a big crowd in Exeter to see the Sabers and Clippers do battle. Souhegan (17-1) fell 11-5 waaaaaay back on April 20 in Amherst but has not lost since, winners of 15 straight. Portsmouth, meanwhile, is 18-0, and won last year’s title game 12-7. The Clippers will be seeking their third straight Division I crown after beating Bishop Guertin 12-7 in the 2024 title game. They move up to from Division II after winning five straight, interrupted only by the COVID-canceled season of 2020. Thus, they are playing in their ninth straight title game, and the only loss came against Bedford the year Portsmouth moved up to Division I in 2023.

Souhegan, meanwhile, last won the Division I title in 2017, beating Bedford 10-9. The Sabers also win it in 2003, beating the one Nashua, and again in 2008 over Londonderry. They lost to Nashua South in 2007, and then three straight times (2012-14) vs. Concord and then Pinkerton twice.

And, of course, this is a matchup of sister vs. sister, McKliney Sbordone vs. JoJo Kerrigan; Curro being their maiden names.

Souhegan’s defense has been a strength, and that’s what Sbordone is counting on, with confidence vs. the Clippers.

“I truly think we are the team that can beat them,” she said.
