They started the season in heavy sweats, ski caps and certainly not exactly ideal conditons.
That’s a rite of spring for local high school tennis players. But now we have true tennis weather, a perfect time to start the NHIAA boys and girls tennis tournaments.
It starts today for the local girls teams in Division I and II, although with first round byes only a couple will be playing thanks to others having first round byes.
The official pairings hadn’t been released as of this writing, but in Division I Nashua South, which grabbed the No.11 spot, will definitely be on the road. It could be Dover, somewhat more likely than Salem or Keene due to potential tiebreakers.
Bishop Guertin likely has a bye and will host a quarterfinal on Thursday after a stellar 12-2 season that likely will have the Cards as the third seed.
In Division II, no one had a better season
than defending champion Souhegan (14-0). The Sabers will wait for the prelims to be done to see who they host in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Hollis Brookline (9-5) should be the sixth seed, and take on possibly Pembroke (6-8) today indoors at Longfellow Tennis Club in Nashua. Alvirne (7-7) should finish as the No. 9 seed will travel to likely face No. 8 Bow. The 8-9 winner goes to face Souhegan on Thursday.
The boys tourney gets underway on Wednesday. The Nashua South boys also finished 11th at 5-9 and will be on the road, likely to face No. 6 Windham. Bishop Guertin at No. 8 (8-6) likely gets to host No. 9 Pinkerton, a team the Cards just beat this past Thursday.
Bedford is the top seed at 14-0; that we can say with certainty.
In Division II, Hollis Brooklne (12-2), with a bye to the quarters, hopes to return to the finals as the No. 2 seed behind the team it lost two twice, No. 1, 14-0 Goffstown. Merrimack (9-5) also may get a bye (top six in a 10-team tourney with two prelims) while Souhegan (5-8) got the 10th and final spot, headed likely to face No. 7 Plymouth while Milford, which revived its program two years ago and now is in its third year back, hosts Oyster River (7-6).
These are all unofficial, but this is how it may look for today. Check with the NHIAA website as the pairing should be out today.
