NASHUA – And a freshman shall lead them?

You certainly could make a case for that Saturday at Stellos Stadium in the Bishop Guertn High School boys lacrosse 11-3 win over Xaverian Brothers of Westwood, Mass.

Let’s explain: Guertin had been in control for most of the interstate game until Xaverian’s Jake Fraga scored his second goal of the game to bring the visitors within two at 5-3 with 3:41 left in the third quarter.

The Cards had led 4-0 after the opening period but one goal over the course of early to quarters wasn’t going to cut it. Enter Roark, who won the ensuing faceoff cleanly and zipped downfield and firing a shot that Xaverian freshman goalie Cole Moore simply could not handle even though he was stellar with 16 saves on the day. That began a 6-0 BG run that sealed the deal, Guertin improving to 11-5 on the season.

“Hugh as a freshman is really the energy and almost heart and soul of our team,” Cards coach Brian Cameron said. “He made two clutch plays there …And I think the next play after that he got it to JP (Dunsmoor) and that led to a Sean McGarry fast break. Those are two big plays.

“Once we had enough possessions, and got the ball and got flowing, we were really good. We just needed the flow to go our way. He (Roark) has been incredible for us all year.”

McGarry scored on the goal Cameron referenced, his first of two during the streak, and Andre Steinbrueck tallied as BG took a 9-3 lead into the final period.

“Credit to (Guertin), that’s a great opponent, deep, strong, moved the ball really well,” Xaverian assistant and, for the day, acting head coach Ryan Quinn said. “Great faceoff guys, great goalie, great defense. They put it to us in the second half, something for us to build on.”

Meanwhile, injured Cardinal Cam Hayden, getting his feet went after missing time with a bad hamstring, got two goals in the final quarter and finished with a hat trick. He was limited, though, as the Cards didn’t want him to do much running but just take part in the offensive zone.

“It makes such a difference for our team to have Cam down there,” Cameron said. “He probably wanted to do a little more, but not to ride and let the game come to him. … He’s a humble superstar, as talented as it gets, and only wants the best for the team.”

Drew Redfern had three goals while Cooper Paquette added a goal for BG. The final score could have been worse if not or the play of Moore in XB’s net.

“He was really good,” Cameron said. “He was a different guy than we thought we would see, he stole a bunch and there were a lot of clean saves, too.”

Now BG has one more regular season week, hosting local rival Merrimack on Tuesday and then finishing next Thursday in a rematch at Exeter. The Cards played Massachusetts power B.C.High tough, and while Xaverian may be having a down year, playing them is something BG always circles on the calendar.

“We were really sitting on this game and excited, especially after B.C. High,” Cameron said. “They’re a really good team and we were in it, a play away against a team like that. Out-of-state games are really important to us, this was a big one.”
