Plenty of May days will be sports days, so here’s your guide

By Tom King - Staff Writer | May 4, 2026

May is here, everyone, and now the countdown to summer begins. We all know around here we go right from winter to summer anyway.

Locally, it will be the homestretch of the high school spring sports season, but even more significant, the opening of the Nashua Silver Knights season.

What’s different is it won’t feature any more Celtics or Bruins playoff games, but we do unfortunately get more Red Sox games and maybe more Patriots drama. So lets be your guide all the way through Memorial Day:

MONDAY, MAY 4

The high schools are back in action with a full slate, but try this one on for size: Hollis Brookline at Souhegan baseball. Both are Division II title contenders, the Sabers being defending champions and the Cavs not taking any prisoners, having outscored opponents 67-5 in the first five games. Yikes. Game time is 4:30 p.m. in Amherst.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 6

It’s time for The Battle of the Bridge, with the North-South boys and girls lacrosse double header at Stellos, the girls at 4 and the boys game at 6. South, going by what we see, is the favorite in both.

And at 4 p.m. Rivier University men’s lacrosse will be hosting Rhodes College of Memphis, Tenn., the champion of the Southern Athletic Association, in the first round of the Division III NCAA Tourney after edging Saint Joe’s of Maine 8-7 to win its second straight GNAC title.

FRIDAY, MAY 8

More Bridge Work – one of our favorites, the annual North-South baseball game at Holman Stadium at 7 p.m. There’s been some classics in the past, and you never know what to expect. Hopefully it’ll feel more like May than March.

MONDAY, MAY 11

A great girls-boys lacrosse doubleheader at Stellos Stadium. First, at 4, it will be contenders Souhegan vs. Nashua South, the Panthers 6-1 as of today, and the Sabers at 5-1 after pasting Pinkerton. These two should put on quite a show and could meet again in the Division I tourney.

Then, at 6 p.m., a possible Division I finals preview in boys lacrosse with Bishop Guertin hosting Pinkerton at 6 p.m. at Stellos Stadium. Usually every year lately there’s three challengers for BG – Bedford, Pinkerton and Exeter. Right now that looks like Pinkerton, but that can always change as Bedford goes into this having not lost in-state at 7-1 and beat Exeter 11-8.

TUESDAY, MAY 12

Softball time. There aren’t many title contenders right now locally, but one game that’s always fun is the Battle of the Bridge between North and South at Rivier University’s Raider Diamond at 7 p.m. It’s a great venue and great way to showcase both programs under the lights.

Also, for Red Sox fans, the Phillies are in town, the team run by old friend Dave Dombrowski and managed by…well, Don Mattingly. It might have been a big night for the return of Alex Cora, but no, he turned the job down this past week.

THURSDAY MAY 14-SUNDAY MAY 17

The PGA championship, golf’s second major on the calendar, will be at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa., a Philadelphia suburb. It’s the tourney’s first time at this course since 1962. Still not used to this tourney being played in August.

SATURDAY, MAY 16

The second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness will be held this day. Last year by choice we were robbed of a Triple Crown winner as Derby longshot champ Sovereignty’s handlers did not enter the horse in the Preakness. It’s not yet been decided whether exciting Derby winner Golden Tempo will race or not.

It’s also being held at Laurel Park, Md.instead Pimlico Race Course, which is undergoing a $400 million renovation.

THURSDAY, MAY 21

A good one at Stellos, Bishop Guertin vs. Souhegan in girls lacrosse. Remember, the Sabres ended the Cardinals season a year ago in the quarters in Amherst.

SATURDAY, MAY 23

Memorial Day Weekend will have arrived, believe it not. This will be the day of the last Bishop Guertin boys lacrosse out-of-state opponent game, and it should be a doozy at 1 p.m. at Stellos Stadium, vs. Xaverian Brothers of Westwood, Mass.

TUESDAY-FRIDAY MAY 26-29

Tennis anyone? These are the first few days of the NHIAA postseason, with boys and girls tennis prelims and quarterfinals (boys quarters Friday the 29th, girls on the 28th), all at homes of higher seeds. Souhegan will be looking to begin its girls title defense, while Hollis Brookline will be looking to get back to the boys finals. The Cavs have narrowed the gap vs. defending champ Goffstown, losing 5-4 last week.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 27

The Nashua Silver Knights begin their 2026 season, as the crawl that can be the off-season has basically flown by. They start with an Education Day game at 10:30 a.m. vs. the Vermont Lake Monsters. A big day as another season, the league and franchise’s 16th season. Incredible.

Also, it’s the first day of New England Patriot OTAs (organized team activity), which are basically practices. Embattled head coach Mike Vrabel is scheduled to speak that day.

FRIDAY MAY 29

More Silver Knights, with a twist. It’s the Opening Night for the newest FCBL franchise, the Lowell Spinners, and your Silver Knights will be the guests of honor. It should be quite a night in Lowell, the return of the Spinners and crowds at LeLacheur Park. Game time is 7 p.m.

SATURDAY, MAY 30

This should have been a banner day at Nashua High School South, with the hosting of the Division I and II boys and girls track meets. But nope. Nashua put their bid in and was set to grab it, but it was pulled because the organizers wanted to hold a couple of events on Friday. Egads! The nerve! Shaking our heads at the NHIAA Track Committee. Anyway, the dual division concept will take place at Londonderry. Have fun parking.

Oh, and it’s also the first night game, guess you could say the “hard” open for the Silver Knights at 6 p.m. Of course, hard to think of 2,500-3,000 schoolkids being a “soft” open the previous Wednesday.

If we all get this far, June awaits.
