THE GREAT INDOORS: It won’t feel like spring as high school practices begin

Today is a day a lot of local high school coaches have been waiting for since June.
Yes, it’s the first day of the local high school, uh, spring sports season.
But with the weather condiditions, that were forecasted to include some snow, it’s highly unlikely anyone has that “spring” feeling.
Or will be outside for any practices.
“Zach (Nashua North baseball coach Harris) and I were laughing that we’re not going to get outside until April 1,” South coach James Gaj said. “I was actually worried that we wouldn’t be outside until the first game. That’s happened before.”
But Nashua South baseball and at times North has had an alternative, as it has secured the new facility on Amherst Street that belongs to the youth team known as the Merrimack Valley Prospects. Gaj said the off-season workouts have been held there most of the winter to avoid conflicts with the winter sports teams at South. The team has used its fundraising account to rent the time, Gaj said.
“You know something if this is available, and you have to pay a little money to rent it, at the end of the day it’s better,” Gaj said. “It was better, we can get more done because we have more batting cages (at MV’s facility) than just the one. … It’s good for pitchers and hitting.”
South, Gaj said, is scheduled to work out at Stellos Stadium on Tuesday. Their own field isn’t ready. “It keeps freezing and thawing, freezing and thawing,” Gaj said.
The spring season consists of baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls outdoor track, and for Bishop Guertin, Souhegan and Hollis Brookline, boys volleyball.
Of note, Nashua North girls lacrosse will have a new coach this spring, Mark Seo, who has coached on the youth levels. Jen Dyer had taken leave last spring for personal reasons and Chad Zibolis, the North head football coach, took the team on an interim basis.
North had the same head coach last year for both boys and girls tennis – Andrew Dutton. However, Jothan Massey is listed as the girls coach and the boys coaching job recently was listed on the athletics website as “open.”
In any event, baseball, softball and lacrosse will open up the week of April 13, while tennis will start for most teams the previous week, along with track.
It won’t feel like spring, however, for the foreseeable future, so it’s likely the great indoors for some.
