MANCHESTER – They meet again today, and their last postseason meeting is likely still fresh in everyone’s mind.

A year ago, the Bishop Guertin and Concord High School boys hockey teams played a three-plus overtime classic Division I final, with Concord coming out on top, 2-1.

Now the Cards get another chance, as the teams meet at SNHU Arena at 5 p.m. for the whole bucket of ice. You can bet the opportunity to get some redemption has motivated those who returned for BG this year.

“Absolutely, they want to get back there,” Guertin coach Gary Bishop said. “They were hoping.”

The two programs have met seven previous times in the finals, with Concord holding a 5-2 edge. The No. 4, 15-5 Cards and No. 1 19-1 Crimson Tide played each other twice this season, with the Tide winning in Concord 4-3 on a late goal, and BG winning 4-2 at Skate 3 in Tyngsborough, Mass. That is Concord’s only blemish.

“We come out 2-0 down there, and they play hard, they were determined,” Walsh said. “That’s the best I’ve seen them play. Bish had had a couple of not-so-great games, and I told him, just tell your kids they’re playing Concord.”

Concord had the easier time in the semis Wednesday, blistering No. 4 Windham 6-0 while BG made it with a late 4-3 win over No. 10 Hanover on Gavin Santos’ goal with 1:20 left in regulation.

The strength for the Tide is their top line of Tyler Morin (hat trick vs. Windham), Chad LaRiviere and Nolan Walsh (four assists in semis).

“We’ve got to stop that top line,” Bishop said. “And we’ve got to put pressure on their goalie (sophomore Carter Heise). He’s a sophomore, our guy (Nico Scaparotti) is a sophomore, so you just have to throw everything you can at him and hope something goes in.”

Concord was so dominant in their semi that its top line didn’t see the ice in the final period, which was running time.

“It’ll be fun,” Bishop said. “He (Tide coach DuncanWalsh) plays three lines, we play three lines. As long as we can get one of our top two out against his top one, we’ll be OK.”
