BEARING DOWN: Cards know Hanover’s a semifinal threat

They vow not to look ahead.
The Bishop Guertin High School boys hockey team is dying to get back to the Division I finals after last year’s marathon three-plus overtime loss to Concord.
But first thing’s first: Beat No. 10 Hanover in tonight’s 7:30 Division I semifinal at Manchester’s JFK Coliseum.
It shouldn’t be that difficult to focus on the the 10-10 Bears since they handed BG a 6-4 loss at Campion Rink back in mid-January. And they knocked off No. 2 Trinity of Manchester 5-2 in the quarterfinals this past Saturday.
“Hanover’s pretty good,” BG coach Gary Bishop said. “We had a bad third period (outscored 3-0). They were a little more physical than us and at that stage in the season, some of our younger kids just didn’t handle it real well.
“They’re ready. It was a long bus ride home from Hanover. They remember that, and I remember that.”
Bishop feels that the Cards are a better team now than they were just over two months ago.
“We’ll be ready to go,” he said. “We’re playing a lot better now. We’re getting more people involved in the offense, which really helps. At the beginning of the year if O’Hearn (captain Jordan O’Hearn) didn’t score, nobody scored. Now all of a sudden, Dom’s (Trepanier) got a few goals. (Owen) Murphy has got seven or eight goals. Jack Stone has seven or eight goals….the team is coming along and the offense is starting to come into play.”
So while BG is better, is Hanover? The fact they’re in the semis says yes, even though they ended the regular season losing four of six. But they beat Londonderry 4-3 – they played the Lancers three straight times, two to end the regular season – and Trinity.
“Hanover always has skilled kids,” Bishop said. “They may not have that one guy that stands out, but they’ve got nine kids who can play and they do the right thing. … I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a fun game.”
In that game vs. BG, sophomore Rex Chanyl had a hat trick. It’s a very young Bears team with just three seniors, but one of them, Ronan Przydzielski, is one to watch out for.
“He’s not your typical Hanover kid,” Bishop said. “He’s rugged, he’s tough, he hits anything that moves. Most Hanover kids rely on skill. This kid relies on toughness and skill. I like him, good player.”
Bishop says “absolutely” his team is itching to get back to the finals. They’d love to see No. 1 Concord (18-1) beat No. 4 Windham (12-7) in the 5 p.m. semi, as Concord was the team that beat BG in the finals.
But no one is discounting Hanover, Bishop says.
“Our guys, no, they don’t look past anything,” Bishop said. “These kids know they have to work hard.”
