MANCHESTER — It was a tough day for a lot of local teams, including the Souhegan High School boys and girls basketball teams.
The Manchester West High School boys basketball team hit nine 3-pointers to pull away late for a 48-38 win over Souhegan in the Division II quarterfinals on Saturday.
And the Saber girls had a lead early in the fourth quarter at Derryfield but eventually saw their season end.
In the boys game, Max Houde (17 points) and Amara Freeman (15 points) each had four 3s for the Blue Knights (16-4), who advanced to the final four for the first time since 2016.
Weston Hickman led Souhegan (11-9) with 15 points, but no one else was in double figures. Matt Nowak added six points and Joe Mayo recorded five for the Sabers, who had won six of seven going into the game.
“I’m really proud of my guys,” Souhegan coach Peter Pierce said. “It was two (points) at halftime, it was two at the end of three, and we just ran out of gas. We didn’t shoot the ball well in the fourth quarter.
“We knew that we had to have great closeouts to beat them, and I thought for three quarters, we were fine. But once they hit a couple, it doesn’t take long to be down six or down nine.”

DIVISION II GIRLS QUARTERFINALS
DERRYFIELD 37, SOUHEGAN 32
The Sabers had a two-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but faltered offensively down the stretch in a loss Saturday to Derryfield in the Division II quarterfinals.
Nayaa Dineshkumar led the Sabers (14-6) with nine points and 14 rebounds and Zofia Rosenfield had eight points and six boards, as Souhegan led throughout the first half.
But after the Sabers took a 29-27 lead with just under seven minutes remaining, the Cougars (17-2) outscored them 10-3 the rest of the way to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal.
“This game as going to come down to who executed better,” Souhegan coach Greg Cotreau said. “We have a very similar makeup. They made a couple more layups and a couple more free throws. I thought the girls played awesome.”
