TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. – The Dom took care of all family business on Saturday.

Bishop Guertin boys hockey business, that is.

Trepanier scored two goals, including the go-ahead tally, as the No. 3 Cardinals skated past No. 6 Keene 4-1 in the Division I quarterfinals at Skate 3 Arena.

It wasn’t exactly a skate in the park for the Cards, who trailed 1-0 early and were looking at a 1-1 game after two. But three third period goals did the trick, two by Trepanier.

“He’s a great player for us,” Guertin coach Gary Bishop said. “He does everything. He’s on the power play, he kills penalties, he’s so unassuming. He moves the puck well, and he’s got a great shot. We’re yelling at him all the time, ‘Shoot, shoot, shoot.’ He likes to make plays. I’d rather he shoot.”

Now the Cards (14-5) will head back to the semis Wednesday at Manchester’s JFK Coliseum against No. 10 Hanover, a 5-2 upset winner over No. 2 Trinity.

Ironically, Guertin thought it had the lead about 20 seconds before Trepanier’s go-ahead goal but the puck had been kicked in. Then at 1:37 Trepanier had a clean look at Keene goalie Nick Fortier (24 saves) and connected for a 2-1 BG lead.

“It was a 1-1 game right there and that could’ve been make it or break it,” Trepanier said. “We had that one called back on us, but I got the puck in the middle of the zone, got a good shot on net and snuck it in five-hole,” Trepanier said, his goal assisted by Anthony Dobrutchi.

He added another on the power play eight minutes later, as things were getting tight, assisted by Gavin Santos and Owen Murphy. Cam Auger got an empty netter with 25.6 seconds left, assisted by goalie Nico Scaparotti. Another goal was disallowed with a skate in the crease.

But the Cards responded.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Guertin coach Gary Bishop said. “You fold or you rise to the occasion.”

“I don’t know when the last time BG started flipping the puck out, I haven’t seen that in a while,” Keene coach Chris Mcintosh said. “Our boys played really really well. I don’t think we could be any more proud of them for the effort they gave. It’s the game of hockey, unfortunately.”

Then there was Scaparotti. He had 27 saves, but two huge ones, robbing the Blackbirds’ Zade Trybulski in the second period on a shorthanded breakaway, and also turning around to slap away a deflected puck that almost certainly would have landed in the net shortly after.

“Normally that (breakaway) goes in for us,” Mcintosh said.

“He came up real big,” Bishop said. “It was going in the net. He’s been great for us all year. The first goal had nothing to do with him. My two defenseman got confused.”

That came off a turnover, scored by Tribulski with the assist from Griffin Erickson, just 49 seconds in.

Bishop knew things would be tough, despite a 5-2 road win over the ‘Birds (11-8) earlier in the season.

“They played us real tough,” Bishop said. “They’re big, they’re strong, they’ve got two real strong freshmen (Tribulski and Erickson).”

And now it’s on to the semis, with the mission to return to the finals after last year’s heartbreaking three-plus OT loss to Concord.

“It feels great,” Trepanier said. “It was hard last year, hopefully we can get back there again this year.”
