HS Tourney Roundup: Sabers move on, Merrimack ousted
Two local boys basketball teams were on the road on Wednesday night in postseason play, and, well, one out of two isn’t bad.
Souhegan picked up a big win at Kingswood in the Division II prelims, while Merrimack wasn’t as fortunate at Bedford in the Division I first round.
Here’s a look:
DIVISION II PRELIMS
NO. 11 SOUHEGAN, 64, NO. 6 KINGSWOOD 42
The Sabers improved to 11-8, avenging a recent one-point loss, and advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals thanks to 18 points apiece by Wes Hickman and Joe Mayo. Mayo’s points came on six 3-pointers, five in the first half after which the Sabers led 34-20.
Evan Bernasconi added 11 for the Sabers, who will be at Manchester West on Saturday in the Division II quarterfinals.
DIVISON I PRELIMS
NO. 2 BEDFORD 74, NO. 14 MERRIMACK 42
The Tomahawks were a tough team all season, but offensively they just couldn’t match what the Bulldogs were able to do on Wednesday night.
Merrimack’s season ends at 7-12 while 16-2 Bedford hopes to avenge an earlier loss to Nashua South on Saturday in the quarterfinals in Bedford.
