THE FAB FIVE: Byrne, Kearns, Kaler, Critchfield, Juvera win MOC titles

You want to see high school wrestling success? Then come to the Greater Nashua area.
There were plenty of local state champions — five in all – at the Meet of Champions Saturday at Pinkerton Academy.
Taking the top spot at the podiums were Nashua South’s Benny Byrne at 157, Bishop Guertin heavyweight Bishop Kearns, Souhegan’s Jack Kaler at 132, Milford’s Francisco Juvera at 138, and Hollis Brookline’s Jacob Critchfield at 165.
Byrne had a great day. In addition to pinning Keene’s Jacob Hamm in the finals, he won the New (Hampshire Wrestling Officials Association (NHOWA) Sportsmanship Award, as well as the Perruccio Scholarship Award, also from the NHOWA, worth $2,000.
His other wins were over Campbell’s Sage Anctil in the semis (15-0 tech fall) and Milford’s Phillip Wright via pin in the quarters.
Kearns won all three of his matches, topping Concord’s Wayne Gutierrez-Sakakeeny via a 19-3 technical fall, then he had a 20-3 tech fall vs.Spaulding’s Wesley Chesser in the semis. Then in the finals he pinned Pinkerton’s James Caruso.
Critchfield topped Timberlane’s Jason O’Brien in a 16-1 technical fall for the title. He beat Portsmouth’s Stephen Whisler in the semis in a 16-7 major decision and Goffstown’s Sullivan Conley in the quarters via 19-3 tech fall.
Juvera beat Keene’s Ian Spencer 13-10 in the finals, while topping BG’s James Algeo in the semis in a 12-7 decision. He pinned Plymouth’s Kody Sawyer in the quarters and Windham’s Liam McGrail 16-1 in the Round of 16.

Kaler was one of three Sabers to reach finals, but the only champion as he beat Londonderry’s Gabriel Perez in a 13-8 decision. He squeaked by Winnisquam’s Dylan Griffin 4-1 in the semis but beat rival Milford’s Cam Stickney via a 17-2 tech fall in the quarters.
Elsewhere for the Sabers, Chase Knuckles fell to Keene’s Leo Runez in the 144 finals 18-11 but won his other three matches; Gabe Holt was second at 215, bowing to Timberlane’s Kyle Linblad in the finals via 16-1 tech fall after winning three times. Finally, Patrick Casey took sixth at 165.
Besides Kearns for the Cards, Austin Steinruck took third at 132 while James Algeo was fourth at 138.
Nashua North’s Sebastian Ochoa was fifth at 126
Alvirne’s Mason Verrocchio finished third at 106, as did Quintin Tetreault at 190. Campbell’s Sage Anctil was third at 157. Sam Baker was sixth at 126.
Hollis Brookline’s Victor Lomme took fifth at 120. Merrimack’s Cash Torres was sixth at 157.

Milford had three place out the 11 it sent. Besides Juvera’s title, Max Hammerstrom was second at 126, falling to Timberlane’s Scott Patti in a 7-0 finals decision; Colton Schuster was fourth at 113 as was Phillip Wright at 157.
