HS ROUNDUP: Big hoop wins for BG, Alvirne; South takes early Bridge lead

The Bishop Guertin High School boys basketball team has been looking for that big win to boost its confidence.
On Monday, they got it, rallying from 13 down to beat Pinkerton at the Hackler Gym.
“The kids just stayed together and really played great defense in the last two minutes,” Cards coach Will Horne said.
Also, Nashua South grabbed two indoor track wins over rival North to take an early Battle of the Bridge lead. Plus back to boys hoop as Alvirne got a big win at home over Salem.
Here’s the rundown:
BOYS BASKETBALL
BISHOP GUERTIN 78, PINKERTON 75
Luca Fabrizio scored four big points in the final minute while Connor McGowan, who had 17 points, had a game sealing steal at halfcourt with BG (4-3) up one and laid it in at the buzzer.
Meanwhile, Eli Yousseff had a big night with 24 points. “Eli had a monster knight getting to the rim and finishing,” Horne said.
Sam Woodward had 14 points and Josh Corriveau 12 for BG which held the Astros (6-2) to just nine points in the fourth quarter.
The Cards overcame big scoring nights by Wilson Yousseff (34 points, no relation to Eli) and 27 by Brady Sullivan.
BG next hosts Dover on Friday.
ALVIRNE 76, SALEM 65
The Broncos put together a 30-point fourth quarter after the game was tied at 46 to improve to 4-2 with four players in double figures. Garrett Hall had 18 of his team high 22 points in the fourth. Ulysses had 20 points, Sean Chipfunde 15 and Luke Norse added 11.
Alvirne is at Londonderry on Friday. The Lancers are in the area tonight vs. Nashua South.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
CAMPBELL 46, HILLSBORO-DEERING 28
The Cougars picked up their second straight win after starting the season 0-5 with their defensive pressure plus 11 points from Kenzie Ripley and 1- by Katie Fluet. Zoe Bourque added nine while Mkayla Swanson, Amelia LaPlante, Kate Silver and Maggie Izbicki also scored.
Campbell is at St. Thomas tonight.
BOYS HOCKEY
The Knights’ tough start continues as they fell to 0-6, while the host Astros improved to 5-1.
Conor Prunior led Nashua at Tri Towne Arena with two goals while Brendan Skelley and Brendon Doughty each added a goal and an assist. Gavin Asimakopulos added an assist. Tony Venizia had 41 saves for the Knights, who host Merrimack-Hollis Brookline-Derryfield on Saturday at Conway Arena.
BOYS & GIRLS TRACK
SOUTH TAKES TWO VS. NORTH IN BATTLE OF THE BRIDGE
The Panthers earned two wins over the Titans in a multi-team meet to take a 2-0 lead in the winter Battle of the Bridge that is spread over the next few weeks.
The Panther boys finished third with 65 points at UNH, behind Londonderry (83) nd Pinkerton (96). North was sixth with 14 points. In between, Merrimack was fourth (57) and Hollis Brookline sixth (27).
In the girls meet, South was a distant second (84) to Pinkerton (143), while North was tied for third with Londonderry with 48 points.Merrimack (24) was fifth and Hollis Brookline (12) sixth.
In the boys meet, South’s keys were a win by Preston Bois in the 55 hurdles (8.36 seconds), a first by Ryan Jansen in the 300 (37.6). Bois was second in the long jump.
Matthew Motherway took third in the 1000. South’s foursome of Sergio Lopez, Damien Rodrigues, Isaiah Rodriguez and Jansen took second in the 4×400.
North had a quiet meet, with Jose Marcono and Dominick Coffie second-third in the shot put.
Other local winners were Merrimack’s Ordan Sugiant, first in the 600 in 1:32.89, and Austin Cassetty, first in the long jump in 19-9.50. HB’s Thomas Howie and William Scott were three-four in the 1500. HB was third in the 4×160 relay and 4×400 relays.
For the girls, South’s Ariana Marengo took the 600 in 1:48.07. South’s Camrin Ayi and Diamond Perry were two-three in the 300. South’s 4×400 relay team of Marengo, Emma Millette, Pearl Nelson and Sarah Witta were second. Panther Amalie Ramirez was second in the long jump.
North’s Rosalie Neveu captured the 300 in 44.60 plus the 1000 in 3:10.39. Allie Dandeneau was first in the long jump in 15:10.75 and second in the 55 dash, as was Abigail Azevedo in the high jump.
Hollis Brookline’s Madelyn Sinclair won the shot put at 33-3.50
GYMNASTICS
NORTH, SOUTH GYMNASTS DO WE
The Titans improved on their team score from an earlier meet by two points (106.750) despite just five competing at Gymnastics Village on Sunday.
The Titans were led by freshman all-around Abby bozek, who was fourth at 32.850 with season highs on beam (9.1) and floor (9.05).
Junior Ashlynn Hall had a season high on vault at 8.65; Titan senior Lynnlee Davis had her best meet of the season with highs on beam and floor. Freshman Aubry Hobart and Lily Houston also performed well.
South, meanwhile, had two seniors compete as independents: Abbey Herbert had a season high score on bars while Binita Rana had a season high all-around with high scores on bar, beam and floor.
