Holiday Roundup: Knights, Admirals get wins in Backyard Brawl

We had the holiday basketball tournament in Nashua over the weekend, and Monday it was hockey’s turn.

It was Day 1 of the The Backyard Brawl tournament at Conway Arena on Monday with great results for the Nashua North-South Knights and the Alvirne-Milford Admirals. Here’s a look:

BOYS HOCKEY

CONWAY ARENA BACKYARD BRAWL

NASHUA NORTH-SOUTH 5, MERRIMACK-HOLLIS BROOKLINE-DERRYFIELD 2

The Knights got two four-point efforts: a hat trick and an assist from captain Brendon Doughty, plus two goals and two assists by Conor Prunier.

Brendan Skelley had two assists, while Braedyn Thyne had an assist. Tony Venezia had 16 saves for the winners.

MHBDS got goals by Tyler Allen and Colin Hamlin, with assists going to Will Farrell and Bryson Smith. WarHawks goalie Jonny Turner had 30 saves.

It was a three-point game for the Knights, who won both halves 2-0 and 3-2 for a point each, plus a point for the overall win.

“We played a complete hockey game start to finish,” Knights co-coach Jordan Sarracco said. “Got pucks deep, put the pressure on and capitalized on opportunities. … It was the best defensive zone game of the year.”

ALVIRNE-MILFORD 8, TIMBERLANE-PELHAM 1

The Admirals also had a three-point game, leading 3-0 after the first half and enjoyed a 5-1 second half.

The Admirals got a hat trick by Brandon Hiltz, a goal by Brandon Callahan, a goal and three assists by Luke Green, a goal and assist from Chris Bozza, a goal by Brandon Ganas and a goal by Riley McCarthy.

Other assists went to Wyatt Pepin (two), Jameson Thurrott, and Evan Pargias.

Mason Komarek had 24 saves for the winners.

“In the second half they really picked it up,” Admirals coach Kathryn Griswold said. “This is a team that’s had four coaches over the past three years, there’s some heavy lifting to do, some culture change going on, I’m really proud of the progress they’ve made.”

Justin Keough got the lone goal for Timberlane-Pelham.

TODAY’S SCHEDULE: Nashua North-South vs. Timberlane-Pelham, 1:40 p.m.; Alvirne-Milford vs. MHBDS, 3:20 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

MIKE LEE BASH POSTPONED

Souhegan’s semifinal vs. Belmont, originally slated for Monday was postponed as the entire tourney schedule for yesterday was wiped out by the ice storm/unsafe driving conditions.

The semifinals will be today, with the finals now on Wednesday at noon.
