NASHUA – The snow and ice has covered the area. Temperatures are in the 20s at best.

That should get everyone in the mood for high school basketball, and there’ll be plenty of it Saturday at both Nashua High School North and South large and medium gyms.

It’s the annual Nashua Girls Basketball Preseason Jamboree, featuring 20 teams playing between the two locations, starting at 9 a.m.and ending at approximaely 3 p.m.

At Nashua North will be Nashua North, Goffstown, Timberlane, Winnacunnet, Keene, Hollis Brookline, Souhegan, Oyster River, ConVal and Bow.

At Nashua South the teams playing will be South, Pinkerton, Exeter, Alvirne, Merrimack, Trinity, Manchester Memorial, Concord, Milford, and Campbell.

Each team will play three games, and concession stands will be open at both locations. There is a $5 admission fee for spectators, free for youths under 10.

“It’s an awesome day for girls basketball in Nashua,” South coach John Bourgeois said. “Bringing in 20 teams from around the state gives the kids a chance to compete, the coaches a first look at their groups, and the community an early preview of what’s ahead.

“The energy is always great and we love hosting something that celebrates the game and the players who put so much into it.”

The games will consist of two 18-minute halves, with a two-minute halftime break. The clock will be running, stopping only for free throws, injuries, or timeouts (each team gets two 30 second time outs for the whole game).

There will be no overtime, games will end in ties if that’s the score after regulation.

Games will be going on simultaneously at the large gyms, while the medium gyms will also be used. The full day schedules are posted with this story.

The Jamboree wraps up the first week of the preseason that included tryouts and then full practices, interrupted only by Tuesday’s snowstorm.

Teams have more scrimmages the first part of next week, and the regular season opens next Friday, Dec. 12. In Division I, North hosts Pinkerton, South is at Goffstown, Merrimack is at Keene, and Alvirne hosts Manchester Memorial.

In Division II Hollis Brookline is at Oyster River while Souhegan is at Laconia. Milford does not open until Dec.19.

Campbell in Division III hosts Fall Mountain next Friday.

WILTON-LYNDEBOROUGH OPENS SATURDAY

Meanwhile, there is regular season high school basketball beginning in Divsion IV. The Wilton-Lyndeborough boys and girls are at Epping, the girls at 5:30 and the boys at 7.

The Warrior girls will be paced by senior guard Maddy Labrecque, senior guard- forward Cailin Swett, junior Dann Stratton and McKenna Crouse.

“We’re looking to bounce back to competitiveness after a tough year last season,” WLC coach Tom Crowley said.
