In recent years most local high school football teams have been able to avoid the playoff upset, but not this year.

The victim? The Campell Cougars. Meanwhile, the Souhegan Sabers were just the opposite, winning decisively in their playoff opener.

Here’s a look:

DIVISION III QUARTERFINALS

NO. 6 INTER-LAKES/MOULTONBOROUGH 19, CAMPBELL 16

The Cougars fell behind 19-0 at the half and couldn’t recover, despite rallying.

ILM QB Kieran Donnelly had a 67-yard TD pass to Jackson Downs, while O’Brien Murray and Donnelly ran for TDs. Downs had an interception in the first half, and drew a pass interfernce penalty that set up a TD.

The defending champion Cougars end their season at 6-3, while ILM (5-4) moves on to face No. 2 Laconia in the semis next Saturday.

DIVISION II QUARTERFINALS

NO. 1 SOUHEGAN 47, NO. 8 ST. THOMAS 20

The 10-0 Sabers rolled, leading 41-0 at the half. Quarterback Michael Fiengo had five total TDs, tossing three scoring passes while rushng for two more.

Ryland Raudelunas had two TDs, rushing and receiving, while defensively Cole Brandt had an interception and fumble recovery.

Souhegan now will host No. 4 Pelham, which edged No. 5 Manchester West 7-6, next weekend.

What’s the focus moving forward for the defending champions?

“Go 1-0 next week against a very good Pelham team,” Souhegan coach Robin Bowkett said. “Make this the best week and enjoy every bit of it.”
