We’re closing out the regular season with a bang on the local high school football circuit.
Tonight and Saturday there are four of the five games that have postseason implications, so sit back and enjoy the ride:
TONIGHT
NASHUA SOUTH (5-2 Division I, 6-2 overall) at PINKERTON (6-1 Division I, 6-2 overall)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Pinkerton’s Alumni Field.
LAST WEEK: Nashua South 51,Merrimack 16; Manchester Memorial 28, Pinkerton 24.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: A fantastic matchup, and the key will be the Panthers’ ability to stop the Pinkerton running game led by Joseph Osanya plus the passing of Aiden McDonald. South showed its depth at Merrimack in winning without back Sam Levine and receiver/safety Josh Tripp.
The Astros can clinch the Central title with a win, so there’ll be tons of motivation.
THE PICK: South 28, Pinkerton 27. Gusty wind pushes away tying PAT attempt by Astros with no time left.
ALVIRNE (3-5) AT MERRIMACK (4-3)
WHEN: 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: MHS Student Memorial Field
LAST WEEK: Alvirne 28, Dover 21; Nashua South 51, Merrimack 16.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: The Tomahawks want a win to cement their playoff status. The Broncos want a win to get in, forget about status. Alvirne has to stop the potent Tomahawks aerial attack led b QB Maverick Torres; Merrimack has to stop the Broncos combo of Ethan Dudlay-Mike Landmesser. Great matchup.
THE PICK: Merrimack 35, Alvirne 21. ‘Hawks intent on recovering from South game.
BISHOP GUERTIN (5-2 Division I, 6-2 overall) at WINNACUNNET (5-2 Division I, 6-2 overall).
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Winnacunnet HS.
LAST WEEK: Salem 37, Winnacunnet 35.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: The Warriors are paced offensively in part by the rushing of Dom Mancini (172 yards rushing vs Salem) and Harvey Reynoso-Santana. QB Sean Griffin likely won’t throw as much as BG QB Nate Bowen, but BG may also keep running with Hudson Schmitt & Co. if it’s working to kill clock. BG’s defense will be the key.
THE PICK: BG 35, Winnacunnet 30. This one goes down to the wire.
DIVISION II
PELHAM (6-2) at MILFORD (2-6)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Milford HS.
LAST WEEK: ConVal 21, Milford 19; Souhegan 33, Milford 6.
LAST YEAR: Pelham 48, Milford 6.
FYI: The Pythons are stinging from a one-sided loss to Souhegan but need a win for playoff seeding, etc. Milford has been competitive but has struggled to put a complete game together against some of the better teams. They’ll be looking for some positives to take to head into next season.
THE PICK: Pelham 33, Milford 14.
SATURDAY
DIVISION III
MONADNOCK (7-0 Division III, 8-0 overall) at CAMPBELL (6-1)
WHEN: 11 a.m.
WHERE: CHS in Litchfield.
LAST WEEK: Monadnock 8, York (Me.) 6; Campbell did not play.
LAST YEAR: Campbell 50, Monadnock 26.
FYI: Game of the Year in Division III, likely preview of the finals. The Cougars, though, will likely be without back Braydon White, ejected during the win two weeks ago over Lebanon. But Brody Pinciaro will do more than pick up the slack. Monadnock has ripped through Division III, led by back Nick Ball. This should be ultra competitive.
THE PICK: Monadnock 28, Campbell 21. A playoff preview in Cougar Country. Look for a different result in three weeks.
