PELHAM – After coming in relief to lead the Souhegan High School football team to last week’s 19-9 win over Plymouth, Michael Fiengo had a full week to prepare as he returned to his starting quarterback duties ahead of Friday night’s game against Pelham.
With no setbacks following shoulder injury that cost him three games, the senior enjoyed the full reunion with an offense full of playmakers.
Fiengo completed all nine of his passes for 152 yards with a touchdown and added two rushing scores during a 33-6 victory that kept defending Division II champion Souhegan undefeated at 8-0.
“This week I knew I was playing, I got cleared, I practiced every day and went to work every day with my teammates,” Fiengo said. “The whole team showed up today and everyone played great. I couldn’t be happier with my teammates.”
One of those teammates was senior running back Ryland Raudelunas, who scorched Pelham to the tune of 215 rushing yards on 15 carries with two scores. He took the opening play of the game 33 yards to move Souhegan to Pelham’s 32-yard line. He now has unofficially 1,262 rushing yards with 20 total touchdowns on the season.
“The O-line did a great job and the receivers on the edge did a great job of perimeter blocking and it made my job a whole lot easier with those guys out there blocking for me,” Raudelunas said.
After a pair of penalties forced Souhegan into a third-and-28, Fiengo found Chase Knuckles for a 14-yard completion. On fourth-and-14, Fuengo hit Brody Smith (five catches, 100 yards) across the middle and he finished off the rest for a 22-yard scoring connection that gave Souhegan a 7-0 lead with 7:03 left in the first quarter.
“It’s a game-changer when he’s in, he’s an absolute dude and we’re glad we have him,” Souhegan coach Robin Bowkett said. “He just runs our offense so well and the guys rally around him. He’s a baller. He was just dialed in.”
Pelham (6-2) responded with a drive that stalled out on fourth down when Souhegan stuffed Brady Williams at the 5.
With his team backed up, Fiengo connected on an 18-yard completion to Smith and they connected again for a 49-yard bomb to get down to Pelham’s 26. Raudelunas finished off the 15-play, 95-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown run to give Souhegan a 14-0 lead with 7:07 left in the second.
Raudelunas later exploded for a 61-yard touchdown scamper down the sideline off an option to give Souhegan a 28-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.
“He’s a beast, he’s been our best player of the year and I think maybe he’ll be up for D2 Player of the year,” Bowkett said. “He’s put in so much work. We make it harder than it needs to be as coaches. You’ve just got to get the ball to the guy who can get into the end zone and he’s one of them.”
Pelham’s only touchdown came on the opening drive of the second half when quarterback Kevin Hardy found Williams for a 23-yard touchdown pass.
Souhegan squashed any momentum with a 12-play, 89-yard drive that chewed up over six minutes. Fiengo finished off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run and he added a 9-yard scoring run to close out the game’s scoring in the fourth.
“They typically make a lot of big plays and sustained drives is something they can do,” Pelham coach Jason Reilly said. “They haven’t had to do a lot of that, but they showed they could do that today. That took that wind out of our sails.”
The Sabers likely will be the No.1 seed after it hosts Hollis-Brookline in next Friday’s regular-season finale.
