HOLLIS – At times Friday night, it might have felt like looking into the future whenever Patrick Gendron looked across the football field.
The first-year Hollis Brookline High School coach could see glimpses of what his Cavaliers might be down the road when taking a peek at Manchester West.
But for the Blue Knights, the future is now.
Jarome Henert scored two touchdowns, and recovered a fumble, and the West defense recorded its second shutout to open the season, as the Blue Knights rolled past HB 37-0 in a Division II West Conference game.
Myles Whiter, Rayvon Nelson and Liam King also had a touchdown apiece for West (2-0) while Manny Mendoza competed 13 of 20 passes for 147 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
“We did some things really well,” West coach Andrew Provencher said. “We had some bursts of good effort and some drives that we stacked together that were good. That’s a good Hollis Brookline team. They’re young and they’re scrappy and they’re pretty tough. They did some things to give us some issues, without a doubt.”
West caused itself some issues as well, with six penalties for 50 yards in the first half – including back-to-back holding calls, one of which negated a touchdown run by Henert – and two turnovers.
But the defense was able to pick up the slack, holding HB (0-2) to just 3 yards rushing while creating three takeaways, including one on the Cavs’ first play.
Nelson recovered a fumble by Jacob Velez at the HB 21-yard line to open the game, and on the next play, Mendoza hit Whiter for a touchdown.
The Cavs bounced back with a 14-play drive that got them down to the West 15-yard line, but on fourth down, Cole Duncan was stopped for a 3-yard loss. West responded with a 14-play drive of its own, capped by Henert’s 5-yard scoring run.
“We’ve got to finish and we’ve got be confident enough to finish,” Gendron said. “We’ve got some talented players, tough kids, coachable kids. We just have to have that bite down mentally and be able finish drives.”
Stevie Nieble completed 10 of 17 passes for 98 yards and an interception for HB and Duncan had six catches for 65 yards while Velez had three catches for 22 yards. But no one else had more than seven total yards, and after getting shutout in the opener against Kingswood, the Cavs are still looking for their first points of the season.
“I’m not happy with the scoreboard the past two weeks, but the players mentality and positive mindset is outstanding,” Gendron said. “They’re playing their hearts out. It seems like there is a buzz that’s been created around here. That’s what I wanted when I came in, for people to be excited about Hollis Brookline football. I think we’ve started that.”
