HS TOURNEYS: BG boys lax, Souhegan baseball get wins

Don’t be fooled, just because it rained most of Saturday doesn’t mean the NHIAA tournaments were completely washed out.

We got boys lacrosse wins by Bishop Guertin and Campbell, plus, yes, Souhegan was able to get a quarterfinal baseball game in at Southern New Hampshire University while a Hollis Brookline boys volleyball quarterfinal was a given (indoors).

Most of the results are good news. Here’s your tourney rundown:

BOYS LACROSSE

DIVISION I QUARTERFINALS

NO. 2 BISHOP GUERTIN 19, NO. 7 CONCORD 2

The Cards jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, leading 11-1 at the half and soon it was running time in the second half.

Owen King led the way with five goals and four assists,while Mike Ponto had two goals and five assists. Beau Dubois had three goals and Cam Hayden (two goals, assist), Hudson Schmitt (two goals), Drew Redfern (two goals) also helped out. Jack Redfern, Brady Donohue and Jeremy Warren each had a goal while Liam Connerty added an assist.

The Cards (14-5) will now face No. 3 Bedford in the semifinals on Wednesday at Exeter’s Bill Ball Stadium at 5 p.m.

The win was BG coach Brian Cameron’s first career postseason victory.

DIVISION II QUARTERFINALS

NO. 5 ST. THOMAS 9, NO. 4 HOLLIS BROOKLINE 8

The Cavs fell short as the Saints (13-5) scored in the final few minutes to snap an 8-8 tie. HB (13-6), which led 8-6 going into the final quarter, called time out with the ball with 22 seconds left but fell short.

J.P. Torgersen scored three goals while Bennett Torgersen added two. Noah Taylor (goal, two assists), Mike O’Hearn (goal, three assists) and Colin Magnuszewski (goal) also contributed to the Cavalier cause.

Defensively, Patrck Masoni, Tyler Allen, Colten Herrera and Aidan O’Hearn played well in front of goalie Levi Mitchell (13 saves). St. Thomas moves on to face No. 1 Derryfield in the semis on Thursday in Bedford.

DIVISION III QUARTERFINALS

NO. 6 CAMPBELL 8, NO. 3 BOW 7

The Cougars are in the semifinals for the third straight year, improving to 11-5 while Bow’s season ends at 11-4.

Campbell now will take on No. 2 Plymouth (13-2) in the semifinals on Thursday at Laconia’s Bank of NH Stadium at 5 p.m. Campbell beat Plymouth 6-5 on the road back on May 14.

BASEBALL

DIVISION II QUARTERFINALS

NO. 1 SOUHEGAN 7, NO. 9 PEMBROKE 0

Brayden Hickman tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out 10 and walking just one as the Sabers (17-2) advanced to the semifinals.

Matt Silk went 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Alex Trudel went 2 for 3 including a double with two runs scored and an RBI. Brody Smith had two sac flies to knock in two runs. Joe Mayo (sac fly, RBI), Drew Reagan (hit, run), and Cam Brown (triple) were among other many contributors.

The Sabers will play the winner of today’s Hollis Brookline-Kingswood quarterfinal on Wednesday at Concord’s Warren Doane Field in the Memorial Field complex at 7 p.m. The Sabers pushed back Saturday’s game three hours (from 4 to 7 p.m.) to move away from the rain.

BOY VOLLEYBALL

DIVISION I QUARTERFINALS

NO. 3 HOLLIS BROOKLKNE 3, NO. 6 LONDONDERRY 2

The Cavaliers certainly had to work to keep their season alive, scratching out a tough win against the Lancers, whom they beat 3-1 during the regular season.They won the decisive fifth set 15-12 after going 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25 in the first four.

Ethan Norris led the way with a spectacular 32 kills, while Matteo Morel had seen kills, four aces, and 12 service points. Freshman Zac Wu had 44 assists and 10 service points.

HB (15-2) will now take on No. 2 Dover (16-1) in the semifinals Tuesday at Nashua North at 5 p.m. Dover swept HB 3-0 back on May 28.

TODAY’S GAMES

In baseball, No. 9 Bishop Guertin will be at No. 1, unbeaten Pinkerton in the Division I quarters at 12 p.m. At 3 p.m., No. 5 Kingswood visits No. 4 Hollis Brookline in the Division II quarters and No. 6 Campbell is at No. 3 Bishop Brady at 1 p.m. at Rollins Park in Concord.

In softball, No. 7 Bishop Guertin is at No. 2 Windham at 5 p.m. in the Division I quarterfinals, while in the Division II quarters No. 11 Campbell is at No. 3 Oyster River at 6 p.m.

Souhegan girls lacrosse, No. 3, will take on No. 2 Pinkerton in the Division I semis at 5 p.m. at Exeter’s Bill Ball Stadium. And in boys and girls track, the annual Meet of Champions will be at Oyster River in Durham.
