Softball was the game of the day Wednesday and for local high school tourney teams, it was a clean split. Thumbs up for Bishop Guertin in Division I and Campbell in Division II, but not the same unfortunately for Merrimack in Division I and Milford in Division II.
Here’s all the info:
DIVISION I PRELIMS
NO. 7 BISHOP GUERTIN 4, NO. 10 TIMBERLANE 1
The catalysts for Guertin were pretty easy to spot at Elliott Field: Bella Nutting had a three-run homer, and Cards pitcher Jenny Davey tossed a gem, a complete game two-hitter allowing one unearned run with four strikeouts and zero walks.
BG (13-5) now heads to face No. 2 Windham (15-3) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
“We played well,” Guertin coach Dakota Bilodeau said. “We played pretty lockdown defense and Jenny had a great game.
“Our offense came alive and I’m really proud of the bottom half of the lineup for stepping up and doing their job.”
Avery Zapenas, hitting eighth in the lineup, went 3 for 3. Nutting went 2 for 3
NO. 11 SPAULDING 5, NO. 6 MERRIMACK 2
The Tomahawk bats went cold in Merrimack. The ‘Hawks fell behind 5-0 after three innings and the ‘Hawks had a tough time responding as the Red Raiders’ Maddie Hartman tossed a complete game.
Julia Hoag led the ‘Hawks with two hits and great defense while Cam Bellen, Lily Dionne and Marissa Nelson also collected hits for the ‘Hawks, who finish 13-6. Spaulding (11-8) will move on to face No. 3 Pinkerton in Saturday’s quarters.
“Tough loss,” Merrimack coach Steve Yabroudy said, “but a great season for the Tomahawks.”
DIVISION II PRELIMS
NO. 5 MERRIMACK VALLEY 7, NO. 12 MILFORD 6
The Spartans nearly pulled off the upset, and finish the season 7-10. Molly Miles had two hits and four RBIs to lead their offense, while Arianna Wales had two hits.
Alivia Mazzeo pitched a complete game, allowing seven runs but on just six hits while striking out three.
Now 12-5, Merrimack Valley will now face No. 4 ConVal on Saturday in the quarters in Peterborough.
NO. 11 CAMPBELL 6, NO. 6 SANBORN 5
Well we did get one upset as the Cougars came out on top to move to 9-8 on the season. Their reward? A trip to Durham Saturday to face No. 3 Oyster River (16-3) which beat Pelham 14-0 in their prelim. The Cougars know how the Pythons feel; they lost to the Bobcats 14-2 just over a week ago.
TODAY’S SCHEDULE
It’s a day for baseball and lacrosse, but also tennis. No. 1 Souhegan (16-0) will take on No. 2 Portsmouth (15-1) in what should be an epic clash for the Division II championship at 3 p.m. at Alvirne High School. The Sabers edged the Clippers 5-4 during the regular season.
In Division I baseball, No. 9 Bishop Guertin (11-8) will be at No. 8 Portsmouth at 5 p.m. in the prelims.
Also, in Division II No. 4 Hollis Brookline (13-4) will host No. 13 Pelham (7-9). And in Division III, No. 6 Campbell (11-5) will host No. 11 Gilford (8-8), all at 4 p.m.
Then there’s the girls lacrosse quarterfinals. In Division I, No. 5 Nashua South (14-4) will be at No. 4 Exeter (14-4) at 5 p.m. while in an all local matchup, No. 6 Bishop Guertin (10-6) is at No. 3 Souhegan (12-3) at 7 p.m. at Calvetti Field.
In Division II, there’s another all-local matchup at 5 p.m. with No. 2 Merrimack (13-1) hosting No. 7 Hollis Brookline (9-8) at Student Memorial Field.
