It’s time for the local high school track athletes to shine, beginning later today at Portsmouth High School.
That will be the Division I Championships, while Sunday more locals will compete in the Division II and III championships at Sanborn High School. They have been moved from the original Saturday date due to the damp forecast.
Locally, who will shine? The Nashua North girls, led by hurdler and relay anchor Jhanelle Thomas could make a lot of noise in the Division I girls meet. North’s boys could be strong as well, and don’t count out South with its relay strength.
And in Division II tomorrow, remember Milford got the indoor title and should be strong in this meet as well. One could label the Spartans as the favorites.
Here’s a look:
DIVISION I BOYS
North’s Luke Peters is tied for second seed in the 100 and is a contender in the long jump.
A great duel to watch will be local rivals Darius Smith of North and Alvirne’s Shawn Boudreau, ranked one-two in the shot put and reverse that seeding for the discus. Smith will contend in the javelin (third seed), while so will Nashua South’s Sawyer Penny (second seed).
Nashua South is second seed in the 4×100 relay behind Pinkerton, and both North and South are top five contenders in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays. In the field, South’s Jackson Daw is ranked third in the pole vault. Panther Preston Bois could score points in the triple jump.
For Bishop Guertin, while Matt Giardina is the favorite by far in the 3200, watch out for No.2 seed Carson Fischer in the 1600
Merrimack’s Luca Kabel had the best 100 time during the regular season.
Alvirne’s Shane Plumley is the top seed in the 400, and teammate Joe Marcotte is a contender in the 300 hurdles. Bronco Jeremia Caraballo-Sophos is ranked third in the high jump.
DIVISION I GIRLS
All eyes will be on Thomas the top seed in the 100 and 300 hurdles. The Titans 4×100 relay will be in the mix, but the biggie will be the 4×400 relay that Thomas anchors, as the Titans are the top seed there. Also for North, Allie Dandeneau and Sarah Frye are in the top five in the long jump.
North’s Rosalie Neveu could score some points in the 800 meters. Titan Laura White is the second seed in the 1600 as well as the 3200. North could also get points in the triple jump as Sarah Frye is seeded third.
Nashua South’s Sarah Witta will score in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and South’s Nora Gautieri is ranked fifth in the shot put, Chloe Cruz is seeded second in the discus and Emma Millette is fourth in the pole vault.
For Bishop Guertin, Anna Fondakowski will look for a top five finish in the 3200.
DIVISION II BOYS
If Milford has success – the Spartans could be the favorite – Avery Wilson will be a big part. He’s the second seed in the 100, and tied with Hollis Brookline’s Sam Bruneau for the top time in the 200.
Spartans Will Whitley and Logan Korthals are contenders in the 800
The Spartans and Cavs are ranked 1-2 in the 4×100 relay and the Spartans are number one in the 4×400. HB and Souhegan could be in the top five. And Milford is the No. 1 seed in the 4×800.
There’s more points for the Spartans. Ethan Morin is seeded second in the high jump.
HB’s Brady McCammack should score points in the 110 hurdles as well as the 300 hurdles.
Souhegan’s Brody Smith is a contender in the 400 as is Dallen Noorda in the 800. Owen Pisinski is seeded second in the pole vault.
DIVISION II GIRLS
Likely no title contenders, but some good performances still expected.
Milford’s Rylee Coates will score points in the 400 and the Spartans are seeded second in the 4×800. Amelia Hebert is seeded third in the high jump. Zoe Rick is ranked third in the shot put.
Souhegan’s Samantha Swanbon could make noise in the 800, and is ranked sixth in the 1600.
Hollis Brookline will be led by Grace Dow, points for sure for her in the 100 hurdles and she’s the top seed in the 300 hurdles.
DIVISION III BOYS, GIRLS
Campbell won’t contend for titles in either, but there are few chances for points. In the girls, the Cougars 4×800 are seeded fifth.
