NASHUA – There’s no doubt that Bishop Guertin High School lacrosse has had better days than Thursday at Stellos Stadium.
The Cards went 0-for-2 in a boys-girls doubleheader, the boys falling 14-8 at the hands of Massachusetts power Boston College High, and then the girls were completely dominated 11-0 by Moses Brown of Providence, R.I. in a game called with 4:30 left in the first half.
While the girls could not crack the Moses Brown net and had limited possessions, the Cardinal boys went scoreless for a stretch of 19:03 from late second quarter through three minutes into the fourth quarter.
You don’t see that too often. BG boys coach Brian Cameron took the bulk of the blame for what was a tough loss that puts the Cards at 6-3 going into today’s game vs. Nashua North at Stellos.
“Our performance starts with me and my coaching,” the first-year BG mentor said. “Need to do a better job getting our guys prepared.”
The third quarter was the difference, although the Eagles spotted BG an early 3-1 lead before rattling off four straight and five of the next six scores in the second period to lead 6-4 at the half.
Then, it was a B.C. Blitz of six straight goals, five in the third, to lead 12-4 and put things out of reach.
“We just had to settle into our sets,” B.C. High coach Marcus Craigwell said. “Once we started executing our sets at full speed, I knew the goals were going to start flying. Just had to trust our process, basically.”
The thing is, the Cards, both boys and girls, want to play the out-of-state games against tougher competition to improve. Unfortunately, the BG boys are 0-3 in those games, while the girls are 1-2, 7-3 overall.
“They played a great game, they’re a tough team, and that’s why we play this hard schedule,” Cameron said. “One of the positives was our second midfield line shined. Our best players today certainly weren’t our best players, but we know they’re going to play better.”
Guertin was led by Drew Redfern – one of those second line middies – with two goals. Everyone else was a single: Sean McGarry, Jeremy Warren (and an assist) Cam Hayden, Michael Ponto (with two assists), Hudson Schmitt and Tyler McLeod. Owen King added two assists while Jonah Feliciano had 11 saves.
But the Cards just couldn’t get enough possessions to increase all those totals.
“We struggled clearing the ball,” Cameron said. “I thought they had the ball for large periods of time. Off-ball defense will be a focus; I thought (the Eagles) did a really good job cutting and backside actions that got open. We really didn’t have the ball as much as we normally do.”
A key juncture took place with BG up man and coming out of a time out with just over a minute to go in the first half, down 5-4. Not only did the Cards not score, they turned the ball over and B.C. High’s Joseph Leach scored with 33 seconds left for a 6-4 halftime lead.
“To beat a team like this we can’t turn the ball over at the rate we did,” Cameron said. “It was a two-goal swing. I thought we had a good look. … But it goes the other way. What could’ve been a 5-5 game goes 6-4. We’re learning to play and battle.”
B.C. High was led by Murphy Belvin’s four goals and three by Nick Emsing. Luke Allen and Leach had two each.
While Craigwell talked about his players trusting their process, Cameron said his players do the same concerning the process of playing tough competition as they’ll reap the benefits down the road.
“These guys know we play a tough schedule,” Cameron said. “We’re a good team and we haven’t lost any belief in this room at all. We’ve just got to get better and learn from it. We don’t learn from it, it doesn’t help us.”

MOSES BROWN 11, BG 0
The Cardinal girls will no doubt be taking that same approach. The rain picked up in intensity right from the opening draw, and part of the problem was Moses Brown’s first five goals were with with BG a man down.
It was 7-0 after one and lightning was spotted with 4:30 left in the half. After about a half hour delay with several other lightning episodes and the storm turning into a monsoon, the contest was mercifully declared over.
Cards athletic director Ryan Brown said the game will go down as a Guertin loss.
MB’s Lilly Madeira had a hat trick to lead the visitors.
Guertin will now try to bounce back on Tuesday at 6 p.m. vs. 10-1 Pinkerton at Stellos.
