HUDSON – The sign of a good team is when one of your top players is down, someone else will help pick up the slack.

Hello, Abby Lynn.

The Bishop Guertin standout knew Tuesday that a lot would be on her shoulders with fellow scorer Lola Dumont out with a bad ankle, and she more than carried the load with six goals and an assist in the Cards’ 10-3 season opening win over Londonderry at Presentation of Mary Academy.

“It was a great win,” Lynn said. “It’s a big loss with (Dumont) out, but we have a lot of great low attackers that are feeding and working together on plays, they really helped me execute everything I was able to do in this game.”

“Abby’s great, she does such a great job,” Guertin coach Callie Santos said. “She’s such a great offensive leader for us right now, she’s exactly what we need.”

Especially yesterday, when the Cards trailed Londonderry 2-1 early in the second quarter. But Lynn tied it with 7:15 left in the half to start a string of four straight BG goals for a 5-2 halftime lead. She had another in that stretch, as did Bella Dawson and Sarah Brunelle (two on the day).

The Lancers tried to slow the pace in the third quarter, getting a goal by Annabelle Melia to cut the gap to 5-3. But that would be their last tally as the Cards got goals by Brunelle and Lynn to lead 7-3 heading into the final 12 minutes. The only thing that could slow them down would have been the threatening weather that was surrounding the PMA field but never broke through.

“Our cutters were being more aggressive, and our feeders were being more aggressive with their drives,” she said. “It’s a good opener.”

The slow start was basically due to a new group developing chemistry.

“I think it’s a bunch of kids working together to come together,” Santos said. “It’s a lot of kids who haven’t had that much time in previous seasons. So they’re definitely doing a great job of coming together as a group and putting in the best effort they possibly can every day. I really appreciate their work ethic.”

Lynn had two more goals in the fourth period, along with a goal by Madisyn Mendell, who had two assists. Mari Tomasello was huge with four assists, a couple setting up Lynn perfectly. Maddy Eder-Linell had five saves in goal.

For the Lancers, Eres Delorey and Cora Roger also scored. But they just weren’t able to contain Lynn.

“All I could ask of the girls was their energy and they kept that up,” Lancers coach Kelsey Derhak said. “(Lynn) got us on the back door cuts, she’s really creative and she’s really shifty off the cutting. I think that worked really well for them.”

Santos told her players at halftime they had talent to push through any doldrums and keep the Lancers at bay up 5-2.

“For sure,” she said. “I definitely say ‘You guys are a talented group’. My biggest thing with them is go out there and compete how you know how to compete. … If we’re going to work to be competitors, then we’ll find success.”
