The good are becoming very good.

That’s the way the start of the season has been for the Hollis Brookline boys and Souhegan girls high school tennis teams.

The Cavs avenged last year’s semifinal loss with a 5-4 thriller over Lebanon, moving to 3-0 on the season. The Sabers had much less drama, winning eight of nine against Pembroke to also move to 3-0.

Here’s the rundown of a smattering of matches that were played in the chill or indoors on Friday:

BOYS TENNIS

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 5, LEBANON 4

It came down to No. 3 doubles on the indoor courts at Longfellow Tennis Club in Nashua, with the HB duo of Eli Mazzola and Sam Pistor downing Lebanon’s Lode Schultz/Axel Ericson 8-4.

“It was a hard fought victory,” Cavs coach Celestino Eddie Sepulveda III said.

The teams split singles with HB wins coming from John Torpey at No. 2 (8-4), Greyson McSeveney at No. 3 (8-6) and Mazzola at No. 6 (8-2).

HB’s other doubles win came from the No. 2 tandem of Torpey/McSeveney, 8-3.

HB visits Plymouth next Wednesday.

BEDFORD 9, BISHOP GUERTIN 0

It’s never easy facing the Bulldogs and it was anything but that for the Cards, who managed to win just four games one each by Evan Deyak at No. 2 and Max Lizotte at No. 5 in singles and two other games in doubles.

Guertin (0-2) hosts Londonderry on Monday.

MERRIMACK 6, ALVIRNE 3

The Tomahawks are now 2-0 on the young season, winning a match between the two local teams who dropped down to Division II.

Merrimack clinched things with five of six singles wins. Victories went from No. 2 Leon Rossman (8-6) on down as he was followed by Jeremy Nigen (8-5), Nithin Sathappan (8-1), Lucas Goldberg (8-0) and Drew Bergen (8-4). Rossman/Sathappan won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Alvirne’s singles win was by No. 1 Sam Hergenhan 8-3, and doubles wins went to No.1 Hergenhan/Owen Suprenant 8-5 and No. 3 Samanyu Kudikala/Christian Figueredo 8-4.

Alvirne (1-2) hosts Kennett on Monday while Merrimack is at Winnacunnet.

GIRLS TENNIS

SOUHEGAN 8, PEMBROKE 1

The Sabers cruised, with singles wins by Callie Perrin (8-0), Tess Jancar (8-1), Ori Dart (8-0), Caroline Drum (8-1), Sophia Yates (8-0) and Emma Perrin (8-0).

Souhegan’s doubles wins were by Abby Cho/Lucy Wysor at No. 1 8-4 and No. 3 Amanda Leary/Yates 8-0.

Souhegan hosts Goffstown on Monday.

TIMBERLANE 5, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 4

The Cavs took four of six singles matches but couldn’t get that last win as they were swept in doubles, falling to 1-1.

Singles winners for HB were Anna Heiplik (8-5), Ava Porto (8-5), Max Walsh (8-6), and Madeline Barich (8-5).

HB hosts Pembroke on Monday.
